• Hey guys,

I need help. I’m ready to publish my WordPress website (it has 8-9 articles), but my WP is installed in a subdirectory called “wordpress”. Therefore, my website’s URL is example.net/wordpress/.

Now, I’ve been on various how-to websites, as well as at the Codex website, but I don’t know what exactly to do.

Is it better to just point my new URL to the subdirectory or physically move the installation from the subdirectory to the root?
Do I need to change something in my database?
Will my article URLs be preserved?

Please help! I don’t know what to do or where to begin!

  • If you rename the WordPress directory on your server, switch ports or change the hostname http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress applies.

If you remove the subdirectory then your URLs will also be without the subdirectory, so you might want to investigate using something like Apache’s mod_rewrite to redirect the old URLs to the new ones if you are concerned with search engine ranking of, or stale links pointing to, your old posts.
