Our goal here is not to constrain the source study to the limits of these two disciplines, but to take advantage of different kinds of expertise for its better understanding. Using an interdisciplinary edition of the manuscript Torino, Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria, T.III.2 (Codex Boverio), this essay suggests a number of methodological criteria that can provide rules for text-music relationships in the Ars subtilior repertory, and can help the critical evaluation of the two components.

Musical research has almost completely neglected the representation of women’s voices in Trecento... more Musical research has almost completely neglected the representation of women’s voices in Trecento song (or Italian Ars Nova). The absence of female authors, or female patrons, and the recording of their activities – very well studied for instance for 15th century Italy – seems to limit female presence in the Trecento song panorama as a real or even a poetic voice. However, women were not silent as performers, in lay or ecclesiastical milieux. Also, female-voice echo is retraceable through-out its different representations in coeval literary sources or directly in song texts. In this complex panorama, a gender-identified study of Trecento songs has not been done. The present essay will try to fill this gap. After a general introduction of female presence in Italian musical activities as singers and performers through historical and iconographic documents, the essay will give an overview of the representation of female performing voice in the Italian literary sources; after that, it will consider Italian polyphonic settings showing some rare representations of female voices in everyday life, outside romantic love or courtly context.
