Quantifying trends in site location with multidimensional scaling

In this paper, I consider some of the problems of quantifying locational trends in archaeology. A... more In this paper, I consider some of the problems of quantifying locational trends in archaeology. A review of the methods available reveals that techniques may either be limited to situations where a considerable knowledge of the nature of the site, or a full set of sites across a research area, may be required. Such data are not common in archaeology, where sites are often damaged by post‐depositional decay or only partially sampled by fieldwork. Because of these problems, I suggest that cluster analysis can be used to identify and measure trends in locational attributes. For this, multidimensional scaling is an ideal technique, since it does not require metric information as input and produces configurations that are easy to interpret visually. By describing the use of multidimensional scaling in the study of the location of early farming settlements in Zululand, I have been able to demonstrate some of the advantages of this approach, and to suggest some ways in which the method may be improved for future application.

This paper reviews the concept of race as applied in southern Africa, and with particular referen... more This paper reviews the concept of race as applied in southern Africa, and with particular reference to the idea of the “Negro”. After examining earlier work in the field of physical anthropology, more recent theoretical concepts are applied in a critique of modern practice. It is concluded that the revolution in physical anthropological theory has been largely “silent”, with the consequence that new ideas have not been systematically applied in archaeology. It would seem that there is little firm, and still acceptable, evidence for the identity of early farming communities in southern Africa.

Ceramic classifications may be particularly informative when seeking to understand the manner in ... more Ceramic classifications may be particularly informative when seeking to understand the manner in which the contemporary environment moulds archaeological interpretations. Methods of ceramic classification used for southern African Iron Age material have been drawn from both British and American archaeology and, although there are superficial differences in technique, both approaches have a similar perception of the nature of Iron Age society. In this model, ceramic cultures and traditions are identified with tribes and the assumptions of colonial ethnography perpetuated. It is suggested that this style of interpretation reflects a general, heightened ethnic awareness in southern Africa.
