Pramod Kumar Yadav., is working at G. B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development Almora. He is M. Sc. (Biodiversity and Conservation) from University School of Environment Management, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University New Delhi. His expertise is in applications Geospatial Technology in forest inventory mapping, wildlife conservation, wetland conservation and management, wildlife habitat suitability modeling and Human-wildlife conflict analysis. His recent interests are ecosystem dynamics in climate change scenarios, assessment of AR-CDM, REDD+ and application of RS & GIS in frontier areas. He also worked for “Delineating Project and Reference Areas in Garo Hills and Greater Manas of North East India for REDD+ Project” of Wildlife Trust of India.

Collection and trade of these MAPs from the wild provides livelihood opportunity for millions of rural dwellers but it has brought ecological and social vulnerability in the country. A robust system for traceability and ensuring chain of command for wild collected products will not only check illegal wild collection but will also guarantee better remuneration to the harvesters for their products in national and international markets. In this scenario, there is need to implement market-based tools such as FairWild certification for conservation, sustainability and equitable trade of the MAPs from the wild. These initiatives may enhance investment in education, health and food security which could play key role in building resilience among rural communities to fight against biodiversity loss and climatic vulnerability.

The team has also tried to identify key stakeholders while conducting education and outreach programmes for sustainable harvesting of caterpillar fungus and to conserve the local environment of the region. However, primary information pertaining to harvesting pattern, trade and habitat of caterpillar fungus in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, and challenges and opportunities for harvesters were also investigated by conducting questionnaire surveys at the household level in the Dhauliganga Valley. The field surveys were conducted among the different stakeholders from May, 2015, to July, 2016. This study represents the first comprehensive effort to document harvesting pattern and trade of caterpillar fungus along with the quantification of its contribution to the household economy of local community of the NDBR.
