Assistance of Students with Mathematical Learning Difficulties—How Can Research Support Practice?—A Summary

When looking at teaching and learning processes in mathematics education students with mathematic... more When looking at teaching and learning processes in mathematics education students with mathematical learning difficulties or disabilities are of great interest. To approach the question of how research can support practice, an important step is to clarify the group or groups of students that we are talking about. The following contribution firstly concentrates on the problem of labelling the group of students having mathematical difficulties as there does not exist a single definition. This problem might be put down to the different roots of mathematics education on the one hand and special education on the other hand. Research results with respect to concepts and models for instruction are multifaceted and related to specific content and mathematical topics as well as underlying views of mathematics. Taking into account inclusive education, a closer orientation to mathematical education can be identified and the potential of selected teaching and learning concepts can be illustrated. Beyond this, the role of the teacher and the corresponding teacher education programs are discussed.

Focusing on Dyscalculia: Contributions from a Historical-Cultural Lens

This article considers issues related to developmental dyscalculia, a condition that has been ass... more This article considers issues related to developmental dyscalculia, a condition that has been associated with specific difficulties in the learning of mathematics. It begins with an attempt to locate a sample of research undertaken within Brazil, in order to identify the perspectives on dyscalculia which characterise these works. In the small number of dissertations and theses that were encountered, definitions of dyscalculia and the manner in which it is diagnosed tended to emphasise biogenetic and neurological factors in isolation from social and cultural ones. To augment this sample, we went on to search for articles published in Brazilian research journals also related to this theme, finding that they were also characterised by the same tendencies. We argue that implicit in the perspectives emphasised is a view of the developmental potential in mathematical ability as something that is largely dependent on individual brain-based factors. As we focus on the Brazilian research in the light of other research into mathematical difficulties, we highlight some limitations associated with using current neuropsychological studies and question whether dyscalculia is purely associated with a specific congenital brain-based disorder. Our explorations of this question are informed by research in the tradition of Historicalcultural psychology and we argue that, as an alternative to the current deficit model, dyscalculia might be better understood by approaches which see the development of mathematical abilities as mediated by cultural, historical and social resources, alongside biogenetic and neurological ones.

A atividade, aqui retomada, explorou ideias do Sistema de Numeração Decimal e recorreu a modalidades sensoriais e expressões corporais como meios de produção e representação matemática. O artigo destaca contribuições desse tipo de atividade para o reconhecimento de diferentes maneiras de expressão e representação matemática e para o (re)estabelecimento de relações com objetos de conhecimento da matemática escolar por caminhos diferentes dos que os licenciandos estavam acostumados. O programa de pesquisa “Rumo à educação matemática inclusiva” tem três objetivos principais: investigar novas formas de expressar conceitos matemáticos que respeitem a diversidade dos aprendizes; contribuir para a formação de professores, instrumentalizando-os para trabalhar em classes inclusivas e compreender a relação entre experiências perceptivas e conhecimento. Neste artigo, examinamos como as teorias da cognição corporificada, associadas às perspectivas qu... more Neste artigo, examinamos como as teorias da cognição corporificada, associadas às perspectivas que postulam relações recíprocas entre ferramentas e pensamento põem em questão as hierarquias epistemológicas que continuam a dominar crenças sobre o desenvolvimento de conceitos matemáticos. Após a apresentação dos referenciais teóricos que fundamentam nossa pesquisa, descrevemos a hierarquia intra-inter-trans apresentada por Piaget e Garcia (1987). Usando dados de um estudo realizado com dois alunos cegos que utilizaram meios táteis para construir ampliações de figuras planas, consideramos de que forma as tarefas e as ferramentas podem, a priori, privilegiar as trajetórias na direção desta hierarquia. Também analisamos as estratégias pelas quais os alunos cegos veem as propriedades matemáticas embutidas nas ferramentas e nas tarefas, usando as mãos ao invés de seus olhos como ferramentas para visualizar, e como suas estratégias evidenciam um trânsito mais flexível entre as perspectivas intra, inter e trans, apresentando indícios que a ordenação hierárquica não deveria ser vista como absoluta. 1 Este texto foi elaborado a partir de um artigo publicado nos Anais do V SIPEM, com o título "Das relações entre figuras para relações em um espaço matematizável: as percepções de alunos cegos sobre transformações geométricas", e apresentado no GT9. This paper explores the algebraic expressions of deaf learners as they explore and construct sequ... more This paper explores the algebraic expressions of deaf learners as they explore and construct sequences using the digital microworld Mathsticks. More specifically, it attempts to identify how the deaf students coordinated bodily, discursive and digital resources in order to attribute their own personal senses to the notion of variable. Examples of their interactions with the tasks and tools are analysed to identify evidence of the presence of the three conditions of algebraic thinking, indeterminacy, denotation and analyticity. Our findings suggest that the creation of a shared sign "secret number" to represent the idea of variable was central in facilitating the students to adopt algebraic rather than arithmetic approaches and to appropriate the idea of a general term.

Este artigo avalia como as definicoes e papeis atribuidos a inclusao na Educacao Matematica se de... more Este artigo avalia como as definicoes e papeis atribuidos a inclusao na Educacao Matematica se desenvolveram ao longo do tempo no contexto do programa de pesquisa Rumo a Educacao Matematica Inclusiva. A inclusao na Educacao Matematica tem sido interpretada de formas diferentes, como uma ideologia e como uma maneira de ensinar, cada uma delas associada ao seu proprio conjunto de significados e operacionalizacoes. Metodos associados a analise critica do discurso foram utilizados para analisar 86 textos publicados entre 2003 e 2018 no contexto desse programa de pesquisa, com o proposito de identificar suas posicoes em relacao aos discursos associados a inclusao na sociedade e inclusao na sala de aula . Nossos resultados sugerem um movimento de tendencias que inicialmente focavam uma ideologia a partir de abordagens de ensino relacionadas inclusao na sala de aula, para abordagens que consideram os significados e operacionalizacoes associados a inclusao na sociedade.
