IMPORTANT:
You must have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status to enroll in these courses.
These four interactive courses will help you develop your listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. English is the language of instruction, which has been shown to favour language acquisition.
If you would like to pursue studies at Université de Saint-Boniface (USB), these courses will allow you to improve your proficiency so that you can meet the admission criteria for various programs, for instance, the Health Care Aide Certificate and the Diploma in Practical Nursing.
Learners 16 years and up may register for these courses.

EVERYDAY COMMUNICATION 1 (ALA 1)

You will explore topics related to your immediate personal needs. You will learn simple everyday vocabulary alongside simple grammar and syntax. Furthermore, you will identify certain language registers.
EVERYDAY COMMUNICATION 2 (ALA 2)
Something new in January 2025!
You will explore topics related to familiar situations of daily life. You will learn common everyday vocabulary, as well as some moderately complex grammar and syntax. Additionally, you will recognize certain language registers.
EVERYDAY COMMUNICATION 3 (ALA 3)
You will explore topics related to predictable and less predictable contexts. You will learn abstract, concrete, and some specialized vocabulary in addition to moderately complex grammar and syntax. Moreover, you will adapt communication to use different language registers.
EVERYDAY COMMUNICATION 4 (ALA 4)
You will explore topics related to less predictable contexts. You will learn abstract, concrete, and technical vocabulary along with some complex grammar and syntax. You will also adapt communication to use different language registers.
ALA 1 and ALA 2 end with an in-house skills exam. If you pass this exam, you will be able to register for the next course. ALA 3 and ALA 4 include the Academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic). This standardized exam will serve as proof of your proficiency and is recognized across Canada.

HOW DO I TAKE YOUR PLACEMENT TEST?
- Visit the Évaluations langagières webpage at https://pl.ustboniface.ca/.
- Create an account.
- Communicate with Continuing Education Division (CED) at dep@ustboniface.ca to confirm:
a. you are interested in the English as an Additional Language courses;
b. you have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status;
c. you have created an account for the placement test.
- Once we have granted you access to our test, read all important information about each module.
- Book an appointment for Module 1.
- Complete Modules 2 and 3.
To receive a course recommendation before registration closes, you must finish all modules during the evaluation period:
- from July 17 to August 27, 2024, for fall courses;
- from November 6 to December 19, 2024, for winter courses;
- from March 19 to April 29, 2025, for spring/summer courses.

Delivery method: hybrid (online and in person)
Duration:
- 16 weeks.
- Two 3-hour evening classes per week (one class online and one class in person) and two 6-hour classes per term (two Saturday classes in person).
- One 1-hour tutoring appointment per week.
In total, you will spend 108 hours in the classroom and 15 hours in tutoring. You can choose the dates and times of your tutoring appointments.

EQUIPMENT
To take part in the online evening classes, you must have:
- a computer or tablet capable of participating in video conferences, running multiple applications simultaneously, and sending and receiving emails;
- a compatible camera, microphone, and headphones;
- a stable and reliable Internet connection.
LEARNING PLATFORM
eCampus is a learning platform where your instructors will share:
- the link to your online classrooms;
- the link to the Tutoring Centre’s booking system;
- all course notes;
- all worksheets;
- all instructions, deadlines, and evaluation rubrics for your homework.
We will create an account for you using the first name, last name, and email address on your registration form. You will receive an email with your username and temporary password between 7 and 10 business days after enrolling in a course.
