Within this context, this article studies linguistic ecology in light of sustainable development and wellbeing in communities of Dolgan and Evenki—small-numbered indigenous peoples living in the Arctic zone of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Linguistic ecology is associated with the study of factors affecting the functioning and development of language, as well as with the search for ways and means of preserving and enriching language. Monitoring the processes taking place in the speech practices of society makes it possible to judge some negative phenomena and trends in the language.

Learning a language from different positions, namely from the point of view of a cognitive approach, helps to study the person himself: his intellectual, mental, social, ethno-national components, his linguistic consciousness. Psycholinguistic and ethnopsycholinguistic studies of linguistic consciousness, the study of the image of the world of an ethnic group are a new integrated approach. This approach, used in our study, differs in that it is aimed at identifying the ethnocultural specifics of the linguistic consciousness of the Sakha language speakers.

The research includes making comparative analysis of the word in the following languages, conducting linguistic associative experiment. 100 people (men and women of different age and occupation) participated in our associative experiment. It allows us to determine the difference in mentality of Sakha and Yakut native speakers. It has high relevance of this word in both languages. Semes, common for both languages, are identified: «little» and «small». A conclusion is drawn that the meaning of a concept «childhood» in the Russian and English languages are partially similar.

The stimulus-word ‘male’ was chosen due to a growing interest in the images and associations connected with gender. The associative experiment was conducted among the Yakuts and Russians living in Yakutia. The participants were divided into three groups: the Russians; the Yakuts, who considered Russian as their main or only language of communication; and the Yakuts, who considered Yakut as their main language of communication. To achieve the goals of our research, we used the methods of descriptive, comparative, quantitative and interpretative analyses. The result of our study reveals that the perception of the stimulus-word ‘male’ has many commonalities between these experimental groups. This can be explained by the interconnected traditions of the Russians and Yakuts and their shared landscape. However, in the case of the Yakuts, speaking their native language, the responses in the associative field were often found to be notably different from the other two experimental groups. Moreover, their perception of the stimulus ‘male’ shows the retention of traditional worldview elements which the Russian-speaking Yakuts have not preserved.
