Five households from each village were interviewed which makes total sample of 40 households. Interview was conducted with the guide of questionnaire. Respondents were only those who practice agroforestry. The study reveals that Greville robusta, Persea americana and Albizia gummifera are the tree species preferred by 100%. Also the study found that Banana is the mostly preferred crop species by 92.3%.
There are about seven reasons for people of Marangu to prefer the species. The reasons are long supply of needed materials like fuel wood and fodder, inheritance, favorable soil type, favorable weather, beneficial and lack of enough land for other species. The uses of preferred crop species were found to be in two categories, uses to animals and uses to mankind. Among 40 interviewed 2 households use the crop species they prefer for food only and remaining use crop species they prefer for food and trade at the same time. Among forty households 24 households 60%) their uses to animals is fodder only but 15 households (37.5%) use preferred crop species for fodder and bedding.
The uses of preferred tree species was found in two categories, human uses and animal. Marangu rural trees are used as fodder to cattle’s by 60% and 37.5% of all trees are used as fodder and bedding at the same time. The uses of tree species to mankind was found as fuel wood, construction material, and fruits. The most beneficial tree species are Mangifera indica by 60% and the most beneficial crop species is banana by 77.5%. Relationship between preferred species was revealed positively and negatively. Positive relationship include mulching, shade, wind prevention, soil erosion control, climber support and wind prevention. Negative relationships found was based on too much shade, domination, diseases and allelopathy.
