Egil Bakka received his Magister deegre in Ethnology at the University of Oslo in 1973 with a dissertation on traditional Norwegian dance. He was then immediately engaged to build a new institution which is at present the Norwegian Centre for Traditional Music and Dance located at Norwegian University of Science and Technology. In 1989 he was called to become and adjunct professor at the Department of Music at this university. He buildt up a program of Dance studies where he is now professor and program chair.
Egil Bakka has concentrated his work on tradtional dance, doing extensive field work in all parts of Norway and in some of the other Nordic countries.
His reasearch interests are based in his work with dance, particularly traditional dance and includes movement analysis, dance history, ethnochoreology, and he is currently engaged in the Nordic research program Dance in Nordic Spaces, he is secretary for a substudy group of the ICTM studygroup on Ethnochoreology: Rounddances, 19th century derived couple dances and coordinates the Erasmus Intensive Program IPEDAK.

The first decades of the twentieth century, which is the time span studied in this article, saw fundamental changes in the dance culture of the Western world. New trends unfolded, that through the century turned into mainstream phenomena. The Nordic countries were early to act on the idea of converting extracts from traditional dancing into organized folk dance activity. Nordic dance teachers were challenged by the new Afro-American ballroom dances that for the first time brought the sparks of innovation in social dancing from the Americas.Nordic theatre dance started getting impulses of what was later labelled Modern Dance, challenging the hegemony of classical ballet.Dance categories, such as all those mentioned above, were situated not only in relation to society in general, but also in relation to each other.
A main point argued in this article is that dance also needs to be studied as a broad phenomenon involving a majority of the population and not just as isolated categories to be understood merely in their separate spaces. An attempt to do this will be offered here, and the categories will also be studied in relation to each other. A concrete point of departure will be social background or class of the agents, accessed through the professions of the agents’ parents. It is an attempt to read the dancing as part of larger structures in terms of the spaces it occupied and through lenses of class.
