The Manual of Style is a style guide for users that aims to make the encyclopedia easier to read. One way of presenting information is often just as good as another, but consistency promotes professionalism, simplicity and greater cohesion in Wikipedia articles.

General guidelines

[edit source]

Nā inoa me nā paukū (names and sections)

[edit source]
  • Article titles generally comprise nouns or noun phrases.
  • The title should be short: using more than ten words may defeat the purpose.
  • Only the first letter (not counting the ‘okina) of the first word, letters in acronyms, and the first letter of proper nouns are capitalized; all other letters are in lower case (Hale ki‘i‘oni‘oni, not Hale Ki‘i‘oni‘oni).
  • If the noun of the title is singular, no article is needed to precede the noun (Ka‘a, not Ke ka‘a). If the noun of the title is plural, use the plural article (such as Nā ‘ōlelo o ka honua).
  • Pronouns and possessives (kou, lākou) are normally avoided.
  • Links are never used, in favor of linking the first occurrence of the item in the text.
  • Special characters such as the slash (/), plus sign (+), curly brackets ({ }) and square brackets ([ ]) are avoided; unless it is a part of a formal name, the ampersand (&) is replaced by and or a me.
  • Inā hiki, pono e hoʻohana i kēia hua no ka ʻokina ( ʻ ). Mai hoʻohana i nā hua ʻē aʻe, e like me ke koma luna ( ' ), ka "tick" ( ` ), a me kekahi hua ʻokina ʻē aʻe ( ʻ ). No ke kikokiko pono ʻana o ka ʻokina, e kikokiko i kēia mau pihi: option-] ma ka Mac, a i ʻole Alt-0145 ma ka Windows. ʻO kekahi hoʻi, hiki ke hoʻohana i ke anakuhi no ka ʻokina. No kēia hana, e kikokiko {{okina}}. No nā ʻike hou, hele iā Wikipedia:ʻOkina.
    • The ‘okina that should be used is ( ‘ ) and not the apostrophe ( ' ), the tick ( ` ), or another type of ‘okina ( ʻ ). In order to produce the correct ‘okina, use option-] on a Mac, Alt-0145 on Windows, the ‘okina template by typing {{okina}}, or the editing toolbox. See Wikipedia:ʻOkina for more information. (still tentative)

Nā ʻatikala

  • E ʻoluʻolu nō, e hoʻohana i nā ʻokina a me nā kahakō no nā huaʻōlelo āpau (inā hiki).
    • Where applicable, use ʻokina and kahakō for all letters.
