The Cancellation of Prime-Time Network Programs: Changing Responses to Costs, Revenues and New Technologies

A study gathered information from "Variety" about production costs and final 32-week season ratin... more A study gathered information from "Variety" about production costs and final 32-week season ratings for prime-time series in order to determine what effect ratings have on whether a program is cancelled. The cancellation threshold against which these series could be judged was based upon final regular-season Nielsen ratings information. The data indicated that high production costs tend to raise the cancellation threshold, while higher revenues tend to lower it. Networks have recently renewed programs with ratings that would have marked the programs for cancellation ten years ago. This trend suggests that networks no longer have the ability or the desire to attain the rating shares they held in the early 1970s. One theory is that increases in xhe absolute number of TV households make each rating point more valuable, thus helping sustain network revenues in the face of competition from new technologies, and overwhelming the cost increases over time and lowering the threshold of cancellation. The present study investigates the influence of micro-blogs on the major agenda-setting media in ... more The present study investigates the influence of micro-blogs on the major agenda-setting media in China in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic railway accident. Study findings are based on a content analysis of micro-blog messages and traditional mainstream media reports that were published in the nine days subsequent to the July 23, 2011 bullet train crash accident. Results suggest that, in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophic train wreck, alternative online media played a decisive role in setting mainstream media agendas and providing a citizen forum on a sensitive issue that their conventional counterparts downplayed, ignored, or missed altogether. In particular, the traditional media's agenda setting power is no longer universal nor singular within micro-blogging outlets. Instead, traditional media-once a monolithic establishment-are now just one of the role players among many competing influences.

Circumvention tools designed to bypass online censorship—such as simple web proxies, virtual priv... more Circumvention tools designed to bypass online censorship—such as simple web proxies, virtual private network service, and so on—are frequently used in countries whose governments impose heavy Internet censorship. Around 18 million Internet users in China are currently using those tools to bypass the Great Firewall and access unblocked online content. In a pioneering empirical investigation of unblocked information seeking in China’s censored online environment, the present study systematically examines a wide range of macro-social and micro-individual factors which affect the use of circumvention tools to bypass Internet censorship under the guidance of the interactive communication technology adoption model. The results reveal that, with the exception of social trust, macro-social factors have only a modest influence on the use of circumvention tools. In contrast, micro-individual-level variables—including perceived technology fluidity, gratifications, and selected demographic variables—play a much larger role in our multivariate model. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Ölçeğin yapı geçerliliğini test etmek amacıyla bireylerin otosansür eğilimleri ile ilişkili ancak ondan bağımsız bir özellik olduğu düşünülen benlik saygısı kavramı da çalışmaya dâhil edilmiştir. Ölçekler 566 üniversite öğrencisine uygulanmıştır. Öncelikle sadece OSE ölçeğinin faktör yapısı teyit edici faktör analizi ile test edilmiştir. Sonuçlar ölçeğin tek faktörlü yapısını desteklemiştir. Ölçekte yer alan ters yönlü iki madde arasındaki korelasyonun çok yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Otosansür eğilimi kavramının benlik saygısı kavramı ile farkını ve ilişkisini incelemek üzere iki ölçeği birden içeren ölçüm modeli teyit edici faktör analizi ile test edilmiştir. Otosansür eğilimi ile benlik saygısı arasında ters yönlü ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Ölçekte yer alan ters yönlü maddelerin ölçeğin yapı geçerliliği ve güvenilirliği üzerindeki olumsuz etkileri tartışılmış ve ileride yapılacak çalışmalara yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

Drawing from third-person effect theory, this study investigates what factors determine the self-others perceptual discrepancy in estimations of Internet pornography influences. Using data from a 2014 online survey (N = 533) conducted in China, study results indicated a significant difference between the perceived effects on self and others. Second, the study confirmed the theoretical linkage between perceived effects on others and respondent support for censorship of pornography. Third, study results revealed that the self-others perceptual gap was influenced by social distance between self and others, perceived feminism and perceived sexual conservatism. Introduction Although the web opens a window for people to search for information and entertainment, online platforms have greatly increased public access to pornography (e.g., Lee and Tamborini, 2005). Internet pornography refers to pornographic materials distributed on the Internet, predominantly via websites, peer-to-peer file sharing, or discussion forums. These sexual materials account for a large proportion of circulated Internet flow (Wu, 2009; Liang and Lu, 2012; O'Donnell and Milner, 2007). Unlike the traditional pornography obtained from rentals, magazines and videotapes-which require effort and cost to purchase-pornographic videos can be downloaded within seconds owing to the high-speed Internet. The key concern with this modality involves the lack of a major gatekeeper governing the circulation of pornography. Compared to other types of pornography, Internet materials have the potential to reach a larger audience and be more detrimental to society (Zhao and Cai, 2008). The present study applied theories of diffusion, technology acceptance, and uses and gratificatio... more The present study applied theories of diffusion, technology acceptance, and uses and gratifications via an exploratory model to explain the photo-messaging behavior of 682 college students. Structural equation modeling results indicate that greater photo-messaging activity within one's social network predicts personal relationship formation and relationship maintenance motives. Relationship maintenance motives had a stronger influence on behavioral intention to adopt photo-messaging than did relationship formation. Technology cluster ownership also predicts perceived ease of use for photo-messaging activity. The technology acceptance model (TAM) conceptualizations were generally supported for photo-messaging.

Online dating sites (ODSs) have become popular with users trying to find partners. The purpose of... more Online dating sites (ODSs) have become popular with users trying to find partners. The purpose of this study was to determine the role that biological and personality traits play in the use of online dating websites. A cross sectional survey with 678 participants-including cohorts from college as well as the general population-provided data for this study. The Five Factor Model personality model (FFM), sexual orientation, and biological sex were utilized as antecedents to the uses of and gratifications from online dating sites. Results uncover sex and sexual orientation differences in both personality traits and gratifications sought from online dating sites. Specifically, women and homosexuals were found to be more neurotic, women were more agreeable, and homosexuals were more open to experiences. Homosexual users sought a wider range of gratifications (relationship, sex partner, distraction, and convenient companion) from online dating sites than their heterosexual counterparts. Women were less likely to use ODSs to find sexual partners, but more likely to use ODSs to be social. Those who were neurotic use dating sites to build an identity, as a convenient companion, and as a distraction. People who are open to experiences were found to use dating sites to be social. Disagreeable people use dating sites because of peer pressure and as a status symbol, and conscientious people were found to use dating sites to find a relationship.
