Please explain why my non-commercial license application for eligrey.com was denied under the reason “Business Contact Details”

My about page says that I professionally develop software, and separately I list an email address to contact me. That is not commercial solicitation.

There are no “business contact details” on my site. Every single post on my site is free without ads, none of my posts promote commercial products, and there are no donation or affiliate links on my site.

    Hi @sephr,

Thanks for writing. I have manually reviewed your site https://eligrey.com and confirmed that it’s for non-commercial use only, and therefore qualifies for our Free Stats plan. I have adjusted this in our records.

Please complete the re-verification process again, following the flow on this page to certify that your site is non-commercial:

@lerrtle Could you let me know what triggered the false detection? I’d like to understand this better as it seems like this is a common issue.

    Hello @sephr,

The reason your site has been classified as commercial could be any one of the reasons specified here: https://jetpack.com/support/jetpack-stats/free-or-paid/#how-is-a-commercial-site-defined.

One of the main commercial markers is having business contact forms, business email addresses or a combination these and other markers like ads, affiliate links, ecommerce activity, soliciting donations or sponsorships, or any other activity directly related to any business or organization.

The specific reason behind any commercial classifications, if any, would also be shown on the upgrade page here: https://wordpress.com/stats/purchase/https://eligrey.com.

    Thank you.

How do you detect “business email address”? If someone has an email address on their site using their own domain, you shouldn’t assume it’s business related unless the domain has some other nexus of commerce.

I feel like I got a false detection just because I have an email address using my domain name, and I don’t believe that the heuristic I’ve described is fair to implement. Please address this with code-level changes.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for sharing your feedback!

We’re constantly working on our internal classification and detection mechanisms and inputs like these help us push in that direction even further. While specific heuristic criteria cannot be altered individually, what we can do is offer a manual review for people who believe their site has been incorrectly categorized as commercial.

Hope this helps! If you’re still experiencing issues or have further concerns, please feel free to let us know.

    Thank you!
