I have had the unfortunate experience of leading through a number of critical events at the same time. My secret sauce has always been - 1. Prepare for uncertainty ahead of time. You cannot prepare for a crisis while it is unfolding. 2. Stay organized, be it through technology, a white board or paper and pen. You must always know who, what, where, when and how problems are being solved. 3. Trust in your team and that you have trained them to handle the crisis. 4. Know that you cannot handle everything yourself and you can NEVER get so deep into the weeds in one problem that all of the other problems get neglected. 5. Multi-tasking is crucial. 6. Be a leader, not a boss. 7. Never give up, remain calm and be the rock to lean on.

I have had multiple opportunities to deal with crisis of different categories (natural disasters, Covid pandemic, financial, etc) and my view is that the best things to do are: - Keeping yourself and your teams focused on what can be controlled. Often you cannot control external factors but you can control what you and your organization will/can do. - Think about a crisis as an opportunity for learning. How to be more agile, more prepared for it in the future. Crisis are always opportunities for doing things differently and implementing change. - Most crisis are not about life or death... it's important to distinguish which ones are what and to keep a perspective. - Take action and take decision. - Over communicate. It helps the teams.

Slow down to speed up clarity in your thinking & decision making. Always think of risk & impact on people but ensure decisions are clear & deal with the matter effectively.

Focus first and foremost on what you can control and influence. Acknowledge and leave everything else behind. Build a parking lot of all things that are possibly important but not for âright nowâ. Ask yourself: what is the one thing I can do that will make the biggest difference. Focus on it and get it across the finish line. Aim at 80/20. Share, share, share and ask others to poke holes into it Reduce cognitive load by putting in place some routine, even in the most austere environment. Keep some âme timeâfor regular physical exercise. Chocolate. Chocolate. Chocolate.

Itâs about getting in front of peopleâs emotion/leadership style. Normally a bit anxious, a bit of a micromanager, a little impatient when you hit an obstacle? People telegraph how they respond in a crisis. In a crisis peopleâs normal emotional posture is magnified. Proactively, make sure theyâre trained and aware of response processes. When multiple incidents occur or you have a cascading crisis, quickly assess, prioritize (example, what are the top three actions we need to achieve in the next 30 minutes) and communicate, communicate, communicate. Finally, stick to the script. You have a process that works. Stick to it.
