Excessive moisture content can affect in a negative way building processes such as the installation of wooden floors or the use of wood as a structural material. Moisture meters can provide prompt and non-destructive determination of wood moisture, and as such are among the most useful tools available to wood products manufacturers and scientists. However, a continuous monitoring system is needed in order to avoid excessive moisture content which can damage wooden floors as well as structural wood. Data and procedures are presented in order to develop a suitable monitoring tool based on wireless sensor networks to provide an electronic tool of active security both for the installation of wooden floors and for the proper maintenance of existent buildings which have a timber structure.

EnglishCapacitive sensing and especially the one related to touch applications, even although it existed since 70s decade, has undergone a revolution in recent years with the growth of tactile gadgets. This sensing technology provides the means of interaction to improve user independence with some type of functional diversity been this tested at facilities like DecKubik. DecKubik (where new products developed by means of R&D are validated) is a singular infrastructure for research and development of new concepts, products and services for the market of active aging. It simulates an apartment with two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The spaces are equipped with the necessary infrastructure and they are ready to locate new products, interfaces, sensing systems, services and technologies that need to be tested and validated by users of assisted living environment (Ambient Assisted Living [AAL]). This article deals in a practical way with the features of capacitive sensing and functionalities that it can provide non-intrusively to users. At the same time, it deals with future advances in the capacitive touch technology.

If wood has been with us since time immemorial, being part of our environment, housing and tools,... more If wood has been with us since time immemorial, being part of our environment, housing and tools, now wood has gain momentum, as it is clear that wood improves our life style. Because of the healthiness, resistance, ecology and comfort, wood is important for all of us, no matter what our life style is. WOODTOUCH Project aims to open a completely new market for furniture and interior design companies, enabling touch interaction between the user and wooden furniture surfaces. Why not switch on or dim the lights touching a wooden table? Why not turn on the heating system? Why not use wood as a touch sensitive surface for domotic control? The furniture designed with this novel technology, offers a wooden outer image and has different touch sensitive areas over the ones the user is able to control all sorts of electric appliances touching over a wooden surface.

However, if we go for a walk and have a look at the old part of any city, we will realize that still most of the buildings have a wood structure. In spite of the fact that the majority of urban regulations forbid their demolition, other bad practices such as casting and overloading the wood structure are very common. Considering that we want to reach a standard of sustainable construction, the economical and environmental costs, which are implied by the deficient refurbishment makes it well worth a previous study of the structure, which in most cases represents less than a 1% of the total budget. The main goal of this paper is to present most relevant parts of the whole process of diagnosis of a wood structure building by means of Non-Destructive Testing Techniques. Among the ones to be considered, we could mention the analysis of the building and its surroundings, on-site inspection of the building, structural diagnosis, definition of the corrective actions to be taken, definition of treatments, quality control and a maintenance plan. For the on-site inspection of the building, in the paper we will highlight the use of Non-Destructive methods such as resistograph drilling, X-ray imaging, ultrasound-based testing or moisture measurement. We will provide practical examples of all this. The aim of this paper is to give the audience an overall idea on how a pre-assessment work can enhance the refurbishment of a wood structure building while reducing costs and environmental impact.

This new facility has been installed on the ground floor of the experimental building KUBIK, located in Derio, Vizcaya (Spain). DECKUBIK simulates a dwelling, with two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The spaces are equipped with the necessary infrastructure and are prepared to place new products, interfaces, sensor systems, services and technologies that need to be tested and validated by Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) users. This paper will focus in two of the technologies that we brought into practice which can enhance user experience at AAL infrastructure. Interactive furniture with capacitance based sensing which can provide new non-intrusive functionalities, and self-powered control systems.

Eso sería tan tonto como ponerse un letrero que dijera: "¡Róbenme!". Si es inteligente, llevará el dinero donde no se vea. Piense que su información personal es como dinero en efectivo, hay muchos que la ambicionan ahí fuera.
