Th belong to two morphological groups: 'Messapians' shapes (called 'bacino' and 'zuppiera') and Tarantine Greek shapes (krater, skyphos and lekythos). Thanks to the comparison with te potter iln waste brought to light at Taranto in 1971, it was possible to attribute to Tarantine workshops the manufacturing of Messapian shapes. Moreover, the study of the relationships beween shape, function and decoration allowed us to grasp a close correlation between wine vessels and Dionysian decorative motifs.

Actually, in most cases the visit is precluded because the sites are placed below private buildings or urban roads. However, as often happens, they are affected, for various reasons, by another inevitable trouble: the artefacts preserved inside them until the discover, have been subsequently brought into some museums whereas the monumental structures have been restored, in most cases with provisional works, in order to prevent their collapse. The consequence of this moving, is the de-contextualization of the grave goods and the lack of valorisation of monumental archaeological contexts. An effective solution for these issues could be achieved from the use of technologies that allow a virtual enjoyment of these monuments and the virtual set-up of the grave goods in their original contexts. Based on these premises, thanks to the project CNR-IBAM "Marta Racconta. Storie Virtuali di Tesori Nascosti", co-financed by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Puglia, the National ARchaeological Museum of TAranto (MARTA) will be soon equipped with the installation of a Virtual Platform. This will make 'accessible' ancient monuments from the Greek Taras (the ancient Taranto) currently closed to visitors. In particular, three very interesting monuments have been identified in close cooperation with the Superintendent and with the direction of the Museum of Taranto. The first one is the so-called Tomb of the Festoons, that was found in Via Crispi at the beginning of the last century. At present, it is placed inside a private apartment under the ground floor of a building. The second one, called the Hypogeum of the Gorgons, was discovered some years ago in Via Otranto, but it is now placed below a road pavement. The archaeological and archaeometric studies carried out on these monuments made it possible to develop a wide path of knowledge ranging from funerary rituals to construction techniques.

The presence of a coin bearing the head of the emperor Commodus (180-192 AD) among the materials found has made it possible to date the wreck to the end of the II – beginning of the III century AD. The cargo consisted of 18 sarcophagi and 17 blocks, all of white marble, as well as six alabaster slabs. The marbles were attributed by Ward-Perkins (1965) to the quarries of Aphrodisia and by Parker (1992) to the quarries of Thassos. The salvaged materials were taken to Taranto where currently 15 sarcophagi and 14 blocks, all in white marble remain. Each of these has been catalogued with a view to classifying them in metrological and typological terms, and sorting them into homogeneous groups. The metrological study shows that the Roman foot is the most likely unit of measurement. The typological analysis makes it possible to recognise two types of sarcophagus: 1- rectangular sarcophagi with rectangular cavity (six items), 2- rectangular sarcophagi with apse cavity (nine items). The blocks, of rectangular shape, are semi-worked products; some of them were intended for use in construction or as lids for the sarcophagi.

However, it is not always feasible to apply a range of different methods over a particular site or landscape due to constraints in time or funding. This paper addresses the integrated application of three geophysical survey methods over an important archaeological site located in south Italy. In particular, it is focused on the results achieved from a past geophysical survey and the ongoing excavations performed by archaeologists in the site of Muro Leccese. Muro Leccese (Lecce) is one of the most important Messapian archaeological sites in southern Italy. The archaeological interest of the site was generated since the discovery of the remains of Messapian walls (late 4th–3rd centuries BC). With the aim of widening the archaeological knowledge of the Messapian settlement, several integrated meth...

Geology, so far, has not been considered in all its aspects in architectural heritage: i.e. geography, geomorphology, quarries provenance, building stones, and their relationship with historical and architectural aspects, constructive techniques and technological developments, as well as the connection of heritage structures to the settlement of historical routes. For this purpose, two scientific teams have gathered to develop two of this kind of routes following a common methodology, based on different geographical context, geological settlement, history, structure tipology and building stones.

This paper presents the project “Marta Racconta. The main purpose of this project is to make ‘accessible’ ancient monuments from the Greek Taras (the ancient Taranto) currently inaccessible to visitors. These are: the Tomb of the Athlete of Taranto, Tomb of the Festoons, and the Hypogeum of the Gorgons, was discovered some years ago in Via Otranto. From a technological point of view, we have developed a Real Time 3D platform for a stereoscopic immersive visit, in which a navigation system with ‘natural interface’ was implemented, where the commands are executed with simple hand gestures. Through this technology, the visitor will have the opportunity to follow a path of integrated knowledge starting from heterogeneous contents, which will allow the access to historical and archaeological data, the archaeometric analyses and the spatial navigation within a hyperrealistic environment where it will be possible to interact with the three-dimensional structures, to query the Database and to explore, interactively, the funerary finds.

The results highlighted dissimilar composition of the residues for containers different in shape and provenance. Lipids, vegetable resins, and proteinaceous compound were identified. Also some inorganic products (calcite and clay minerals) were found as intended ingredients of the cosmetic preparation.
