Uber Europa hinweg gibt es viele archaologische Organisationen, mit unterschiedlichsten Geschicht... more Uber Europa hinweg gibt es viele archaologische Organisationen, mit unterschiedlichsten Geschichten, Funktionen, Aufgaben und Zielen. Einige von ihnen – wie beispielsweise die Society of Antiquaries in London oder die Ungarische Historische Gesellschaft (Magyar Tortenelmi Tarsulat) – sind seit dem 19. Jahrhundert etablierte und in ihren Landern hoch renommierte Vereine. Andere Gesellschaften haben eine internationale Ausrichtung, oder z.B. eine bestimmte Periode der Urgeschichte im Fokus. Viele dieser Gesellschaften – vielleicht sogar die Mehrheit von ihnen – beschaftigen sich mit einem spezifischen Raum wie einem Staat, einer Region oder einer Stadt. Daneben gibt es Gesellschaften, die sich auch mit der Praxis der Archaologie beschaftigen, wie beispielsweise die DGUF in Deutschland oder CIfA in Grosbritannien. Es gibt weltweit eine Vielzahl verschiedener Ansatze, Archaologie und Kulturguterschutz zu betrei... more Es gibt weltweit eine Vielzahl verschiedener Ansatze, Archaologie und Kulturguterschutz zu betreiben. Diese reichen von komplett staatlich kontrollierten (das ‚national patrimony‘-Modell) bis hin zu vollstandig privatisierten Programmen (das ‚social licence‘-Modell). Unabhangig vom jeweiligen Ansatz sind fur den Erfolg von Archaologie und Kulturguterschutz – egal wo und unter welchen Umstanden durchgefuhrt – einige fundamentale Parameter ausschlaggebend: Neben den angemessenen Ressourcen mussen die Gesellschaft und die verschiedenen, an Archaologie und Kulturguterschutz beteiligten Interessensgruppen aktiv mit einbezogen werden. Auserdem sollten fur die Umsetzung des jeweiligen Programmes klare Regeln und Kontrollmechanismen existieren. Im Sommer 2017 machte das Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) an deutsche Archaologen d... more Im Sommer 2017 machte das Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) an deutsche Archaologen das Angebot, mit seinen Erfahrungen, einem ausgereiften Regelwerk und Verfahren sowie einer durch das CIfA finanzierten deutschen Koordinatoren-/ Geschaftsfuhrerstelle bei der Etablierung eines tatkraftigen Berufsverbandes zu unterstutzen. Das CIfA zeichnet sich neben seinen ethischen Verhaltensrichtlinien besonders durch sein Akkreditierungssystem fur Individuen und Organisationen aus, welches fur seine Mitglieder – aber auch die gegebenenfalls fachfremde Offentlichkeit (Investoren, Amter, Politiker etc.) – ein wertvoller Masstab fur archaologische Fahigkeiten und Kompetenzen ist. It is associated with the infamous Atlantic slave trade, and over the past few decades, Gorée has become a prime destination for global tourism, particularly for the African diaspora from the New World but also for many Europeans and African nationals. Today, Gorée is a forum where different stakeholders battle over the role, place, and significance of the island in the Atlantic slave trade and its enduring legacies in the present. While Gorée owes much of its reputation to its heritage, including architecture, archaeology, and monuments, recent controversies over site preservation and policy compliance raised questions about heritage presentation and consumption. This article analyzes stakeholders’ attitudes toward archaeology and heritage to gain insights on how they are presented and consumed by different stakeholders and eventually destroyed by them as well. Abstract The range of organizations involved in some way with cultural heritage management stand ... more Abstract The range of organizations involved in some way with cultural heritage management stand in proxy for an equally wide range of concerns and viewpoints. While these viewpoints differ considerably in detail, we suggest that a fundamental objective of all these organizations is to ensure that an appropriate kind and degree of cultural heritage work occurs within development contexts. The last twenty years has witnessed such progress in the underlying principles of economic development (in ‘developed’ or ‘developing’ world countries) that the notion of heritage and economic development as equally necessary in order for a sustainable future is shared by all the major participants. We explicitly include the ‘developers’ as a participant in cultural heritage management. Our experience is that private companies sponsoring development are rarely opposed to undertaking heritage work, although they desperately want clear guidance on what this work is supposed to entail. Both heritage and development organizations have a valuable role to play in promoting sustainable economic development, but our experiences in the very differing desert fringes of Senegal and Mongolia suggests that neither alone, nor the two in concert, are truly effective, and that the role of individuals and organizations acting with professional and ethical responsibility is pivotal in this endeavour.

Mehrere wichtige Merkmale verdeutlichen seine Eigenschaft als Berufsverband und wie er sich von anderen archaologischen Vereinen und Organisationen unterscheidet. Der Aufsatz erlautert, was das CIfA ist und wie es entstand. Welche Motive fuhrten zu seiner Grundung und welche Schwierigkeiten mussten uberwunden werden, um seine heutige gefestigte Stellung zu erreichen? Welche Form von Einfluss und Macht hat das CIfA heute nach einem langen Weg der Entwicklung und Selbst-Etablierung? Der Beitrag skizziert auch die aktuellen Herausforderungen, vor denen das CIfA steht. Zudem wird thematisiert, welches Tun – oder auch Lassen – Dritte heute am CIfA bemangeln. Der Aufsatz erlautert die Rolle des CIfA in der britischen wie auch in der internationalen Archaologie und Bodendenkmalpflege.

It provides an overview of several essays that came out of a session at the European Association of Archaeology Conference in 2017, which focused upon how interpretation can be implemented within daily practices of (cultural resource management) archaeology in a way that provides heritage value. We bring the arguments together into a call for a creative, interpretive archaeology that does not take compliance or academic publications as its end goal but will speak to a far wider range of audiences through the development and presentation of stories and narratives that truly engage and inspire people. This working group will discuss, among others, the following themes, with attention to the roles ... more This working group will discuss, among others, the following themes, with attention to the roles of professionalism, professional associations, and professional codes and regulations: • The working conditions of professional practice and how to improve and sustain them; • The definition of methodological standards and ethical codes for sustainability and delivering benefits to the wider public; • Cohabitation of professional/scientific archaeology with amateur archaeology and pseudo-‐archaeology; • The relationship with the public what benefits can archaeologists deliver and what does 'the public(s) want to get from archaeologists; • What constitutes a minimum legal basis to protect archaeological heritage and keep preventive Archaeology as a sustainable practice.
