Just a note for others needing to install WordPress on a http://www.awardspace.com hosted system.

In using FTP, make sure you use passive mode when uploading files. In FileZilla this is under the Site Manager Advanced settings for a given site. Check the “use passive mode” radio button. I’m using version 2.2.18 of FileZilla.

This is NOT an endorsement of awardspace, just information to help others!

  • Hey Michael,
I went through that earlier in the week – I should have warned you guys. Sorry.

Typically the database host DB_HOST at awardspace.com is:
    db5.awardspace.com

Mr. samboll mentioned this in thread:

    db1.awardspace.com is another DB_HOST at awardspace.com.

Also, you only get one database (at least for free accounts) at this host, so, if you need to install two or more copies of WordPress, remember to use different $table_prefix values in wp-config.php.

Awardspace.com gives you your own sub-domain such as yourlogin.awardspace.com. Also, the ftp address is typically yourlogin.awardspace.com.

Just a note that I’ve experienced “Error 500: Script Execution Failure” twice recently at awardspace.com

Reuploaded using both ascii and automatic upload in FileZilla, confirmed permissions (755), and that didn’t help.

This seems to be a recurring problem at awardspace.com (at least on the free sites). A search of their forums returns multiple threads about the problem.

It’s possible certain servers are not configured correctly so if you experience the problem don’t kill yourself. Consider a different host–you get what you pay for!
