We increased the cache refresh period to 2 hours (it was 1 hour before). Within a few minutes the Facebook shares started to appear again.
Maybe the 1 hour cache refresh was overloading the Facebook API?

Maybe your other plugins making conflicts, could you please check by deactivating other plugins.

We have now discovered that upgrading the Facebook API from version 2.8 to 2.9 was the cause of the shares disappearing.
After switching the API back to 2.8 the shares reappeared after a couple of hours.
Is it possible that the plugin has not been upgraded to work with Facebook API versions 2.9 and higher?
