Ancient space could be considered the physical and mental place where individuals lived, interact... more Ancient space could be considered the physical and mental place where individuals lived, interacted, and negotiated identity, beliefs, and cultural practices at different levels (house, grave, temple, city, landscapes, family group, community, etc.). Natural and cultural landscapes were actively shaped by humans facing periods of increased climate instability and famine, conflicts, wars, and phenomena such as the advent of Christianity or the relentless scourge of the Black Death. Understanding this often-far-reaching past requires tackling the challenge of integrating methods and perspectives from the Historical, Social, and Natural Sciences. By combining various sources and methods, archaeology enables us to understand how persistence and change shaped ancient space at different levels. However, the theoretical approach to contextualise %E2%80%98Persistence%E2%80%99 and %E2%80%98Change%E2%80%99 could be challenging. At the same time, the need for alternative and nuanced narratives of the past becomes evident when confronting previous scholars%E2%80%99 interpretations or approaching concepts such as resilience, adaptation, resistance, and fragility in archaeological reconstructions. An insightful reflection about vocabulary, methodology and approach to these concepts, sometimes provided by other research fields, can lead to multidisciplinary discussions, enhancing historical perspectives and actively contributing to research advancement. Thus, this session welcomes contributions that examine the ever-changing relationships between humans, animals, and their environments. We particularly encourage papers on theoretical approaches to persistence and change in archaeology from Antiquity to the Middle Ages without geographical limitations. Points of discussion could potentially, but not exclusively, include:- How do we best engage with and activate archaeological and environmental research data resulting from often localised cultural landscape investigations to transcend various disciplinary limitations and address the more extensive scale historical phenomena?

The focus of the workshop are research projects by young academics on the urban complex of Rome and Ostia. Especially in the last years, these important sites are being explored with new approaches. Much treated contexts as well as those only marginally discussed ware being investigated with modern methods and evaluated critically from new perspectives. This shows itself for one in new assessments and studies of known sites. Furthermore, basic research resting upon documentation in the form of microstudies of single buildings and material categories is gaining a lot of attention. Still young, digitally aided methods have an important role in these projects.

The introduction of the book presents the methodological background and lays the groundwork for understanding the research question, especially by defining Roman concrete. The monograph is enriched by plates in color at the beginning of the book and numerous figures (mostly plans) accompanying the text. It also includes tables listing the monuments studied, their building technique, the type of their rubble masonry, their vaulting technique, their traditional chronology, their stratigraphic dating, and other dating evidence. In addition to its bibliography, the monograph also offers a catalogue of the sites covered, a rich glossary and an index.
