A colossal mosque, recently built by the current Islamic conservative government, now threatening... more A colossal mosque, recently built by the current Islamic conservative government, now threateningly looms over Taksim Square where the memories of the Gezi Park protests silently mingle with the spirits of the Armenian cemetery lying beneath. The recent transformation of Istanbul's historically most contested urban space, once recognized as Christian Pera, symbolically and also very intensely mirrors the latest backlash unleashed by 'Islamopolis' against the Ottoman cosmopolitanism and Turkish secularism, which are respectively framed as 'urban affects' in this article. Viewing the recent affective impact of Islamopolis as a scholarly invitation, I intend to revisit the urban origins of Istanbul's Occupy encampment through the lenses of intersectional methodologies approaches and bourgeoning affect literature in urban studies.

The immense global surge in the anti-gender discourse, driven by right-wing populism and appealin... more The immense global surge in the anti-gender discourse, driven by right-wing populism and appealing to hegemonic masculinity, appears to be a calculated strategy aimed at consolidating conservative support during times of economic and political uncertainties. Various conservative governments readily exhibit tendencies to implement this globally shared anti-gender rhetoric through various forms of public policy, such as legislative regulations that restrict abortion rights, limit access to medical services for sex reassignment producers or by imposing ban on pride marches in public spaces. The worrisome assault undertaken by heteronormativity through the state apparatus may be considered a reflection of the crises surrounding the protective welfare state, the socalled efficient neoliberal economy and masculinity itself. In this article, however, I present an ethnographic perspective to argue otherwise; that the anti-gender backlash unleashed by the current neoliberal Islamic regime in Turkey emerges as a defensive response to the Istanbul's occupy movement commonly known as the Gezi events.

These two problematics, one theoretical, and one ethnographic, are drawn together through Edith Turner's conceptualization of communitas in light of the fieldwork findings derived from the encampment established at Istanbul's Gezi Park in 2013.

This paper presents a deeper first-hand understanding of the post-2010 collective action forms by... more This paper presents a deeper first-hand understanding of the post-2010 collective action forms by proposing "repertoire" as an analytical tool. In doing so, it primarily aims to bring a critical perspective on normative and culture-focused approaches to the 21 st-century activism that tend to take various aspects of mobilization processes for granted. By questioning how participants "remember" their movements from a critical insider point of view and relying on an ethnographic analysis of Istanbul's Gezi Park protests of 2013, this paper also sheds light on the ways in which the protest repertoires are adopted and performed in demonstrations spaces wherein they are first applied as well.

The Turkish Cultural Revolution has been a steady of debate and controversy for scholars coming f... more The Turkish Cultural Revolution has been a steady of debate and controversy for scholars coming from different disciplines of social science since the founding elites attempted to build the new secular society upon a disintegrating cosmopolitan empire in 1923. One of the off shoots of this modernization project championed by a group of elite soldiers under the leadership of Atatürk was the so-called Turkish music revolution. In this paper, I am defining the imagination of a nation and its cultural modular forms in an underdeveloped oriental milieu as that of Turkey as daydreaming because I would argue that the so-called music revolution of this total cultural fabrication throughout the 1930s, 1940s resulted in confusion, feelings of anxiety, artistic and cultural volatility, and, thereby, paved the way for an opportunity to navigate in a space between the Occident and the Orient spatio-temporality in parallel to ethno-racist discourses.

Atatürk liderliği altındaki bir gurup elit asker grubu önderliğinde yürüyen bu modernleşme projesinin bir alt uzantısı Türk müzik devrimi olarak da bilinir. Bu makalede, Türkiye'nin ki gibi geç, az gelişmiş şarklı bir alan içinde zuhur eden bir ulusun ve onun kültürel formlarının tahayyülünü gündüşü olarak tanımlıyorum çünkü 1930'lar ve 1940'lar boyunca zuhur eden bu topyekûn kültürel dizaynın müzik devrimi etno-ırkçı söylemlere paralel olarak kafa karışıklığı, endişe hisleri, sanatsal ve kültürel uçuculuk ile sonuçlanmıştır ve nihayetinde Garp ve Şark zamansal-alansallığı arasında bir seyrinin önünü açmıştır.

TÜRK&OSMANLI MÜZİĞİNDE MODERNLEŞME VE 1930’lu 1940’lı yıllar: Türk Müzik Devriminde Garbiyatçı ve... more TÜRK&OSMANLI MÜZİĞİNDE MODERNLEŞME VE 1930’lu 1940’lı yıllar: Türk Müzik Devriminde Garbiyatçı ve Modernleşmeci Endişeler. Bu araştırmanın asıl ve öz amacı 1930’lar ve 1940’lardaki erken cumhuriyet döneminde ortaya çıkan sosyo-politik ve kültürel dinamikleri ve oluşumları irdelemektir. “Modernleşmeci” ve “Garbiyatçı” endişeler sonucu ortaya çıkan bu discurlar bu çalışmanın en temel dayanağıdır. Bu tez genel sonuç ve giriş bölümü dahil 5 bölümden oluşmuştur. Çalışmanın giriş bölümünde, erken cumhuriyet dönemine geniş bir yelpazeden yaklaşan bilginin yanı sıra, Osmanlı&Türk müziğinin, geç Osmanlı döneminden Kemalist ulus inşa sürecine kadar uzanan bir bilgisel dönem verilmiştir. Through interviews and focus group discussions held with the participation of PhD and post-doctoral researchers, it aims to make the precarity experienced by early career researchers visible. The project's purpose is to understand how early career researchers both take part in and be affected by the current academic system that produces abuse, harassment and exploitation.

When the momentum unleashed by the Istanbul protests of 2013 began to preoccupy Turkish academic ... more When the momentum unleashed by the Istanbul protests of 2013 began to preoccupy Turkish academic circles and experts on hte Middle East, many framed it as yet another iteration of the Arab Srping wave and accordingly labeled it the "Turkish Summer." In subsequent years, however, it has become ethnographically diffulcult to decide on the conditions of the similitary between the Arab Spring and the "Turkish Summer." In this chapter, I intend to present activist-based ethnographic findings that verify the offerings of the radical school of thought.
