Responsiveness for tables is a very tricky issue, due to how tables work in the browser. It’s also highly dependent on the theme.
So, it’s not that TablePress tables are not responsive, but all HTML tables are not responsive (by default).

As one solution to make tables responsive, TablePress has a “Horizontal Scrolling” feature built-in, which you can enable on the “Edit” screen. It will then be possible for the site visitor to scroll the table left and right to see all content.

Even more approaches, like Collapse, Stack, and Flip are available in the Responsive Tables feature module, which is part of the TablePress premium versions.

Does that maybe help? If not, please let me know, and please also send a link to the page with your table, so that I can take a direct look and maybe make other suggestions.

that is indeed correct. The frontend table features require a table without merged cells, as those are not compatible with the JavaScript code, for technical reasons. You would therefore indeed not be able to use the Horizontal Scrolling feature with that table.

The mentioned Responsive Tables feature module does however contain a different implementation of horizontal scrolling, which also works with tables that do have merged cells.
