The aim of this study was to compare the effects of the double-plate appliance (DPA) and the face... more The aim of this study was to compare the effects of the double-plate appliance (DPA) and the facemask (FM) in treating skeletal Class III malocclusions. Data were based on the pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalograms of 28 subjects with skeletal and dental Class III malocclusions. In the first group (7 girls, 7 boys; mean age, 10 years 3 months), each subject wore a DPA with 2 Class III elastics, which exerted a force of 350-400 g day and night except for meals. In the second group (7 girls, 7 boys; mean age, 10 years 5 months), each subject wore a Delaire-type FM with a removable intraoral appliance with a total force of 600 g. The patients were instructed to wear the appliance approximately 16 hours a day. An untreated control group (6 girls, 8 boys; mean age, 9 years 8 months) was formed that matched the treatment groups according to sagittal skeletal and dental classifications. Thirteen angular and 14 linear measurements were evaluated. The increase in ANB angle and the decrease in maxillomandibular differential in the treated groups showed significant differences compared with the control group (P Ͻ .05). The increases in ANB and SNA angles in the FM group were significantly greater than in the DPA group (P Ͻ .05). The increases in lower facial height and Me-ANS in the FM group were significantly different compared with the other groups (P Ͻ .05). The overjet increased significantly in both treatment groups (P Ͻ .001), but, in the DPA group, overjet was significantly greater than in the FM group (P Ͻ .05). Protrusion of the maxillary incisors and retrusion of the mandibular incisors in the DPA group showed significant differences compared with the other groups (P Ͻ .05).

The Wilson rapid molar distalization appliance for Class II molar correction was used with 26 patients; two groups of 13 patients each were formed. In the first group (9 girls, 4 boys with a mean age 11 years 5 months), mandibular anchorage was gained by a modified lip bumper with a standard lingual arch of 0.9-mm stainless steel. The second group (7 girls, 6 boys, with a mean age of 13 years) had a 0.016 x 0.016-inch utility arch, with a 3-dimensional lingual arch for anchorage. Cephalometric radiographs were taken before and after maxillary first molar distalization. Materials and Methods: The material consisted of lateral cephalometric radiographs of 45 children with skeletal and dental Class III malocclusion. The first treatment group comprised 15 patients (mean age 5 11 years) treated with FM. The second treatment group comprised 15 patients (mean age 510 years 9 months) treated with DPA-FM. The third group comprised 15 patients (mean age 5 10 years 5 months) used as controls. The paired t-test was used to evaluate the treatment effects and changes during the treatment and observation period in each group. Differences between the groups were determined by variance analysis and the Duncan test. Results: With the DPA-FM and FM appliances, the SNA and ANB angles increased significantly. These changes were statistically different compared with the control group. Lower facial height showed a greater increase in both treatment groups than in the control group. Molar relation showed a greater increase in the DPA-FM group than in the FM group. The increase in U6/ANS-PNS angle in the FM group was significantly different from the DPA-FM and control groups. The L1/NB angle and Pg-T increased significantly only in the FM group, but no significant difference was found between the treatment groups. Conclusions: In the treatment of Class III malocclusion, both appliances were effective. The significant sagittal changes in the lower incisors and pogonion in the FM group compared with the nonsignificant changes in the DPA-FM group might be due to the restriction effect of acrylic blocks in the DPA-FM group. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of Jaspe... more The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of Jasper Jumper (JJ) and activator-headgear (AcHg) combinations and an untreated control group. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 37 Class II high-angle patients. Twenty of them (mean age: 12.4 ± 0.61 years) were treated with JJ and 17 of them (mean age: 10.9 ± 0.74 years) were treated with AcHg. Mean treatment time was 5 months for the JJ group and 11 months for the AcHg group. Control group consisted of 20 Class II high angle patients (mean age: 10.4 ± 0.41 years) and mean observation period was 10 months. Results: Co-A showed signifi cant increase in the JJ and control groups while SNA angle decreased signifi cantly in only JJ group. Increase in SNB angle in AcHg group was signifi cantly greater than in the JJ and control groups. In the JJ group, mandibular incisors protruded signifi cantly. Conclusion: Both the AcHg and JJ treatments had restraining effect on maxillary growth, but stimulated signifi cant mandibular growth. Anteroposterior discrepancy was corrected in the AcHg group mostly by the mandibular growth compared to JJ treatment. Maxillary incisors were retroclined in the AcHg group while mandibular incisors were proclined in the JJ group.

The open coil springs were activated with bent Omega stops and Class II intermaxillary elastics. The mandibular anchorage was gained by a 0.016 × 0.016 utility arch with a 3D lingual arch or a lip bumper with a standard lingual arch. The lateral cephalograms taken before and after treatment formed the material of the research. A Wilcoxon test was used to statistically evaluate the treatment effects.

The material consisted of the pre-post treatment\pre-post observation lateral cephalograms of 65 subjects with skeletal and dental Class III malocclusion. In the first group 21 patients (mean age: 10 years, 6 months) were treated with a Delaire-type facemask (FM). In the second group 22 patients treated (mean age: 10 years) with MTTBA. The remaining 22 children (mean age: 9 years, 7 months) were observed without treatment for 11 months. Increase in SNA, N-FH ⊥ A, and ANB angles were significantly greater in the treatment groups compared to the control group. However, ANB angle showed a significantly greater increase in the FM group (2.8 ± 0.30°) than in the MTTBA group (2.0 ± 0.18°). The overjet and molar relation increased significantly in both treatment groups, but in the FM group (5.2 ± 0.40 mm) increase in overjet was significantly greater than in the MTTBA group (4.0 ± 0.27 mm). Mesial movement of upper molar and incisor were found to be greater in the FM group compared to the modified TTBA group. Both appliances were found to be effective in the treatment of Class III malocclusion. Their skeletal and dental effects showed differences due to their design.

The purpose of this study was to determine the dental and skeletal effects of facemask therapy, a... more The purpose of this study was to determine the dental and skeletal effects of facemask therapy, and to evaluate the effect of age on treatment response. The material consisted of lateral cephalometric radiographs of 34 subjects with Class III malocclusions treated with a Delaire type facemask. Two groups of 17 patients each were formed: an early (six girls, 11 boys) and a late treatment group (eight girls, nine boys). At the beginning of treatment, the mean ages were 9 years 8 months for the early treatment group and 12 years 6 months for the late treatment group. The average treatment time was 7 months for both groups. A control group consisting of 17 children with a mean age of 9 years 5 months was formed that matched only the early treatment group according to age, and sagittal dental and skeletal relationships. To differentiate the orthodontic and total effects of the Delaire type facemask, superimpositions were made.

The study material consisted of 30 patients with Class II dental relationships and steep mandibular plane angles. Three groups of 10 patients each were formed. In the first treatment group, forces of 150 gm per side were used for the high-pull component and the cervical component. In the second treatment group, forces of 200 gm per side for the high-pull component and 100 gm per side for the cervical component were applied. In the third treatment group, forces of 100 gm per side were applied for the high-pull component and 200 gm per side for the cervical component. Distal tipping of upper molar was greatest in the third treatment group. Intrusion of the upper molar in the second treatment group and extrusion of the upper molar in the third treatment group were statistically significant. Changes in occlusal and mandibular plane angles showed significant differences between the groups. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 1998;113:316-23.)

The purpose of this study was to determine the dental and skeletal effects of facemask therapy, a... more The purpose of this study was to determine the dental and skeletal effects of facemask therapy, and to evaluate the effect of age on treatment response. The material consisted of lateral cephalometric radiographs of 34 subjects with Class III malocclusions treated with a Delaire type facemask. Two groups of 17 patients each were formed: an early (six girls, 11 boys) and a late treatment group (eight girls, nine boys). At the beginning of treatment, the mean ages were 9 years 8 months for the early treatment group and 12 years 6 months for the late treatment group. The average treatment time was 7 months for both groups. A control group consisting of 17 children with a mean age of 9 years 5 months was formed that matched only the early treatment group according to age, and sagittal dental and skeletal relationships. To differentiate the orthodontic and total effects of the Delaire type facemask, superimpositions were made.

The study material consisted of 30 patients with Class II dental relationships and steep mandibular plane angles. Three groups of 10 patients each were formed. In the first treatment group, forces of 150 gm per side were used for the high-pull component and the cervical component. In the second treatment group, forces of 200 gm per side for the high-pull component and 100 gm per side for the cervical component were applied. In the third treatment group, forces of 100 gm per side were applied for the high-pull component and 200 gm per side for the cervical component. Distal tipping of upper molar was greatest in the third treatment group. Intrusion of the upper molar in the second treatment group and extrusion of the upper molar in the third treatment group were statistically significant. Changes in occlusal and mandibular plane angles showed significant differences between the groups. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 1998;113:316-23.)
