Given the ubiquity of these names in Muslim thought and popular devotion, the subject is ripe for consideration from an interreligious lens. Here, I suggest tradition-specific avenues for adherents of various conceptual systems to explore the cross-conceptual resonances of these divine names. I outline how particular names, and the concept of divine names more broadly, may resonate with those who seek paradigms for conceptual enrichment, moral introspection, and spiritual development across metaphysical paradigms. My comparative lens includes Abrahamic and broader Near Eastern religions, dharmic religions, West African traditions, East Asian traditions, select modern pluralistic traditions, and the ‘spiritual but not religious.’

A conviction of this unadulterated monotheism unifies Muslims across time and place; it is found in the core profession of faith (the shahāda) and reinforced by thousands of Qur'anic verses and prophetic teachings. Drawing on the Qur'anic discourse, sayings of the Prophet Muḥammad, and select theological works, this Element provides a concise and accessible introduction to the most fundamental concept in Islamic thought. The Element explains the nature and attributes of God and examines how tawḥīd informs conceptions of truth, morality, piety, and virtue.

facet of human experience; from a person’s origination from a sex act, to
awareness of the sexed body, desires, and inclinations, to sexual encounters,
and even (potentially) to otherworldly sexual experiences, many aspects of
sex and sexuality enter into the Qur’anic discourse. The Qur’an deals with
issues of human reproduction, uses terms that refer to sexual anatomy and
intercourse, and presents stories of sexual desire and of licit versus illicit sex. Qur’anic narratives address sex and sexuality in the cosmological, biological, and social realms. The imperative to regulate sexuality is, in fact, one of the Qur’an’s most accentuated narrative tropes.

I highlight patterns and explore didactic and affective dimensions of this speech. When, where, how, and to whom do women and girls speak? How do girls and women assert political, religious, and other types of epistemic authority through their speech? What information does their speech imply about their characters, values, and outlooks? What virtues does this speech aim at instilling? How does the speech of pious women compare to the speech of pious men? I also discuss women’s interactions with God and divine messengers.

The chapter moves chronologically through the revelatory sequence of Qur’anic verses involving female figures, thereby situating these figures within and against the backdrop of the unfolding mission of the prophet Muhammad, as it has been remembered within Islamic oral traditions. This heuristic allows me to demonstrate how Qur'anic and early Islamic female personalities served as exemplars of vice and virtue for a religious polity in formation. The chapter highlights relevant rhetorical and stylistic elements of the Qur’an, advances new methodological approaches for integrating Muslim oral traditions into the academic discipline of Qur’anic studies, and advances some of the book's broader arguments in favor of female-centric exegesis.

As Ali told the Buffington Post, it is in part the "culture of impunity" for perpetrators of sexual violence that she hopes to counteract by helping to bring stories to light and engender communal conversation.2 In conversation with the editors at

Though guidance is derived from Qur’anic verses condemning infanticide, these verses do not have a clear, binding, one-to-one application for the unborn. Moreover, gaps exists between studies of women’s reproductive-related experiences and the expertise of those individuals put in communally authorized positions to offer religious counsel on matters pertaining to reproductive health. In light of these gaps, this short essay highlights promising new scholarship and directions for ethical thinking related to Muslim women's reproductive lives.
