Try to edit user, get Invalid user ID message

    When trying to edit the admin user, just after doing a fresh 2.2 installation, I get the message, “Invalid user ID.” I see that message is in wp-admin/user-edit.php but what causes that?

    In addition, I cannot save a post or a page, or save any Options.

    Kernel version 2.4.22-1.2197.nptlsmp
    Machine Type i686
    Apache version 1.3.34 (Unix)
    PHP version 5.0.5
    MySQL version 4.0.27-standard
    Host is http://www.afrihost.com

    Also tried, with no success:
    Installing 2.0.10, 2.1.3, and 2.2.1 RC1 with same results.
    Updating permalinks
    Setting php_value memory_limit 32M in .htaccess
    Setting siteurl and home values with no www. in urls
