Policy Report: Social & Emotional Learning

Social and emotional skills are crucial for all of us to thrive in today’s unpredictable world. T... more Social and emotional skills are crucial for all of us to thrive in today’s unpredictable world. Thus, social and emotional learning (SEL) has become a top priority on the agendas of education stakeholders in many countries. From an equity perspective, ensuring that every child has access to SEL requires a systemic approach and a strong commitment from those responsible for formulating educational policies. This policy report is aimed at policymakers eager to widen their understanding, address the challenges and increase the opportunities for social-emotional learning in their education system. The report is a joint effort by HundrED and the LEGO Foundation to highlight relevant research, share key challenges and showcase successful solutions implemented across the world.

decade, Supercell has supported initiatives both in Finland and globally, ranging from our free H... more decade, Supercell has supported initiatives both in Finland and globally, ranging from our free Helsinki-based coding school Hive centred around a gamified curriculum, to play-based accelerated learning programs in Ethiopia and Uganda. Games create a sense of belonging-of community, empathy and teamwork. They can help us find our footing on the 3rd rung of Maslow's Hierarchy, and from there propel us upwards, fostering self-esteem, creativity, self-expression, problem solving, all the way up to better decision making, critical thinking, strategy and leadership. Games are not passive, they give us agency. That means there's a greater ability to learn new concepts and systems and try things out and fail and try again, to see failure as a means of progression, not the end game. Frameworks Using the lens of Innovation Diffusion theory, we explore the messy middle. A key aspect of the mess is that innovation diffusion is not just about the design of the innovation, it is about the process of diffusing the innovation in a social system. Diffusion is always, and fundamentally, a social interaction. And implementation is right in the middle of that process. We explore the four essential elements of diffusion: → The innovation: Evidence of an innovation's effectiveness is, undoubtedly, an important criterion; however, it is not a sufficient condition for implementation and scale. We explore the five characteristics that, per Rogers, impact an innovation's adoption: relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. → Communication channels: We then look at important actors who serve as carriers of information about an innovation and who can influence its uptake. These actors are internal system leaders like champions and opinion leaders and external actors like change agents. → Time: Innovation implementation is a time-consuming process happening over several years. We explore three aspects that influence time: the characteristics within a community (i.e. how open individuals are to change), the decision process around innovation that actors must go through, and patterns relating to the rate of innovation adoption. → The Social System: As diffusion theory is fundamentally a theory of communication between people, we delve into the premise that the social environment, i.e. the context, is the most important factor for understanding how it is that an innovation spreads and scales. Case Studies and Learnings We examine five diverse cases to delve into the complexities of the messy middle. These are: → HundrED's Tailor-Made collaboration with Helsinki Education Division in Finland, which introduced two wellbeing innovations from international contexts into the primary school curriculum. → HundrED's Tailor-Made collaboration with the Parents as Allies project in the U.S., led by the non-profit organisation Kidsburgh, that supports schools and families to co-design innovative solutions that promote family engagement. → Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL), an approach to learning that groups students according to their learning levels rather than age or grade. We explore implementation in countries in sub-Saharan Africa. → Geneva Global's Speed School and Luminos Fund's Second Chance, two accelerated learning programs, and whose implementation in Ethiopia is the focus of our case. → Sapieduca, a classroom-level, gamified application in Brazil initially developed to increase student engagement.

Now in our 7th Collection, the goal is to inspire a grassroots movement by helping pedagogically sound, ambitious innovations to spread and adapt to multiple contexts across the world.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we as the teachers and researchers of a course titled Global education de... more ABSTRACT In this paper, we as the teachers and researchers of a course titled Global education development informed by theories of decoloniality, report on our analysis of our self-critical and constructive dialogue on the course design, its underlying assumptions, expectations, implementation, success and needs for improvement. We centered decoloniality from the beginning of the course, problematised binary-thinking and encouraged our students to look at issues within the field of development and education in pluriversal ways. Our gestures toward decolonial pedagogy in the course were complicated by our own entanglements with coloniality as well as structural factors such as the context of Finland, where the colonial past is seldom addressed. Despite these contradictions and challenges, we aspire to continue thinking through decoloniality to decenter the dominant liberal frameworks within global education development.
