The subject of this post, CUL MS Gg.5.22, a manuscript from the collection of Thomas Erpenius, is a Javanese text containing three parts, (1) mainly dealing with Muslim law (fiqh) discussing the principal religious duties, followed by short sections on (2) divination, and (3) the principles of faith in the form of a catechism.
This paper concerns on the Javanese Islam manuscript entitled Déwi Malêka Code Br.16 saved at the National Library of Republic Indonesia in Jakarta and Cod.Or 7562 preserved at the Library of Leiden University the Netherlands. The objectives of this study are to describe the physical condition of the manuscripts and to examine the content of those two texts especially the Islamic and Javanese values. Data was collected using documentary research and analyzed using codicology, philology and Islamic studies. The finding of this research shows that these manuscripts tell about the story of Dèwi Maléka, a queen of Rum. From this story, it can be understood about the Islamic and Javanese values that are presented as questions and answers. In the last chapter of each text, there are some advises related to what should not be done by human being refereeing to the Javanese values.

Tradition in Java has come and influenced by various traditions which come outside Java. Manuscript is one product of culture which records the whole element exist in the society at that era. Sultan Ngarum manuscript is a manuscript which comes from Indramayu, a region which is part of the West Java. The manuscript records the encounter of Javanese and Islamic tradition reflected in the characters, character symbolization, and dialogue. The encounter of the two tradition results in hybridity shown in the name of the character and terms related to tradition. Moreover, in the story, the relation between Javanese and Islam was portrayed harmony although at the first attendance, Islam has not yet considered as part of Java. Through analysis of the symbols found in the text, it is shown that the religion has brought a good change for Javanese through the medium of knowledge as a way to protect oneself from inner and physical evil. The object of this research is manuscript. The content of the manuscript will be analyzed with thematic study through the element of the text such as narration, expression and dialogue. Then the symbols found in the findings will be analyzed using representation theory.

Artikel ini membahas manuskrip Islam Jawa berjudul Swaraning Ngasepi koleksi Perpustakaan Museum Dewantara Kirti Griya, Yogyakarta. Penelitian ini fokus pada deskripsi fisik naskah dan isi teksnya terutama terkait dengan gagasan pembentukan kultur islami yang terkandung di dalam teks. Data dikumpulkan dengan studi dokumentasi dan dianalisis dengan pendekatan filologi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teks itu menjelaskan tentang cara memperoleh petunjuk dari Tuhan untuk menjalani kehidupan yang harus ditempuh dengan laku islami. Dari penjelasannya, teks ini mengkritik laku bertapa dengan menyepi di tempat-tempat sunyi yang lazim dilakukan orang Jawa pada masa lalu untuk memperoleh petunjuk gaib.

Alongside the advance of Islamic reformism in the early twentieth century, one central element to pay attention is the rise of printed media, Islamic book, which enhanced the shaping of the reformist Muslims. Written in Malay with Rumi script, the books with Islamic substance first appeared as part of Islamic reform movement. Nearly all the authors were the leading activists of reformist organizations. This trend continued to develop, leading the books to emerge as an important pillar in the formation of Islamic intellectual discourses.
