Students' Entrance Requirement and Success in Engineering Programmes

Engineering programmes in Malaysia have been generally taking in first year students with strict ... more Engineering programmes in Malaysia have been generally taking in first year students with strict combination of subjects Maths, Chemistry and Physics at the matriculation or STPM level. The faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering at University Technology of Malaysia has taken for the first time students with combination of Maths, Chemistry and Biology ('biology students', N=162) together with those taking the normal combination of Maths, Chemistry and Physics ('physics students', N=104) for its five year engineering programmes. After two semesters of undergoing the programmes it was found that 12.96% of the biology students scored cumulative point average (CPA) ≥ 3.0, 79.01% with 2.99 ≥ CPA ≤ 2.0 and 8.02% with CPA < 2.0. Biology students have a mean of the CPA of 2.47 and a median of 2.39 whereas the physics students have a mean of 2.7 and a median of 2.73. Differences of performance for the two groups in engineering subjects such as Statics, Thermodynamics, and Mass and Energy Balances are also highlighted in this paper.

This paper presents a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model that was developed for the op... more This paper presents a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model that was developed for the optimal planning of electricity generation schemes for a nation to meet a specified CO 2 emission target. The model was developed and implemented in General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) for the fleet of electricity generation in Peninsular Malaysia. In order to reduce the CO 2 emissions by 50% from current CO 2 emission level, the optimizer selected a scheme which includes Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC), Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC), nuclear and biomass from landfill gas and palm oil residues. It was predicted that Malaysia has potential to generate up to nine percent of electricity from renewable energy (RE) based on the available sources of RE in Malaysia.
