In this paper, a methodology is proposed to address robustness aspects related to the application... more In this paper, a methodology is proposed to address robustness aspects related to the application of distributed model predictive control. Two problems are studied: the decomposition problem and the coordination problem in the presence of model errors. Three different MPC strategies are considered: centralized, fully decentralized, and Nash equilibrium based MPC. The methodology requires the computation of closed-loop system's variability via the solution of generalized eigenvalue problem which is formulated as a finite set of linear matrix inequalities. To select the best model decomposition or control strategy based on robust performance, the worst variability for each candidate is minimized by manipulating the input weights of the controller. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the application of the methodology.

Flaring of gases causes serious air pollution in oil processing area and enters many air pollutants such as NOx, CO, CO 2 , SOx and total hydrocarbon into atmosphere. In this study, modeling of a typical gas flare was carried out using MATLAB. The results were compared with experimental data obtained from a gas flare in Petroleum Company in an industrial city of Nigeria. Also the effects of some parameters i.e. flare height and atmospheric conditions were studied on the dispersion pattern of pollutants.

ABSTRACT Quantum chemical calculations are performed using density functional theory (DFT) to inv... more ABSTRACT Quantum chemical calculations are performed using density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the HOMO-LUMO energy gap of the 4,7-di(furan-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole-based (FSeF) donor-acceptor type conjugated polymer which ascertains the optoelectronic properties and plays a crucial role, especially in polymeric solar cell applications. In this paper, the most stable conformers of the FSeF monomer and its corresponding oligomers are investigated at the B3LYP/Def2TZV and B3LYP/LANL2DZ levels of theory, and their molecular structures are revealed. The band gap of the polymer is determined by linear-fitting and extrapolation of the DFT data. This gap is found to be 1.44 eV and 1.45 eV by the B3LYP/Def2TZV, and B3LYP/LANL2DZ with PCM calculations, respectively. Our theoretical findings related to the band gap of the FSeF polymer (PFSeF) are in good agreement with other experimental studies in the literature and, hence, the theoretical methods used in this study are promising for the design of similar donor-acceptor type novel conjugated polymers.

Generalized Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming Modeling of Eco-Industrial Networks to Reduce Cost and Emissions

ABSTRACT Eco-industrial networks are a concept which has received study for almost 30 years as a ... more ABSTRACT Eco-industrial networks are a concept which has received study for almost 30 years as a strategy for improving economics of production facilities while reducing waste. This study focuses on developing a generalized modeling framework in terms of mixed-integer nonlinear programming of an eco-industrial network. The problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization with the objective to reduce life-cycle emissions and maintaining favourable economics. This model lends itself as a developmental tool to assess environmental and economic feasibility of applying eco-park concepts to new construction projects. In addition, the model is formulated to determine feasible transportation distances between facilities, select the appropriate transportation technologies and is built with the intention of modification toward stochastic import/export pricing. The sensitivity of the network configuration to variances in the weighting factors placed on economics or environmental emissions is discussed and the results from multiple weighting scenarios are presented. These results show that the estimated reductions in cost and emissions are less significant than those from previously published work but are founded upon a more realistic network model. Based on our findings, the cost for the integrated set of facilities is shown to be reduced by 24% while the emission reduction is observed at 12.7% for the base scenario examined by the earlier models. These results show less promise than the earlier findings but represent a more realistic assessment of the proposed network. The tools developed by this research present a novel approach to facility planning and policy development for chemical industries. As such, the framework presented herein has the potential to impact facility construction/operation and public policy governing industrial producers; additionally, this research contributes an empirical approach for assessing the practicality of establishing eco-industrial networks and provides an approach for further analyses.

The carbon samples were structurally characterized and examined, respectively, for the application of energy gas (CH4 and H2) storage. It was found that 1) at high pressure end (P &gt; 35 bar) the methane storage capacity is approximately proportional to the surface area while the hydrogen storage capacity is predominated by the volume of micropores; 2) at low pressure end (P &lt; 1bar), however, the adsorption capacity is a strong function of the size and volume fraction of micropores/small micropores. ABSTRACT This paper introduces a systematic methodology and corresponding tools to support the de... more ABSTRACT This paper introduces a systematic methodology and corresponding tools to support the decision-making process for the integration of various improvement options, including new technologies, into existing mature processes. The proposed methodology was applied on a case study focusing on planning the capacity supply to meet the projected electricity demand for the fleet of electric generating stations owned and operated by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). A deterministic mixed integer linear program with a goal to minimize total annualized costs while satisfying various CO2 emission constraints was developed. The results show that achieving the CO2 emission mitigation goal while minimizing costs affects the configuration of the OPG fleet in terms of generation mix, capacity, selection of new technologies and optimal configuration with and without new technologies. By using new technologies including integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) with and without carbon capture and sequestration, the optimum electricity cost obtained was 1.1661 ¢/KW h at base caseload demand with 60% CO2 reduction.

ABSTRACT Photocatalytic Processes for the Removal of Toxic Metal Ions: Semiconductor photocatalyt... more ABSTRACT Photocatalytic Processes for the Removal of Toxic Metal Ions: Semiconductor photocatalytic processes have been studied extensively in recent years due to their considerable advantages in environmental remediation. In this chapter, we address the treatment of hazardous wastewater containing toxic heavy metals using photocatalysis. The chapter reviews the effects of various factors such as catalyst loading, initial concentration of metal ions, presence of electron or hole scavenger, solution pH and light intensity. We start with the appraisal of the fundamental principles and mechanisms of the photocatalytic degradation process, followed by thermodynamic analysis, reaction kinetics and mass transfer effects. In addition to this, the design features, challenges and efficiencies of various photoreactors along with their possible scaling-up options are discussed. Moreover, assessment of harvesting of the solar energy for photoreactions to make photocatalysis a cleaner and a cost-effective treatment method is analysed. Finally, the chapter concludes with the status, efficacy and challenges ahead for the treatment of drinking water and wastewater containing different heavy metals through heterogeneous photocatalysis.

Different samples of igneous and metamorphic rocks from Egypt and Germany have been considered to... more Different samples of igneous and metamorphic rocks from Egypt and Germany have been considered to measure y-ray activity concentrations due to naturally occurring, potentially hazardous radonuclides 226Ra, and ' % The radiation hazard parameters including radiation equivalent activity, gamma-absorbed dose rate, and external and internal hazard indices have been estimated. The gamma-absorbed dose rates in air of rocks in Egypt range from 4.2 to 128.5 nGyh-' with a mean value of 55.3 nGyh-l. For igneous and metamorphic rocks from Gemany, the values of absorbed dose rates fluctuate from 5.1 to 148.6nGyh-', with a mean value of 60.9nGyh". Generally, it is found that the radiation hazard indices in common igneous rocks are distinctly higher in acidic than in ultrabasic rocks. The results are discussed and compared with the corresponding published data.

This article focuses on obtaining optimal mechanical properties of polypropylene-organically modi... more This article focuses on obtaining optimal mechanical properties of polypropylene-organically modified montmorillonite (PP-OMMT) nanocomposites for different objectives using simulations. The primary objective was to minimize the cost of the PP-OMMT nanocomposites. The other aim was to obtain specific desired properties of the nanocomposite (irrespective of the nanocomposite cost). The later simulation results are useful in designing products where quality of the nanocomposite cannot be compromised (while the cost of the PP-OMMT is secondary). The properties that were optimized include Young’s modulus and oxygen permeation. Regression models were obtained and used to predict these properties as functions of corresponding compositions of the composites. Further, optimization procedures were simulated using these models along with other constraints and objective functions. All simulations were programmed using MATLAB version 7.10.0 (R2010a).
