The portfolio and this accompanying book are a donation project to celebrate the completion and launch of the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa, unveiled in 2017. The title is taken from the Hebrew word "chai," which means "life" and has a numerical value of 18. Accordingly, there are 18 prints in the limited portfolio edition of 18. The book features a total of 53 photos. Doris L. Bergen, Tomasz Frydel, and Ryan Masters served as historical consultants for the project and book.

Bringing together a group of renowned genocide scholars, this panel will celebrate the forthcoming publication of the Cambridge World History of Genocide by discussing the most pressing questions in the field of genocide studies. We will reflect upon what this field has achieved in the past half century, how it is moving forward, and in what ways it should develop and change.
