The authors explore the rhetorical and pragmalinguistic features as well as the linguistic realizations and strategies used by Russian business communicants in writing business letters in English and contrast them to the samples of business letters of native English speakers. The paper proposes recommendations for preparing managerial personnel for international business interaction in the workplace through integrating authentic models and contexts into training strategies.

The author has demonstrated the explanatory and manipulative effect of metaphorical framing in political and mass media communication. The study postulates that in framing of political events, the figurative language has both linguistic and conceptual content, and the metaphorical frame is a powerful tool for the formation of beliefs and ideologies. The author points out to the need to expand the metaphorical repertoire applied to construct the image of Russia, and possible ways to activate alternative interpretations of current socio-political events. Possible directions of metaphorical reframing of the country's image are outlined by fixing complex figurative frames in the minds of target audience and their impact on it. These may consist in rejecting the excessively militarized discourse around the country and focusing on its cultural heritage, academic achievements, willingness of and openness to enhanced international interaction. The paper concludes that the discursive construction of the affirmative Russian image within and outside the country can be achieved through employing a positively charged metaphorical national narrative, reframed to draw particular attention to the merits and gains of Russia.

By applying cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics methods, it presents an attempt to showcase how the metaphor co-creation strategy may be helpful in reframing the discourse around cybersecurity dominated by inapt metaphors. The latter, in their turn, prompt wrong inferences, which ultimately results in false decisions about the nature of cyber vulnerabilities. The comparison of the conversational valence introduced by professional audience and laymen involved in the campaign of co-creating new metaphor-based utterances reveals how it channels the cybersecurity discourse, and is followed by outlining the implications of applying the newly created metaphors.

The main purpose of the study is to identify the dominant metaphorical models for conceptualizing smart technologies, reveal the explanatory potential of metaphor and outline the consequences of specific metaphors application for further development of smart technologies.

Being one of the most dramatic global challenges of the third Millennium, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred transformation in social order, economic/business relationships and dramatic growth in social anxiety and tensions, mistrust and discriminatory measures. It has inevitably found its reflection in language and related discursive practices, which rely heavily on discourse metaphors. When being systematically employed, they affect people's views of events, situations and decisions they subsequently make. The present paper focuses primarily on the COVID-induced discourse changes that create new metaphorical framings and reshape the familiar ones. The repertoire of elicited discourse metaphors framing the coronavirus discourse communicates the changing combating strategies referred to by the authors as globalist, nationalist and discriminatory. By drawing on specially compiled subcorpus of public and media texts, the paper reveals the conceptual and inferential structure of the concept of the COVID-19 pandemic and discusses the possible implications of activating various pandemic-related frames. The study stresses that the discursive construction of the coronavirus pandemic mirrors the dynamic nature of the pandemic itself as well as the measures to combat the insidious virus taken by national governments, the spread of misinformation and fake news as well as the split in the society and discrimination of certain groups (vaccine deniers/anti-vaxxers). Acknowledging the prevalence of military metaphors in the pandemic-related discourse, the authors claim that metaphorical framing serves as a crucial conceptual tool to communicate the gradual transition from war on COVID-19 to war of vaccines and ultimately to war on out-groups (vaccine deniers, anti-vaxxers).

It reveals sociocultural factors and psychological peculiarities affecting speech generating mental activity of male and female authors of British news texts as representatives of the native English-speaking community. The paper also touches upon the differences in male and female perception of events and their reflection in gender-neutral texts giving rise to feminine and masculine forms of writing. An attempt has been made to classify and describe linguistic parameters of newspaper texts written by male and female authors. The authors pay special attention to the gender analysis of structural, contents and stylistic aspects of news texts. The proposed matrix for identifying gender of a news text author has been validated by the results of the sociolinguistic experiment providing some insights into gender specificity of the mass media texts on various levels of language.

Dwelling on the divergent interpretations of a backdoor, it uncovers the potential of metaphor to serve both as an interpretative mechanism and as a framing tool in the ongoing digital technologies discourse. By combining methods of corpus research and frame semantics analysis the study examines the challenges of unpacking the meaning of the contested concept of the backdoor. The paper proposes a qualitatively new metaphor-facilitated mode of interpreting cybersecurity vulnerabilities based on MetaNet deep semantic metaphor analysis and outlines the merits of this hierarchically organized metaphor and frames ontology. The utility of the method is demonstrated through analyzing corpus data and top-down extracting of metaphors (linguistic metaphor-conceptual metaphor-entailed metaphor-inferences) with subsequent identifying of metaphor families dominating the cybersecurity discourse. The paper further claims that the predominant metaphors prompt certain decisions and solutions affecting information security policies.

The focus is set on the interdisciplinary methods applied in the metaphor studies which resulted in corpora, databases of figurative language and analysis of repositories of metaphors in English, French, and German. The question of reliable methods and procedures of identification of metaphors in modern linguistics is discussed in the article. The author praises efficiency of a metaphor methodology that was verified in the University of California (Berkley, USA), and considers possibility of its application for studies on Russian political metaphors through their comparison with English. The metaphors of government are used for exemplification of explanatory potential of an integrative approach that unites the opportunities of combining bottom-up and topdown procedures of identifying and analyzing metaphors within a single repository. The paper presents a procedure of deep multi-level semantic analysis of metaphors and dwells on techniques of formalizing the conception of neural cascades as applied to the analysis of metaphors. The author uncovers the problems in constructing the cross-linguistic (English and Russian) repository of political discourse metaphors. The proposed approach enables to determine interrelated conceptual networks and present metaphors at different levels of specificity and complexity of a multimodal model of metaphorical cognition.

The originally sacralized Russian patriotism has evolved into an ambiguous concept due to its discrediting in the post-Soviet era. The paper claims that patriotism is an essentially contested concept, frequently employed as a promotional tool in political campaigns, with figurative language serving as a tool for articulating patriotic sentiments. By applying corpus-based methods, the study elicits dominant metaphors employed in the discursive construction of Russian patriotism. It reveals variation, found in a set of preferred metaphors, which reflects diverging metaphorical narratives in the current patriotic discourse. The paper argues that metaphors are effective explanatory and framing tools applied in constructing the Russian national identity.

Taking into account the complicated nature of metaphor, its manipulative potential and a considerable amount of metaphorical terminological combinations functioning in political communication the authors consider it relevant and reasonable to include metaphor in the curriculum of the professional English language. The relevance of the paper is determined by the lack of studies proposing practical recommendations on the formation and development of metaphorical competence.

Treating cultural narratives employed in public discourse as an extended metaphorical frame, the paper argues that narratives make use of archetypical plots and the shared cognitive structures of human beliefs, motivations, goals, actions, events. Being systematically exposed to certain metaphorically framed narratives, people tend to change their views of events, situations and decisions affecting their lives. The authors claim that narratives serve as a powerful tool of political persuasion and present the generic model of a narrative structure.
