Ukrainian historians will also find helpful the distinction Maura Cronin establishes between oral history and oral tradition in the study of the Irish famine as well as the methods of mapping population change using historical geographic information systems (GIS) outlined in the chapter by Mary Kelly, A. Stewart Fotheringham, and Martin Charlton. At the same time, the Ukrainian chapters have valuable offerings for Irish historians, such as Kasianov's critical reading of recent memory politics, Marples's discussion of Stalin's using ethnic lenses in his class policies, and Olha Papash's subtle reading o(Holod-33 (dir. Oleg Ianchuk, 1991), the only film representation of the Holodomor to date. Jan Jacek Bruski's article on Polish diplomatic reports as sources for the history of the Holodomor also introduces a foreign-policy angle that is not covered in the Irish chapters. Overall, the authors and editors deserve praise for putting together the first collection that promotes, if not actually pursues, a transnational study of the Irish and Ukrainian famines. Further comparative research on the two tragedies' commemorations would yield even more insight into the role of historical memory in the cultural construction of modern nations.

Gorbachev option that would have made such a solution difficult: the bitter hostility of the citi... more Gorbachev option that would have made such a solution difficult: the bitter hostility of the citizens of at least three key players in eastern Europe—Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic—to any solution that left them somehow in Russia's orbit (note, however, that Vaclav Havel favored a pan-European option). Sarotte entitles her fourth possibility, the one that succeeded, the prefab option, because the institutions used were already in existence and were simply extended eastward. One could quibble with the term prefab, which lends an aura of shabbiness and insubstantiality to western institutions, but basically she is right. Sarotte comes to four conclusions about the impact of 1989. Two of them, I think, suffer from an overemphasis on the role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). She argues that by adopting the prefab option, Kohl, President George H. W. Bush, and the others used institutions born of the old geopolitics, notably NATO, thus failing to take advantage of the opportunities that the new situation opened up. Sarotte probably emphasizes NATO because of her focus on German unification in which NATO's role in East Germany was a central issue. She is right when she argues that, by expanding NATO in the 1990s without making adequate provision for Russia, the western powers created a great deal of hostility that still complicates European politics. But she more or less ignores, except in discussing Francois Mitterrand's role, the most important element in the post1989 transition, the expansion of the European Union (EU). The EU is not an example of the old geopolitics, but quite the opposite. Her criticism of Francis Fukuyama's idea that a new "post-historical" mode of politics has become the norm in Europe is conventional, but it obscures the enormous originality of the EU. Whatever its faults, the EU has integrated a formerly war-torn continent into a peaceful economic powerhouse that insists on democratic negotiation, the defense of human rights, and a system of shared sovereignty. None of these things can be called the old geopolitics. In fact, the role of NATO itself as it expanded into eastern Europe was less a military one than a political one of expanding democratic practices, as Sarotte recognizes. Sarotte sees 1989 and its immediate resolution as one of the "truly major turning points in modern history" (214), and who is to argue, especially if one inserts the word "European" before "history." It was a stunning moment, Europe's best year, as Timothy Carton Ash puts it. Still, there are broader possibilities. In a world in which globalization and the information revolution have been the most important phenomena of the past fifty years, maybe 1989 can also be seen as removing a roadblock that the more or less closed Soviet system presented to participation in those worldwide processes. Or, if one believes, as I do, that the EU is the most important post-World War II development on the continent, perhaps 1989 is best understood as a milestone in an ongoing process of creation, a moment that opened eastern Europe for inclusion into this quite new European architecture.

ABSTRACT This Forum is a discussion among six contributors deeply familiar with the challenges of... more ABSTRACT This Forum is a discussion among six contributors deeply familiar with the challenges of analyzing survivor testimony, each with a distinct methodological approach to the topic of sexual violence and the Holocaust. Topics addressed in the discussion include the challenges posed by studying survivor testimonies to learn about sexual violence, the theme of silence and how scholars can mitigate the role they play in reinforcing it, how gender as a category of analysis intersects with other approaches, considerations related to age and memory, and the role of the audience in shaping how survivors communicate their experiences. The Forum discussion grew out of a scholarly conference held in Toronto in October 2018, titled Buried Words: A Workshop on Sexuality, Violence and Holocaust Testimonies. The workshop was organized by the Azrieli Foundation’s Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program and was inspired by its publication of several memoirs detailing experiences of sexual abuse and violence and other sexual encounters during the Holocaust, including Buried Words: The Diary of Molly Applebaum. This Forum features several of the participating scholars in conversation, addressing important questions that arose during the workshop.

Historians of sexuality in the Holocaust go where most fear to tread: Lisa Heineman called the in... more Historians of sexuality in the Holocaust go where most fear to tread: Lisa Heineman called the intersection ‘doubly unspeakable’. Why is it important to explore the history of sexuality in the Holocaust and what are the methodological, ethical and political issues at stake? In this Forum, five historians of gender, sexuality, Nazism and the Holocaust discuss what the field of Holocaust history gains from integrating sexuality and gender as analytical categories. By connecting Holocaust studies to the history of sexuality, the field gains, as we will argue, new theoretical insights, recognizing power hierarchies and societal shifts. As the scholarship moves to examining gender and sexuality in the Holocaust beyond a sole (if understandable) focus on sexual violence, topics like agency, love and prostitution, same sex desire and memory and subjectivity of both the perpetrators and victims come to the fore. What are we allowed to research? Why do we consider so many topics connected to mass violence and sexuality as taboo? How are we to make sense of them? The history of sexuality and gender not only introduces new topics to Holocaust studies; it also offers, more importantly, new perspectives on familiar themes.

In October 2014, Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky embarked on a photographic journey to cap... more In October 2014, Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky embarked on a photographic journey to capture landscapes of "scarred" sites of the Holocaust in East Central Europe. The journey resulted in 250 photographic images. Six of these were used as large-scale imagery for the National Holocaust Memorial in Ottawa, Canada.

The portfolio and this accompanying book are a donation project to celebrate the completion and launch of the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa, unveiled in 2017. The title is taken from the Hebrew word "chai," which means "life" and has a numerical value of 18. Accordingly, there are 18 prints in the limited portfolio edition of 18. The book features a total of 53 photos. Doris L. Bergen, Tomasz Frydel, and Ryan Masters served as historical consultants for the project and book.
