GÜRCÜ DIŞ POLİTİKASI VE BÖLGEDEKİ YANSIMALARI

Reign of Queen Tamar during which the Georgian Kingdom reached its widest borders, witnessed very important military and political developments both inside and outside. Queen Tamar who firstly had to deal with opponents and revolts, changed her course to the foreign policy after resolving these problems in a short time and achieved numerous military successes. The first of these victories is the Battle of Shamkhor. Georgians defeated a big Muslim coalition in the Battle of Shamkhor in 1195. But the greatest victory of this period is the Battle of Basian in 1202. This triumph was a great event not only for Georgia, but also for the all Christian world. Henceforth, Georgia became one of the strongest power in Southern Caucasus. Another significant event of Tamar’s reign is the foundation of the Empire of Trebizond on the Black Sea in 1204 with the aid of Georgian troops. Georgians then invaded Azerbaijan and seized many cities in this region. Thus, at the beginning of 13’th century, Georgia had a superior position along her southern frontiers and secured the safety of country’s southeast and southwest territories. The Georgian Kingdom reached zenith of its political and military power in that time. Because of this, today Tamar's reign is called as the Georgian Golden Age. In this study, firstly we will talk about these events that deeply affected to the historic process of the region. And then we will try to explain the process how the Georgian Kingdom became one of the most powerful states of the region and its reflections in this area.
