What is FCAMPT?

FCAMPT stands for ‘Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy’. In Canada, we recognize these physiotherapists through the designation of ‘FCAMPT’ or by the CAMPT-Certified logo featured on business cards, websites, clinic referral pads, and on signage within clinics. CAMPT-Certified physiotherapists have advanced training and clinical abilities in Orthopaedic assessment as well as manual (hands-on) therapeutic treatment techniques.

So are all physiotherapists in Canada CAMPT-Certified?

No, only some physiotherapists in Canada are CAMPT-Certified physiotherapists. CAMPT-Certified physiotherapists are those who earn their FCAMPT designation by completing an internationally accredited physiotherapy education program beyond the core university education required to become a physiotherapist in Canada.

Are FCAMPT physiotherapists only found in Canada?

Yes and no. FCAMPT is the Canadian version of this specific education designation. FCAMPT-type physiotherapists can be found in many countries around the world, however, each country will identify these therapists differently.

Where does the FCAMPT education come from?

FCAMPT education is hosted through several Canadian-based education committees and universities, however, the education taught is regulated by the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapists (IFOMPT). IFOMPT is the regulatory body for all countries who teach or have practicing FCAMPT-type physiotherapists.

Why would a physiotherapist want to become CAMPT-Certified?

FCAMPT training improves the physiotherapists ability to:

1. Identify, understand and treat a wide range of injuries and diseases.
2. To use hands-on assessment and treatment techniques which can improve accuracy and results.
3. To integrate research into assessment and treatment making treatment and results more consistent.
4. To think globally about injuries including what it does to function AND the impact on daily life. This means not just walking, driving and sleeping – but how it impacts family, work, financial income, hobbies, social and public responsibilities, emotions, relationships, stress… and more.
5. Think globally about diseases not just be focused on what hurts, but what led to the pain, what healing and recovery can be expected, how long healing will take, what the impact will be long term on joints, nerves, organs, balance, coordination, medications… and more.
6. To perform joint manipulations as a treatment technique.

What are joint manipulations techniques?

Joint manipulation is a unique, high level, regulated skill that can help to reduce pain and improve movement and function. More specifically, joint manipulation is the application of a rapid force movement that helps to create space (or gapping) of a joint. The gapping created helps to change the firing pattern of pain nerves, allowing a person to experience less pain.

Why choose joint manipulation as a therapy?

Research has shown that manipulation therapy in combination with other therapy components such as education and exercise, can
 help you return to pain-free living faster. Techniques such as thrust manipulation have demonstrable benefits for reducing muscle pain and tension, and for restoring normal joint movement.

FCAMPT therapists use scientific and clinical evidence and the biopsychosocial framework of each individual patient to guide the application of manipulation.

I’m a physiotherapist, how do I become FCAMPT?

FCAMPT is a trademarked and protected title, which shows you have completed post-graduation training in hands on therapy techniques that meet international standards. The CAMPT-Certified program is designed to raise awareness of this title and brings many benefits.

To become a Fellow of CAMPT (FCAMPT), you must meet these requirements:

• Licensed physiotherapist
• Successful completion of an IFOMPT accredited program
• Current membership with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association
• Current membership with the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association
• Up to date with CAMPT registration fees.

What are the requirements for graduates of Canadian programs to become CAMPT-Certified?

To become CAMPT-Certified, you must meet these requirements

1. Currently registered as a member in good standing by a Canadian Provincial Physiotherapy Regulatory College as defined by the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators.
2. A member in good standing of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and a member of the Orthopaedic Division of the CPA
3. Physiotherapists licensed in Canada must be graduates of one of the following programs:
   • Orthopaedic Division of the CPA: The Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy.
   • Western University: Master of Clinical Science in Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy.
   • McMaster University: The Masters course-based option in the Rehabilitation Science Program.
   • University of British Columbia: Graduate Certificate in Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapy Program
4. They complete the CAMPT registration process including adherence to the CAMPT fellowship code of conduct
5. They agree to submit the annual registration fee and the CAMPT Get-Started Package fee.

What are the requirements for graduates of international programs to become CAMPT-Certified?

To confirm your eligibility for reciprocity in Canada, please find your country of training under Member Organizations and ensure your program is listed as an accredited program.

International program graduates must demonstrate they have met all the requirements for Fellowship in the IFOMPT member organization (MO) of the country in which they received their OMPT training. This may be demonstrated by either:

1. Documentation that authenticates the applicant’s successful completion of an IFOMPT accredited program. This may be demonstrated by either:
   • A copy of the applicants graduating diploma OR
   • A certified letter by the administration of the IFOMPT accredited program that clearly identifies the program by title, its location (full address), the applicant by full name, and the administrations’ support of completion
2. Documentation that authenticates the applicant has met all the requirements for Fellowship in the MO of the country in which they received their OMT training. This may be demonstrated by either:
   • A copy of a valid certificate of Fellowship in the MO OR
   • A letter from the executive of the MO certifying the candidate as having met all the requirements for Fellowship in the MO OR
   • A certified letter by the administration of the IFOMPT accredited program that attests their program as having all the educational standards required for Fellowship consideration by the host country MO.
3. At the time of application for reciprocity with CAMPT, the applicant has satisfied all of the following:
   • They are currently registered as a member in good standing by a Canadian Provincial Physiotherapy Regulatory College as defined by the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators
   • They are a member in good standing of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA)
   • They are a member in good standing of the Orthopaedic Division of the CPA
4. They complete the CAMPT registration process including adherence to the CAMPT fellowship code of conduct
5. They agree to submit the annual registration fee, the CAMPT Get-Started Package fee and a one-time $50 administration charge

Does CAMPT have a parental leave policy?

Yes, we do.

• All members need to renew their membership even during a parental leave.
• If a member is on parental leave during the renewal period, this member can benefit from a 75% discount by requesting a Parental Leave coupon code for use during renewal.
• The Fellow is required to renew their membership the following registration year for the full annual fee.
• Please note that FCAMPT and CAMPT are trademarked and protected titles. If you fail to maintain your membership you may not promote yourself as FCAMPT as this is a registered trademark of CAMPT.

I am an educational institution that would like to become IFOMPT accredited, how do I do that?
