The story of this site has and is still changing considerably, especially in the last couple of years with the recovery of a number of documents. This paper explores the history of the site and refers to new evidence gathered mainly from notarial archives.

Did Christianity tolerate the old religions? Were communities divided or was the process smooth? And how far can the archaeological record help guide in these debates? This paper looks to the archaeology of 4th century Malta and specifically at the late Roman funerary hypogea in the western end of the Island at the town of Rabat. These hypogea have attracted scholars as early as the 19th century due to their intriguing architectural forms and decorations carved out of the soft local globigerina limestone. Excavations in one of these catacombs during the mid-1950s revealed 4th-century frescoes and epitaphs: these are of high archaeological importance as their content reveals important information on the religious beliefs of the time. Furthermore, the positioning of these frescoes potentially shed light on the interrelationship between pagan, Jewish and Christian communities living on 4th-century Malta. This paper outlines the archaeological evidence for these different religions on Malta and asks if the expressions of faith of these communities through art and funerary architecture were distinctive and how far these ‘speak’ of ‘Christianisation’ or of ‘conflict’. Can we see here one or many Maltese religious ‘dialogues’ and how different is this from changes evident elsewhere in the 4th century Roman Mediterranean?

It also gives information on an excavation methodology that has been developed over the years by Heritage Malta and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, but which reached a good level of refinement with the re-investigation of the St Augustine’s Catacombs.
