It can be assumed that the city had harbours or piers on the lake, where raw materials, as well as local and exotic products, were traded. However, the connection of the Etruscan town to the bay and the location of its harbours are still unknown and never were the subject of an archaeological investigation. In 2016 the Rome Department of the DAI started an interdisciplinary research project with the goal to locate and explore the potential harbours, as well as to contribute to the reconstruction of the original extension of the bay and its subsequent silting up.

Erste Ergebnisse eines neuen Forschungsprojektes PREFACE On behalf of the 'Associazione Internazionale di Archeologia Classica (AIAC)' the 19 th International Congress of Classical Archaeology took place in Cologne and Bonn from 22 to 26 May 2018. It was jointly organized by the two Archaeological Institutes of the Universities of Cologne and Bonn, and the primary theme of the congress was 'Archaeology and Economy in the Ancient World'. In fact, economic aspects permeate all areas of public and private life in ancient societies, whether in urban development, religion, art, housing, or in death. Research on ancient economies has long played a significant role in ancient history. Increasingly in the last decades, awareness has grown in archaeology that the material culture of ancient societies offers excellent opportunities for studying the structure, performance, and dynamics of ancient economic systems and economic processes. Therefore, the main objective of this congress was to understand economy as a central element of classical societies and to analyze its interaction with ecological, political, social, religious, and cultural factors. The theme of the congress was addressed to all disciplines that deal with the Greco-Roman civilization and their neighbouring cultures from the Aegean Bronze Age to the end of Late Antiquity. The participation of more than 1.200 scholars from more than 40 countries demonstrates the great response to the topic of the congress. Altogether, more than 900 papers in 128 panels were presented, as were more than 110 posters. The publication of the congress is in two stages: larger panels are initially presented as independent volumes, such as this publication. Finally, at the end of the editing process, all contributions will be published in a joint conference volume. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants and helpers of the congress who made it such a great success. Its realization would not have been possible without the generous support of many institutions, whom we would like to thank once again: the Universities of Bonn and Cologne, the Archaeological Society of Cologne, the Archaeology Foundation of Cologne, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the Sal. Oppenheim Foundation, the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Romano-Germanic Museum Cologne and the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn. Finally, our thanks go to all colleagues and panel organizers who were involved in the editing and printing process.

The research project is based upon the analysis of the original documentation and is meant to proof and reconstruct the grave goods of the individual burials and a topographical map of the necropolis. The orientalizing time is a period of big social changes in Etruria, culminating in the formation of the aristocratic society in the 7 th century. The aim of analysing the development of the necropolis of Vetulonia is to study whether and how the social changes and their repercussions can be found in the field. For this purpose, the chronological and topographical development of the cemeteries as well as the burial objects will be researched. Especially the formation of tomb groups, the distribution of objects pertaining to status and gender specificities and the differences between graves of women and men shall be taken into consideration.

The intention of "Comparing Greek Colonies" is to bring geographically and culturally distant regions such as Southern Italy/Sicily and the Black Sea, closer together, not merely to find "similarities and differences", but to broaden the scholars’ perspective and overcome existing, generalizing, and biased models, that are often rooted in local scientific traditions.
The proceedings present the outcome of the 1st San Lorenzo Bellizzi Meeting held between the 16th and 17th of
April 2016. The conference is intended to address new scientific visions and approaches to the Pollino Mountains
in all their complexity. The present volume rests on the results accumulated by several research teams,
which for decades have been engaged in the exploration of the archaeology and history of the area. The presented
articles represent the first combined archaeological approach to the Pollino area. In antiquity, the impressive
Pollino Mountains did not pose a barrier to human mobility. On the contrary, they were a point of passage
and a cultural crossroad for millenniums, being a natural bridge and not a border, thus furnishing connections
between Calabria and Basilicata and between the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian sea.
