Bruno Petriccione
Bruno Petriccione was born in 1960. He graduated in Biology in 1985 from "La Sapienza" University of Rome (Italy), with a degree thesis on the high altitude flora and vegetation of the Abruzzo National Park and in 1990, obtained a PhD in ecology, with a thesis on the ecology and phytogeography of alpine grasslands in the Apennines. In 2001, he specialised in management of the natural environment and protected areas at the University of Camerino (Italy) with a thesis on the impact of climate change on the montane ecosystems of protected areas in the Central Apennines. In 2017 he graduated for the second time in Legal Services at the University of Teramo (Italy) with a degree thesis on the history of the protection of ecological values in Italy.
He became an officer in the Italian National Forest Service in 1994 and was national coordinator of the CONECOFOR programme (Forest Ecosystem Monitoring) from 1995 to 2009 and of LTER-Italia (Long-Term Ecological Research Network) from 2006 to 2009. Since 2009, he has served in Abruzzo (Biodiversity and National Parks Department). Since unification of the National Forest Service with the Carabinieri in 2017, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Retired since 2022.
He was National Representative for the National Focal Points of UN-ECE CLRTAP Programmes ICP Forests and ICP Integrated Monitoring of Ecosystems from 1995 to 2009 and National Expert Reviewer of the 4th Assessment Report of I.P.C.C. Climate changes 2007 (impacts, adaptation and vulnerability).
He was Co-chairman of Working Party 2 (Biodiversity assessment and change) of the ALTER-Net Network of Excellence (A Long-Term Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Awareness Research Network), from 2005 to 2009, national expert and representative for UN-ECE ICP Forests in the European Environmental Agency initiative SEBI2010 (Streamlining European Biodiversity Indicators by 2010), from 2006 to 2009, in LTER-Europe, member of the Executive Committee from 2008 to 2009 and chairman of the Expert Panel “Standardization ad harmonization of ecological measurements”, from 2008 to 2009.
He has been full curator of the “Encyclopedia of Life” (http://www.eol.org), since 2013.
He has been National Expert of U.N. Harmony with Nature Knowledge Network, since 2019.
He is author of 154 scientific publications in the sectors of environmental analysis, environmental impact assessments, global changes, monitoring of environmental conditions and the protected area management and planning.
He is author of two articles on the protection of animals, plants and habitats as entities with legal personality and the U.N. Environment First Global Report on Environmental Rule of Law, published in COESPU Magazine, the official journal of the Carabinieri Center of Excellence for Stability Police Units (Vicenza, Italy).
He is author of the book “La protezione dei valori ecologici in Italia” (ISBN 979-12-200-4558-2) ("The protection of ecological values in Italy"), analysing national and European nature protection legislation in Italy, covering the very different topics of the history of nature protection, ecological values and environmental law including the prospects for granting legal personhood to animals, plants and ecosystems.
