• Hello,

I have installed WP and begun building the site in our new server. The WP install was installed in the home directory in a folder called ‘xyz.com’. We will be transferring DNS of our primary domain ‘abc.com’ to the new server to point at this new website before the end of this month. I would like to move the WP install to public_html directory from xyz.com directory to keep our database clean. I already tried doing a simple copy over from xyz.com to public_html and I couldn’t log into wp-admin, so I had to transfer the files back to the original xyz.com folder. How can I migrate everything into public_html without losing all functionality and having a smooth transition? All help is much appreciated!

  • You can use this plugin.

    Hope that helps 🙂

    Hey @simplyadmin01,

Most likely you’ll need to do a scrub of the database to replace the directory you currently have it in (source) with the directory you want it in (destination). My personal favorite for this task is the Search/Replace tool by interconnect/it – https://interconnectit.com/products/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/

Thank you both for the quick replies. I think there is something wrong with where our domain is being directed. Bear with me here:

Our new database on the new server was registered under our primary domain (abc.com) but currently abc.com is pointing to our old site on the old server. We decided to point our extra domain (xyz.com) at the new server in order to start building the new WP site in preparation for propagation before the end of the month.

So I followed the instructions using Keith’s method, but cannot get passed the stage where I am supposed to open the install.php file. I get a 404 error. I created a new subdirectory in the public_html folder and dropped the backup .zip file and install.php in there and when I attempt to access install.php through the browser, I get the error.

I am new to all this so I am in a bit of a bind. I have to get the new site up and running before the old site’s servers are EOLed. Any advice?
