Bilal Orfali, Ph.D. (2009), Yale University, is Sheikh Zayed Chair for Arabic and Islamic Studies and Chairperson of the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut. He previously held the M.S. Sofia Chair in Arabic Studies at the Ohio State University. He specializes in Arabic literature, Sufism, and Qurʾānic Studies. He co-edits al-Abhath Journal and Brill’s series Texts and Studies on the Qur’an. He is the author and editor of more than a twenty books on Arabic Studies. مختارات من الهوامل والشوامل: أبو حيّان التوحيدي يسأل وأبو عليّ مسكويه يجيب
كيف يمكن أن نتفاعل مع قصص كُتبت قبل ألف عام؟ كيف يمكن إعادة صياغة الأسئلة الجماليّة والأدائيّة في النصوص الأدبية بصريًّا؟ وهذا تحديدا هو ما نقدّمه في كتاب "لِمَ اشتدّ عشق الإنسان لهذا العالم؟".
يتميّز كتاب الهوامل والشوامل بأنّ له مؤلّفَين، أديب يسأل وفيلسوف مؤرّخ يجيب. يسجّل الكتاب مجموعةً واسعة من أسئلة تطال جوانب فلسفيّة وعَقَديّة ولغويّة وعلميّة وجّهها الأديب أبو حيّان التوحيديّ (تـ 414/1023) إلى الفيلسوف والمؤرّخ أبي عليّ مسكويه (تـ 412/1030). وكلاهما يُعدّ من أبرز المساهمين في ازدهار الحياة الثقافيّة والفكريّة التي عرفها العالم الإسلاميّ خلال فترة الحكم البويهيّ في القرن الرابع للهجرة/العاشر للميلاد. وتشكلّ هذه المراسلات بين التوحيديّ ومسكويه مرآةً لسجالات ذلك العصر واهتماماته، وتعكس روح التفكّر العقلانيّ التي وسمت حركته. ولكن كيف ننظر اليوم إلى هذا السجالات وكيف نقرؤها؟ أنجدها تعليميّة أم مفيدة أم مسلّية أم مضحكة أم محيّرة؟ هل تغيّرت أسئلتنا واهتماماتنا؟

صدر عن الدار العربية للعلوم ناشرين كتاب فنّ الاختيار الأدبيّ: أبو منصور الثعالبيّ وكتابه يتيمة الدهر لبلال الأرفه لي أستاذ الدراسات العربية والإسلامية في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت. كان الكتاب قد صدر قبل ذلك عن دار بريل-ليدن 2016، ويصدر الآن بهذه النشرة للقارئ العربيّ وبترجمة لينا الجمّال. يدرس الأرفه لي في كتابه كتابَين من كتب الاختيارات الأدبيّة الكلاسيكيّة هما: يتيمة الدهر وتتمّة اليتيمة لصاحبهما أبي منصور عبد الملك بن محمّد بن إسماعيل الثعالبيّ (٣٥٠-٤٢٩هـ/ ٩٦١-١٠٣٩م). وهو الأديب والناقد والشاعر والمؤرّخ الأدبيّ الذي وُلد وأمضى حياته في مدينة نيسابور.
مؤلِّف سَلوة العارفين هو أبو خلف محمّد بن عبد الملك الشافعيّ السلميّ الطبريّ، وهو فقيه شافعيّ ومؤلِّف في الفقه والتصوُّف. عاش في نيسابور عاصمة إقليم خراسان ومركزها الثقافي، ووضع هذا الكتاب بطلبٍ من أبي عليّ حسّان بن سعيد المنيعيّ (ت ٤٦٣/١٠٧١) الذي كان رئيسًا للفتوّة الصوفيةّ في نيسابور وراعيًا لعلمائها .
حقّق جرهارد بورينغ وبلال الأرفه لي الكتاب عن مخطوط فريد محفوظ في دار الكتب المصريّة في القاهرة ضمن مجموعة طلعت باشا.
يبدأ كتاب سَلوة العارفين وأُنس المشتاقين بمقدّمة قصيرة من وضع الطبريّ ثمّ ينقسم في اثنين وسبعين بابًا تتحرّك بين معاني التصوّف وطرقه وأحواله. ويتألّف النصّ المحقَّق من ٤٤٥ صفحة، بالإضافة إلى فهارس الآيات، ومتون الحديث، والأعلام، والأماكن، والأشعار، والاصطلاحات.
دعمت الأكاديميّة العربيّة الألمانيّة للشباب في العلوم والعلوم الإنسانيّة (AGYA) تحرير هذا الكتاب ونشره، وحظي الكتاب أيضًا بمنحةٍ من قبل الوزارة الألمانيّة الاتّحاديّة للتعليم والبحث (BMBF).
هذا الكتاب هو الرابع ضمن سلسلة المكتبة العربية للناشئة الصادرة عن جامعة نيويورك أبو ظبي. اختار نصوص الكتاب بلال الأرفه لي أستاذ كرسي الشيخ زايد للدراسات العربية والإسلامية في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، وإيناس خنسه أستاذة الأدب العربي في الجامعة عينها. ورافق الرسّام محمود الداود النصوص برسومات تأويليّة تجريدية وتصويرية.

وضع الأديب أبو سعد نصر بن يعقوب الدينوريّ (ت بعد 400/1010) كتاب القادريّ في التعبير للخليفة القادر بالله (حكم 381/991–422/1031). وقد لقي الكتاب انتشارًا واسعًا، وتميّز بجمعه بين الثقافة الإسلاميّة وثقافات أخرى يونانيّة وهنديّة وفارسيّة. يختار الأرفه لي والجمّال مجموعةً من المنامات بالعودة إلى ثلاث مخطوطات لـ القادريّ، ويعيدان تنسيقها ضمن عشرة أبواب يحمل كلٌّ منها ثيمةً بارزة في كتب التعبير: السلطة (منام المَلِك أو الخليفة)؛ الجندر (بين منامه ومنامها)؛ الاستلهام (المنام والشعر)؛ علاقة الرؤية بالرؤيا (المنام والعمى)؛ الاستشفاء (المنام والمرض)؛ نقل المعرفة (المنام وعلم التعبير)؛ الحضارة المادّيّة (المنام والعمارة)؛ الكشف (المنام والفضيحة)؛ الإثارة البصريّة (منامات ملوّنة)؛ الموت (المنام يُنبئ بالأجل).

The tradition of illustration has been a pivotal aspect of Arabic manuscripts since the 6th/12th century, extending its influence beyond scientific domains such as medicine, astronomy, and geography. Its presence is profoundly felt in literary works, including folktales, mirrors for princes, and maqāmāt, showcasing its inherent artistic and aesthetic value. In this vein, a book titled "Innī ra’aytu fī al-manām: Manāmāt mukhtāra min kitāb al-Qādirī fī al-taʿbīr" (I Saw in My Dream: Selected Dreams from al-Qādirī’s Book on Interpretation), curated by Bilal Orfali and Lina Jammal, offers a unique blend of dream interpretations from al-Qādirī fī al-taʿbīr, one of the most comprehensive Arabic works on the subject. This collection is enhanced by the captivating illustrations of Mahmoud Al-Dawood, which are either directly based on specific dreams or inspired by the thematic essence of the dreams.
The author, Abū Saʿd Naṣr ibn Yaʿqūb al-Dīnawarī (who passed away after 400/1010), wrote al-Qādirī fī al-taʿbīr under the patronage of Caliph Al-Qādir Bi-Allāh (who reigned from 381/991 to 422/1031), producing a work celebrated for its integration of Islamic culture with elements from Greek, Indian, and Persian traditions. Orfali and Jammal have meticulously selected dreams from three manuscripts of al-Qādirī, organizing them into ten thematic chapters that cover a broad spectrum of dream interpretation aspects, including authority, gender, inspiration, the interplay between vision and dream, healing, the transmission of knowledge, material civilization, revelation, visual excitement, and death.
"Innī ra’aytu fī al-manām..." aims to recontextualize Arabic heritage for modern audiences by merging the art of curation with the art of illustration. This endeavor is brought to life by the publication efforts of al-Dār Al-ʿArabiyya lil-ʿUlūm-Nāshirūn, supported by a generous grant from the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA), marking a significant contribution to the preservation and revitalization of Arabic cultural legacy through contemporary lenses.
For forty years, Abdulrahim Abu-Husayn’s work at the American University of Beirut revised how we understand the relations of power between the Ottoman center and its Arab peripheries. His ambitious research brought material from the imperial archives into conversation with local chronicles to shed light on the past while simultaneously challenging its misplaced mythologies. However, despite his imposing professions credentials, Abu-Husayn was just as renowned for his sparkling charm and magnanimous personality, which made “the Sultan” beloved by those who know him.
In the Steps of the Sultan seeks to pay tribute to both Abu-Husayn the historian and Abed the man. Chapters by colleagues, friends, and former protégées offer new perspectives on themes that intersect with Abu-Husayn’s own varied interests, ranging from Lebanese histography to views from Istanbul, from Syrian provincial political to the Syriac heritage of Qatar, and from conceptualizations of the caliphate to depictions of divine beauty.
"خواتيم النصوص في الأدب العربيّ"
صدر مؤخّرًا العدد الواحد والسبعون من مجلّة الأبحاث، مجلّة كلّيّة الآداب والعلوم في الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت، وهو عددٌ مزدوجٌ خاصّ بدراسة الخواتيم في التراث الأدبيّ العربيّ، المكتوب والشفويّ على السواء. ويشتمل العدد على الأوراق البحثيّة التي قُدّمت في مؤتمر عُقد في شهر حزيران سنة 2021 حول هذا الموضوع. جمع المؤتمر اثنين وعشرين مشاركًا في لقاءٍ افتراضيّ (بسبب تداعيات الجائحة)، نظّمه كلٌّ من بلال الأرفه لي ولاله بهزادي، برعاية جامعة بامبرغ والجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت. استغرق المؤتمر ثلاثة أيّام، وعُرضت فيه أبحاثٌ قيّمة تعمّقت في مقاربة الختام في عددٍ من الأنواع الأدبيّة العربيّة، واختير منها عشرة أبحاث لتُنشر في هذا العدد الخاصّ.
يُذكر أنّ بعض الدراسات الضيّقة كانت قد وُضعت سابقًا في خواتيم القصائد العربيّة، مثل خاتمة القصيدة في القرن الرابع الهجريّ في العراق والشام لعبد الرحمن بن صالح الخميس (2014)، وخاتمة القصيدة الأندلسيّة في عصر الطوائف لياسر البيّاتي (2016)، ولكن لم يُفرَد أيٌّ من المؤلّفات – بالعربيّة أو بغيرها – لدراسة الخواتيم في الأدب العربيّ بمختلف أجناسه. وهنا تكمن أهمّيّة هذا المجلّد من مجلّة الأبحاث، فهو يجمع مقالاتٍ بالعربيّة والإنجليزيّة تدرس جوانب وخصائص مختلفة للخواتيم والنهايات في الأدب العربيّ-الإسلاميّ، وذلك في القصائد والرسائل والحكايات الخرافيّة والروايات والمخطوطات والموسوعات الأدبيّة وكتب الاختيار والأخبار التاريخيّة.
يقدّم للعدد أستاذ الأدب في جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي، موريس بومرنتز، ممهِّدًا الطريق أمام مقاربات متشعّبة. ومن هذه المقاربات توصيف النقّاد العرب القدامى لخواتيم القصائد "القبيحة"؛ وانفتاح النهايات في كليلة ودمنة وأثره في انتقال هذا التراث الحكائيّ القديم بين الحضارات؛ وأختام النسّاخ آخر المخطوطات وإضاءتها على السياقات الاجتماعيّة والسياسيّة للعصر؛ وتغييب الختام في أدب المدينة الفاسدة لفتح نافذة أمل؛ وتحقُّق النهاية في بعض الروايات بعد زمن كتابتها؛ واستثمار نهايات الأنماط المعرفيّة السابقة في مناهج الاختيار لانطلاقة جديدة؛ وتقاطُع الأدب والفنّ في التشابه بين تصميم الموسوعات الأدبيّة والبُسُط المملوكيّة؛ والاستراتيجيّات السرديّة لصياغة النهايات في الليالي العربيّة؛ والبعد التعليميّ في رسائل إخوان الصفاء؛ وتأثير النهايات العنيفة على تذكّر الأحداث التاريخيّة وتصوّر عواقبها.
ولا ريب أنّ دراسة الخواتيم في الأدب تساهم في إدراك أهمّيّتها والتعرّف إلى أساليب المصنّفين ومناهجهم في صوغها. ومن المؤمَّل أن يكون هذا المجلّد فاتحةً لدراسة الخواتيم في الأدب العربيّ، لتصير جزءًا من الدراسات المقارنة العابرة للآداب والثقافات واللغات.

This work, published by Dar al-Machreq in 2023, presents a critical edition of Kaff al-muʿāriḍ by its author Abdullah bin Mustafa Al-Damluji (d. 1259/1843). The book is a defense of the two renowned Sufi sheikhs after the emergence of intellectual currents that criticized the behavior of some Sufis. The book focuses on rejecting the notions of annihilation and union, defends the concept of sainthood, addresses the issue of excommunication, and warns of its dangers. The accompanying study places the book in its general intellectual context in the eighteenth century, offering a glimpse of Mosul, its intellectual and religious life during the Jalili rule, as well as an overview of the Damluji family and its contributions, including the author who was considered the chief of scholars in Mosul in his time. Although Damaluji's intellectual inclination was rational and literary more than Sufi, it is likely that he wrote this treatise out of zeal for the saints and a desire to write on a topic that preoccupied many scholars of his region in that era. This reveals important political, social, and religious aspects in the history of Iraq in general, and the history of Mosul in the 12th/18th century in particular.
سبق أن نُشر الكتاب مرارًا بطبعات شعبيّة كثيرة الثغرات والأخطاء، منسوبًا خطأً إلى ابن سيرين (ت 110/728). صدر بدايةً عام 1867م عن مطبعة بولاق بعنوان تفسير الأحلام لابن سيرين في هامش كتاب آخر، ومنذ ذلك الحين، تعيد عشرات دور النشر في العالم العربيّ إصدار الكتاب في كلّ عام لا سيّما أنّه يُصنَّف ضمن أكثر الكتب مبيعًا في العالم العربيّ. وتجاوزَ خطأ نسبة الكتاب الجمهورَ العامّ إلى عدد من الباحثين – العرب والمستشرقين – الذين استندوا إلى الكتاب في دراساتهم ونسبوه إلى ابن سيرين على أنّه من تدوين أحد تلامذته. الواقع أنّ ابن سيرين – وهو مُعَبِّر المنامات الأشهر في الحضارة الإسلاميّة – لم يؤلّف قطّ كتابًا في التعبير، ولم يُجمع إرثه في كتاب بعده.
إنّ قراءةً واعية لمتن الكتاب تُظهر مباشرةً نسبته الصحيحة إلى أبي سعد الخركوشيّ، فمقدّمته تعود صراحةً إليه، وعددٌ كبيرٌ من الأبواب يبدأ بذكره: "قال الأستاذ أبو سعد الواعظ رحمه الله". والخركوشيّ هو أوّل متصوّف – على حدّ علمنا – يضع كتابًا في تفسير المنامات، لذلك يُعَدُّ كتاب البشارة والنذارة أساسًا في دراسة أثر الفكر الصوفيّ في علم تعبير الرؤيا، والانزياح الدلاليّ الذي حقّقه في تأويلات بعض الرموز مقارنةً بما نُقل من الحضارات القديمة الأخرى. كلّ ذلك يجعل تحقيق كتاب البشارة والنذارة إنجازًا أكاديميًّا ضخمًا، ويكتب بداية مسار جديد في دراسة المنامات في الأدب العربيّ وموقعها من الآداب العالميّة.
استوفى المحقّقان دراسة ما وصلنا من مخطوطات الكتاب، وعددها يفوق العشر، واعتمدا في التحقيق على ثلاث مخطوطات قيّمة تمثّل المتن الأقدم للكتاب. يقع الكتاب في 59 بابًا تتناول طيفًا واسعًا من التأويلات، ويمكن تصنيفها ضمن ستّة محاور رئيسة: المحور الأوّل (الأبواب 1–21): تأويل رؤيا الله وملائكته ورسله وكتبه والجنّة والنار، وتأويل رؤيا الإسلام وبعض شعائره وعباداته؛ المحور الثاني (الأبواب 22–32): تأويل رؤيا البشر على اختلاف ألوانهم وفئاتهم وأعمارهم وحرفهم، وتأويل أحوالهم المختلفة في الأكل واللبس واللهو والحرب؛ المحور الثالث (الأبواب 33–44): تأويل رؤيا المخلوقات من بهائم ووحوش وطيور وحشرات، وتأويل رؤيا السماء والأرض وما يتّصل بهما؛ المحور الرابع (الأبواب 45–49): تأويل رؤيا الجمادات؛ المحور الخامس (الأبواب 50–58): تأويل رؤيا أعمال وأحوال متفرّقة؛ المحور السادس (الباب 59): رؤيا بعض الصالحين لبعض. ولا ينحصر الكتاب بالمنامات؛ إذ يشتمل على معارف لغويّة وتاريخيّة ودينيّة واجتماعيّة، ويشكّل مخزونًا معرفيًّا ضخمًا ومعجمًا للرموز بما كانت تمثّله في المخيّلة الجماعيّة في القرن الرابع/العاشر.
انطلاقًا ممّا سبق، لا بدّ لنا أن نعود لقراءة النصوص الأدبيّة والتاريخيّة ضمن إطارها الزمنيّ والجغرافيّ، لا أن نسقط على هذه النصوص وقائع سياسيّة من الأزمان اللاحقة. وفيما يركّز أغلب الدراسات الحديثة على العلاقات العثمانيّة العربيّة في مصر وسوريا، فإنّ أهميّة النصّ الذي ننشره في هذا الكتاب أنّه لأحد أبرز وجوه الجزيرة العربيّة الثقافيّة في القرن السادس عشر الميلاديّ. فهو أحد علماء مكّة، وهي إذ ذاك ليست تحت السيطرة العثمانيّة، يكتب تاريخًا للدولة العثمانيّة وترجمة لمعاصره من سلاطينها بايزيد الثاني (حكم 886–918/1481–1512). لسنا هنا بصدد تقييم العمل من جهة إضافته للمعرفة التاريخيّة، ولكن من جهة أنّه انعكاس لصورة العثمانيّين والترك وما يربطهم بالعرب من وجهة نظر المؤلّف. وفي ضوء ذلك يمكن اعتبار هذا العمل وثيقة تاريخيّة هامّة.
يأتي الكتاب في ٤٠٠ صفحة، ويتوزّع في خمسة فصول. يقدّم الفصل الأوّل لموضوعة "فنّ الاختيار،" وكتب الاختيارات الأدبيّة، وأنواعها، وموضوعاتها. ويبحث الفصل الثاني في حياة الثعالبي، ومؤلَّفاته، وإرثه الأدبيّ، ويُدقّق في نِسبة ما نُسب إليه من كتب ومخطوطات. ينتقل الفصلان الثالث والرابع إلى صُلب البحث ليبحثا في طبيعة عمل الثعالبيّ في اليتيمة والتتمّة وفي مصادره فيهما. ويأتي الفصل الخامس ليضيء البنية الداخليّة في الكتابَين، فيبحث في طريقة تنظيم الثعالبي لأبوابه ولمادّته ضمن الباب الواحد، كما ينظر في إحالات الثعالبيّ من بابٍ لآخر في الكتاب الواحد، وبين الكتابَين أيضًا.
يؤطِّر الأرفه لي درسَه لموضوع "الاختيار الأدبيّ" بمجموعة من الأسئلة تبحث في طبيعة عمل الثعالبي كمؤلّفٍ لكتب الاختيارات الأدبيّة. ويبحث في هذا السياق في علاقات الثعالبي الاجتماعية والأدبية مع معاصريه من أدباء وشعراء، وهذا من جهة. ويبحث من جهة ثانية في العلاقة التأصيلية بين كتب الاختيارات الأدبية ومصادرها الشفوية والمكتوبة. وينظر الأرفه لي، في ظلّ التساؤلين الأخيرين، في موضوع الأهميّة الأدبية والتاريخية لكتابَي اليتيمة والتتمّة. فيقدّم كتابه بنقده لأطروحات بعض الباحثين ممّن يقول بثانوية كتب الاختيارات مقابل المؤلّفات "الأصيلة." ويعرض، من خلال درسه لطبيعة عمل الثعالبي وأسلوبه وأسبابه في الاختيار الأدبيّ، لأجنداته وغاياته الأدبية والسياسية، وكذلك لأثره في جمع أشعار معاصريه من الشعراء والأدباء ممّن لم يتمتّعوا بشهرة واسعة، ولم يصلنا عن بعضهم إلّا ما نقله الثعالبيّ في مؤلّفاته.
يُفيد الكتاب دارسي الأدب العربيّ على المستوى النصّيّ من قبيل النظر في بُنى الكتب الأدبية الكلاسيكية، كما يُفيد المهتمّين بفهم مجتمع الأدباء في مشرق العالم الإسلامي في القرنين الرابع والخامس الهجريّين. ويهمّ الكتاب الباحثين في ثنائية السلطة السياسية والأدب، وفي أثر السلطة السياسية في المجتمع الأدبيّ، وأثر الأولى في خيارات الأديب الأدبية والاجتماعية والجغرافية.
إنّ المهتمّ بالثعالبيّ ومصنّفاته سيتوقّف مليًّا عند علمينِ ارتبطا به في الحقل الأكاديميّ وهما. فالأخيران حقّقا سابقًا كتابين للثعالبيّ: كتاب زاد سفر الملوك: في السفر ومدحه وذمّه ومحاسن الأخلاق فيه وكتاب مكارم الأخلاق ومحاسن الآداب وبدائع الأوصاف وغرائب التشبيهات، فضلًا عن دراسات عديدة للدكتور الأرفه لي حول الثعالبي، حياته وكتبه.
يُنشر الباحثان ولأوّل مرة كتاب خاصّ الخاصّ في الأمثال للثعالبي بعد تحقيقه عن مخطوطةٍ فريدة في مجموعة آيا صوفيا. والكتاب مختلف عن كتاب الثعالبيّ المعنون خاصّ الخاصّ الذي كان قد حُقّق ونشر مرارًا. يقع الكتاب في ثلاثة أقسامٍ مبوّبة حسب الموضوعات، ويختار الثعالبيّ لكلّ قسمٍ طريقةً خاصّةً في عرض المادّة، مبتعدًا بذلك عن النسق المعجميّ الذي عُرفت به كتب الأمثال. وقد جعل القسم الأوّل فيما يُتمثّل به من ألفاظ القرآن وما جاء في معانيها من الخبر وأمثال العرب والعجم وما يقاربها من ألفاظ الخاصّة والعامّة. ويجمع الثعالبي في القسم الثاني أمثال طبقات الناس وذوي المراتب المتباينة والصناعات المختلفة. ويعتمد التدرّج الطبقيّ بدءًا بالأمثال السلطانيّة والملوكيّة، انتقالًا إلى الأمثال المعنيّة بالوزراء والكتّاب والبلغاء، وانتهاءً بأمثال النساء فالصبيان فالعبيد. أمّا في القسم الثالث فيجمع الثعالبي مختارات من الأمثال التي جاءت على أفعل من كذا، ولم يتضمّنها كتاب أبي عبدالله حمزة بن الحسن الأصبهانيّ.
كتاب البشارة والنذارة في تعبير الرؤيا للواعظ المتصوّف أبي سعد عبد الملك بن محمّد الخركوشيّ (ت 407/1016) هو كتابٌ في تفسير المنامات سبق أن نشرت نصَّه عشراتُ دور النشر في العالم العربيّ ولكن باسم ابن سيرين (ت 110/728)، معبّرِ المنامات الأشهر في الحضارة الإسلاميّة. يدرس المحقّقان في هذه النشرة جانبًا من التاريخ النصّيّ لـ البشارة والنذارة، ويقدّمان أوّل تحقيق علميّ للكتاب بنسبته الصحيحة بالاستناد إلى ثلاثٍ من أبرز مخطوطاته. والخركوشيّ هو أوّل متصوِّفٌ يصنّف كتابًا في تعبير الرؤيا، وبذلك يُتيح هذا الكتاب تتبُّعَ آثار التصوّف الأولى في علم تعبير الرؤيا الإسلاميّ. كما يُساهم في فهمٍ مغاير – وربّما أعمق أو أصوب – للنصوص الأدبيّة في عصره لأنّه أشبه بمعجم لرمزيّة الأشياء المحسوسة والمجرّدة بما كانت تمثّله في المخيّلة الجماعيّة في القرن الرابع/العاشر.
بلال الأرفه لي
أستاذ كرسيّ الشيخ زايد للدراسات العربيّة والإسلاميّة في الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت. أكمل دراساته العليا في جامعة يال الأميركيّة في قسم لغات الشرق الأدنى وحضاراته، وحصل على شهادة الدكتوراه عام 2009. هو عضوٌ في هيئات تحريريّة واستشاريّة لعددٍ من المجلّات وسلاسل الكتب والمشاريع الأكاديميّة، ويرأس – بالشراكة – رئاسةَ تحرير مجلّتيِ الأبحاث والمركز. وفي رصيده عشرات الكتب والمقالات المحكّمة بالعربيّة والإنكليزيّة.
لينا الجمّال
باحثة وأكاديميّة، حصلت على شهادة الدكتوراه عام 2020 من دائرة اللغة العربيّة ولغات الشرق الأدنى في الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت. تخصّصت في الأدب العربيّ القديم ونشرت عددًا من دراساتها في مجلّات محكّمة، كما نقلت عددًا من الكتب الأكاديميّة إلى العربيّة. من اهتماماتها البحثيّة: دراسة الحضارة المادّيّة والمرئيّة في الأدب العربيّ، ومعالجة المنامات في سياقاتها المختلفة، وشبك نصوص التراث بغيرها من المعارف.
كتاب الأنوار البهيّة في تعريف مقامات فصحاء البريّة كتاب في الأدب منسوب إلى الأديب ومؤرِّخ الأدب الشهير أبي منصور الثعالبيّ، يشتمل على مقدّمة وأربعة أبواب. الأبواب الثلاثة الأولى موضوعها العلم: يبحث الباب الأوّل في فضيلة العلم والعمل به، ويتطرّق الباب الثاني إلى البيان عن حدّ العلم وحقيقته، ويعرِّج الباب الثالث على بعض شرائط العلم. وأمّا الباب الرابع، الذي يكوِّن القسم الأكبر من الكتاب، فيُعنى بالمناسبات التي ألقى فيها العلماء والحكماء الخُطب بين يدَي الحكّام. وهو ينقسم إلى جزأين، يشتمل أوّلهما على الخُطب الجاهليّة وعلى شذرات من التراث العربيّ واليونانيّ والبيزنطيّ والفارسيّ والهنديّ، في حين يتضمّن الجزء الثاني المادّة الإسلاميّة.
The articles in this volume do not have an eye so much on defining what mysticism and ethics in Islamic civilization are per se, as much as on coming to terms with the parameters and boundaries within which they have historically been conceptualized. As such, the book falls into four clearly demarcated time periods and foci: early, classical, late pre-modern, and modern and contemporary. Taken as a whole, this collection of contributions by leading specialists in their fields offer rich insights into some of the most important Sufi ethical ideas and expressions which have animated the tradition from past to present in such geographically diverse regions and countries as Egypt, India, West Africa, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Central Asia, and China.

كيف يمكن أن نتفاعل مع قصص كُتبت قبل ألف عام؟ كيف يمكن إعادة صياغة الأسئلة الجماليّة والأدائيّة في النصوص الأدبية بصريًّا؟ وهذا تحديدا هو ما نقدّمه في كتاب "لِمَ اشتدّ عشق الإنسان لهذا العالم؟".
يتميّز كتاب الهوامل والشوامل بأنّ له مؤلّفَين، أديب يسأل وفيلسوف مؤرّخ يجيب. يسجّل الكتاب مجموعةً واسعة من أسئلة تطال جوانب فلسفيّة وعَقَديّة ولغويّة وعلميّة وجّهها الأديب أبو حيّان التوحيديّ (تـ 414/1023) إلى الفيلسوف والمؤرّخ أبي عليّ مسكويه (تـ 412/1030). وكلاهما يُعدّ من أبرز المساهمين في ازدهار الحياة الثقافيّة والفكريّة التي عرفها العالم الإسلاميّ خلال فترة الحكم البويهيّ في القرن الرابع للهجرة/العاشر للميلاد. وتشكلّ هذه المراسلات بين التوحيديّ ومسكويه مرآةً لسجالات ذلك العصر واهتماماته، وتعكس روح التفكّر العقلانيّ التي وسمت حركته. ولكن كيف ننظر اليوم إلى هذا السجالات وكيف نقرؤها؟ أنجدها تعليميّة أم مفيدة أم مسلّية أم مضحكة أم محيّرة؟ هل تغيّرت أسئلتنا واهتماماتنا؟

صدر عن الدار العربية للعلوم ناشرين كتاب فنّ الاختيار الأدبيّ: أبو منصور الثعالبيّ وكتابه يتيمة الدهر لبلال الأرفه لي أستاذ الدراسات العربية والإسلامية في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت. كان الكتاب قد صدر قبل ذلك عن دار بريل-ليدن 2016، ويصدر الآن بهذه النشرة للقارئ العربيّ وبترجمة لينا الجمّال. يدرس الأرفه لي في كتابه كتابَين من كتب الاختيارات الأدبيّة الكلاسيكيّة هما: يتيمة الدهر وتتمّة اليتيمة لصاحبهما أبي منصور عبد الملك بن محمّد بن إسماعيل الثعالبيّ (٣٥٠-٤٢٩هـ/ ٩٦١-١٠٣٩م). وهو الأديب والناقد والشاعر والمؤرّخ الأدبيّ الذي وُلد وأمضى حياته في مدينة نيسابور.
مؤلِّف سَلوة العارفين هو أبو خلف محمّد بن عبد الملك الشافعيّ السلميّ الطبريّ، وهو فقيه شافعيّ ومؤلِّف في الفقه والتصوُّف. عاش في نيسابور عاصمة إقليم خراسان ومركزها الثقافي، ووضع هذا الكتاب بطلبٍ من أبي عليّ حسّان بن سعيد المنيعيّ (ت ٤٦٣/١٠٧١) الذي كان رئيسًا للفتوّة الصوفيةّ في نيسابور وراعيًا لعلمائها .
حقّق جرهارد بورينغ وبلال الأرفه لي الكتاب عن مخطوط فريد محفوظ في دار الكتب المصريّة في القاهرة ضمن مجموعة طلعت باشا.
يبدأ كتاب سَلوة العارفين وأُنس المشتاقين بمقدّمة قصيرة من وضع الطبريّ ثمّ ينقسم في اثنين وسبعين بابًا تتحرّك بين معاني التصوّف وطرقه وأحواله. ويتألّف النصّ المحقَّق من ٤٤٥ صفحة، بالإضافة إلى فهارس الآيات، ومتون الحديث، والأعلام، والأماكن، والأشعار، والاصطلاحات.
دعمت الأكاديميّة العربيّة الألمانيّة للشباب في العلوم والعلوم الإنسانيّة (AGYA) تحرير هذا الكتاب ونشره، وحظي الكتاب أيضًا بمنحةٍ من قبل الوزارة الألمانيّة الاتّحاديّة للتعليم والبحث (BMBF).
هذا الكتاب هو الرابع ضمن سلسلة المكتبة العربية للناشئة الصادرة عن جامعة نيويورك أبو ظبي. اختار نصوص الكتاب بلال الأرفه لي أستاذ كرسي الشيخ زايد للدراسات العربية والإسلامية في الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، وإيناس خنسه أستاذة الأدب العربي في الجامعة عينها. ورافق الرسّام محمود الداود النصوص برسومات تأويليّة تجريدية وتصويرية.
وضع الأديب أبو سعد نصر بن يعقوب الدينوريّ (ت بعد 400/1010) كتاب القادريّ في التعبير للخليفة القادر بالله (حكم 381/991–422/1031). وقد لقي الكتاب انتشارًا واسعًا، وتميّز بجمعه بين الثقافة الإسلاميّة وثقافات أخرى يونانيّة وهنديّة وفارسيّة. يختار الأرفه لي والجمّال مجموعةً من المنامات بالعودة إلى ثلاث مخطوطات لـ القادريّ، ويعيدان تنسيقها ضمن عشرة أبواب يحمل كلٌّ منها ثيمةً بارزة في كتب التعبير: السلطة (منام المَلِك أو الخليفة)؛ الجندر (بين منامه ومنامها)؛ الاستلهام (المنام والشعر)؛ علاقة الرؤية بالرؤيا (المنام والعمى)؛ الاستشفاء (المنام والمرض)؛ نقل المعرفة (المنام وعلم التعبير)؛ الحضارة المادّيّة (المنام والعمارة)؛ الكشف (المنام والفضيحة)؛ الإثارة البصريّة (منامات ملوّنة)؛ الموت (المنام يُنبئ بالأجل).

The tradition of illustration has been a pivotal aspect of Arabic manuscripts since the 6th/12th century, extending its influence beyond scientific domains such as medicine, astronomy, and geography. Its presence is profoundly felt in literary works, including folktales, mirrors for princes, and maqāmāt, showcasing its inherent artistic and aesthetic value. In this vein, a book titled "Innī ra’aytu fī al-manām: Manāmāt mukhtāra min kitāb al-Qādirī fī al-taʿbīr" (I Saw in My Dream: Selected Dreams from al-Qādirī’s Book on Interpretation), curated by Bilal Orfali and Lina Jammal, offers a unique blend of dream interpretations from al-Qādirī fī al-taʿbīr, one of the most comprehensive Arabic works on the subject. This collection is enhanced by the captivating illustrations of Mahmoud Al-Dawood, which are either directly based on specific dreams or inspired by the thematic essence of the dreams.
The author, Abū Saʿd Naṣr ibn Yaʿqūb al-Dīnawarī (who passed away after 400/1010), wrote al-Qādirī fī al-taʿbīr under the patronage of Caliph Al-Qādir Bi-Allāh (who reigned from 381/991 to 422/1031), producing a work celebrated for its integration of Islamic culture with elements from Greek, Indian, and Persian traditions. Orfali and Jammal have meticulously selected dreams from three manuscripts of al-Qādirī, organizing them into ten thematic chapters that cover a broad spectrum of dream interpretation aspects, including authority, gender, inspiration, the interplay between vision and dream, healing, the transmission of knowledge, material civilization, revelation, visual excitement, and death.
"Innī ra’aytu fī al-manām..." aims to recontextualize Arabic heritage for modern audiences by merging the art of curation with the art of illustration. This endeavor is brought to life by the publication efforts of al-Dār Al-ʿArabiyya lil-ʿUlūm-Nāshirūn, supported by a generous grant from the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA), marking a significant contribution to the preservation and revitalization of Arabic cultural legacy through contemporary lenses.
For forty years, Abdulrahim Abu-Husayn’s work at the American University of Beirut revised how we understand the relations of power between the Ottoman center and its Arab peripheries. His ambitious research brought material from the imperial archives into conversation with local chronicles to shed light on the past while simultaneously challenging its misplaced mythologies. However, despite his imposing professions credentials, Abu-Husayn was just as renowned for his sparkling charm and magnanimous personality, which made “the Sultan” beloved by those who know him.
In the Steps of the Sultan seeks to pay tribute to both Abu-Husayn the historian and Abed the man. "خواتيم النصوص في الأدب العربيّ"
صدر مؤخّرًا العدد الواحد والسبعون من مجلّة الأبحاث، مجلّة كلّيّة الآداب والعلوم في الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت، وهو عددٌ مزدوجٌ خاصّ بدراسة الخواتيم في التراث الأدبيّ العربيّ، المكتوب والشفويّ على السواء. ويشتمل العدد على الأوراق البحثيّة التي قُدّمت في مؤتمر عُقد في شهر حزيران سنة 2021 حول هذا الموضوع. جمع المؤتمر اثنين وعشرين مشاركًا في لقاءٍ افتراضيّ (بسبب تداعيات الجائحة)، نظّمه كلٌّ من بلال الأرفه لي ولاله بهزادي، برعاية جامعة بامبرغ والجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت. استغرق المؤتمر ثلاثة أيّام، وعُرضت فيه أبحاثٌ قيّمة تعمّقت في مقاربة الختام في عددٍ من الأنواع الأدبيّة العربيّة، واختير منها عشرة أبحاث لتُنشر في هذا العدد الخاصّ.
يُذكر أنّ بعض الدراسات الضيّقة كانت قد وُضعت سابقًا في خواتيم القصائد العربيّة، مثل خاتمة القصيدة في القرن الرابع الهجريّ في العراق والشام لعبد الرحمن بن صالح الخميس (2014)، وخاتمة القصيدة الأندلسيّة في عصر الطوائف لياسر البيّاتي (2016)، ولكن لم يُفرَد أيٌّ من المؤلّفات – بالعربيّة أو بغيرها – لدراسة الخواتيم في الأدب العربيّ بمختلف أجناسه. وهنا تكمن أهمّيّة هذا المجلّد من مجلّة الأبحاث، فهو يجمع مقالاتٍ بالعربيّة والإنجليزيّة تدرس جوانب وخصائص مختلفة للخواتيم والنهايات في الأدب العربيّ-الإسلاميّ، وذلك في القصائد والرسائل والحكايات الخرافيّة والروايات والمخطوطات والموسوعات الأدبيّة وكتب الاختيار والأخبار التاريخيّة.
يقدّم للعدد أستاذ الأدب في جامعة نيويورك أبوظبي، موريس بومرنتز، ممهِّدًا الطريق أمام مقاربات متشعّبة. ومن هذه المقاربات توصيف النقّاد العرب القدامى لخواتيم القصائد "القبيحة"؛ وانفتاح النهايات في كليلة ودمنة وأثره في انتقال هذا التراث الحكائيّ القديم بين الحضارات؛ وأختام النسّاخ آخر المخطوطات وإضاءتها على السياقات الاجتماعيّة والسياسيّة للعصر؛ وتغييب الختام في أدب المدينة الفاسدة لفتح نافذة أمل؛ وتحقُّق النهاية في بعض الروايات بعد زمن كتابتها؛ واستثمار نهايات الأنماط المعرفيّة السابقة في مناهج الاختيار لانطلاقة جديدة؛ وتقاطُع الأدب والفنّ في التشابه بين تصميم الموسوعات الأدبيّة والبُسُط المملوكيّة؛ والاستراتيجيّات السرديّة لصياغة النهايات في الليالي العربيّة؛ والبعد التعليميّ في رسائل إخوان الصفاء؛ وتأثير النهايات العنيفة على تذكّر الأحداث التاريخيّة وتصوّر عواقبها.
ولا ريب أنّ دراسة الخواتيم في الأدب تساهم في إدراك أهمّيّتها والتعرّف إلى أساليب المصنّفين ومناهجهم في صوغها. ومن المؤمَّل أن يكون هذا المجلّد فاتحةً لدراسة الخواتيم في الأدب العربيّ، لتصير جزءًا من الدراسات المقارنة العابرة للآداب والثقافات واللغات.

This work, published by Dar al-Machreq in 2023, presents a critical edition of Kaff al-muʿāriḍ by its author Abdullah bin Mustafa Al-Damluji (d. 1259/1843). The book is a defense of the two renowned Sufi sheikhs after the emergence of intellectual currents that criticized the behavior of some Sufis. The book focuses on rejecting the notions of annihilation and union, defends the concept of sainthood, addresses the issue of excommunication, and warns of its dangers. The accompanying study places the book in its general intellectual context in the eighteenth century, offering a glimpse of Mosul, its intellectual and religious life during the Jalili rule, as well as an overview of the Damluji family and its contributions, including the author who was considered the chief of scholars in Mosul in his time. Although Damaluji's intellectual inclination was rational and literary more than Sufi, it is likely that he wrote this treatise out of zeal for the saints and a desire to write on a topic that preoccupied many scholars of his region in that era. This reveals important political, social, and religious aspects in the history of Iraq in general, and the history of Mosul in the 12th/18th century in particular.
سبق أن نُشر الكتاب مرارًا بطبعات شعبيّة كثيرة الثغرات والأخطاء، منسوبًا خطأً إلى ابن سيرين (ت 110/728). صدر بدايةً عام 1867م عن مطبعة بولاق بعنوان تفسير الأحلام لابن سيرين في هامش كتاب آخر، ومنذ ذلك الحين، تعيد عشرات دور النشر في العالم العربيّ إصدار الكتاب في كلّ عام لا سيّما أنّه يُصنَّف ضمن أكثر الكتب مبيعًا في العالم العربيّ. وتجاوزَ خطأ نسبة الكتاب الجمهورَ العامّ إلى عدد من الباحثين – العرب والمستشرقين – الذين استندوا إلى الكتاب في دراساتهم ونسبوه إلى ابن سيرين على أنّه من تدوين أحد تلامذته. الواقع أنّ ابن سيرين – وهو مُعَبِّر المنامات الأشهر في الحضارة الإسلاميّة – لم يؤلّف قطّ كتابًا في التعبير، ولم يُجمع إرثه في كتاب بعده.
إنّ قراءةً واعية لمتن الكتاب تُظهر مباشرةً نسبته الصحيحة إلى أبي سعد الخركوشيّ، فمقدّمته تعود صراحةً إليه، وعددٌ كبيرٌ من الأبواب يبدأ بذكره: "قال الأستاذ أبو سعد الواعظ رحمه الله". والخركوشيّ هو أوّل متصوّف – على حدّ علمنا – يضع كتابًا في تفسير المنامات، لذلك يُعَدُّ كتاب البشارة والنذارة أساسًا في دراسة أثر الفكر الصوفيّ في علم تعبير الرؤيا، والانزياح الدلاليّ الذي حقّقه في تأويلات بعض الرموز مقارنةً بما نُقل من الحضارات القديمة الأخرى. كلّ ذلك يجعل تحقيق كتاب البشارة والنذارة إنجازًا أكاديميًّا ضخمًا، ويكتب بداية مسار جديد في دراسة المنامات في الأدب العربيّ وموقعها من الآداب العالميّة.
استوفى المحقّقان دراسة ما وصلنا من مخطوطات الكتاب، وعددها يفوق العشر، واعتمدا في التحقيق على ثلاث مخطوطات قيّمة تمثّل المتن الأقدم للكتاب. يقع الكتاب في 59 بابًا تتناول طيفًا واسعًا من التأويلات، ويمكن تصنيفها ضمن ستّة محاور رئيسة: المحور الأوّل (الأبواب 1–21): تأويل رؤيا الله وملائكته ورسله وكتبه والجنّة والنار، وتأويل رؤيا الإسلام وبعض شعائره وعباداته؛ المحور الثاني (الأبواب 22–32): تأويل رؤيا البشر على اختلاف ألوانهم وفئاتهم وأعمارهم وحرفهم، وتأويل أحوالهم المختلفة في الأكل واللبس واللهو والحرب؛ المحور الثالث (الأبواب 33–44): تأويل رؤيا المخلوقات من بهائم ووحوش وطيور وحشرات، وتأويل رؤيا السماء والأرض وما يتّصل بهما؛ المحور الرابع (الأبواب 45–49): تأويل رؤيا الجمادات؛ المحور الخامس (الأبواب 50–58): تأويل رؤيا أعمال وأحوال متفرّقة؛ المحور السادس (الباب 59): رؤيا بعض الصالحين لبعض. ولا ينحصر الكتاب بالمنامات؛ إذ يشتمل على معارف لغويّة وتاريخيّة ودينيّة واجتماعيّة، ويشكّل مخزونًا معرفيًّا ضخمًا ومعجمًا للرموز بما كانت تمثّله في المخيّلة الجماعيّة في القرن الرابع/العاشر.
انطلاقًا ممّا سبق، لا بدّ لنا أن نعود لقراءة النصوص الأدبيّة والتاريخيّة ضمن إطارها الزمنيّ والجغرافيّ، لا أن نسقط على هذه النصوص وقائع سياسيّة من الأزمان اللاحقة. وفيما يركّز أغلب الدراسات الحديثة على العلاقات العثمانيّة العربيّة في مصر وسوريا، فإنّ أهميّة النصّ الذي ننشره في هذا الكتاب أنّه لأحد أبرز وجوه الجزيرة العربيّة الثقافيّة في القرن السادس عشر الميلاديّ. فهو أحد علماء مكّة، وهي إذ ذاك ليست تحت السيطرة العثمانيّة، يكتب تاريخًا للدولة العثمانيّة وترجمة لمعاصره من سلاطينها بايزيد الثاني (حكم 886–918/1481–1512). لسنا هنا بصدد تقييم العمل من جهة إضافته للمعرفة التاريخيّة، ولكن من جهة أنّه انعكاس لصورة العثمانيّين والترك وما يربطهم بالعرب من وجهة نظر المؤلّف. وفي ضوء ذلك يمكن اعتبار هذا العمل وثيقة تاريخيّة هامّة.
يأتي الكتاب في ٤٠٠ صفحة، ويتوزّع في خمسة فصول. يقدّم الفصل الأوّل لموضوعة "فنّ الاختيار،" وكتب الاختيارات الأدبيّة، وأنواعها، وموضوعاتها. ويبحث الفصل الثاني في حياة الثعالبي، ومؤلَّفاته، وإرثه الأدبيّ، ويُدقّق في نِسبة ما نُسب إليه من كتب ومخطوطات. ينتقل الفصلان الثالث والرابع إلى صُلب البحث ليبحثا في طبيعة عمل الثعالبيّ في اليتيمة والتتمّة وفي مصادره فيهما. ويأتي الفصل الخامس ليضيء البنية الداخليّة في الكتابَين، فيبحث في طريقة تنظيم الثعالبي لأبوابه ولمادّته ضمن الباب الواحد، كما ينظر في إحالات الثعالبيّ من بابٍ لآخر في الكتاب الواحد، وبين الكتابَين أيضًا.
يؤطِّر الأرفه لي درسَه لموضوع "الاختيار الأدبيّ" بمجموعة من الأسئلة تبحث في طبيعة عمل الثعالبي كمؤلّفٍ لكتب الاختيارات الأدبيّة. ويبحث في هذا السياق في علاقات الثعالبي الاجتماعية والأدبية مع معاصريه من أدباء وشعراء، وهذا من جهة. ويبحث من جهة ثانية في العلاقة التأصيلية بين كتب الاختيارات الأدبية ومصادرها الشفوية والمكتوبة. وينظر الأرفه لي، في ظلّ التساؤلين الأخيرين، في موضوع الأهميّة الأدبية والتاريخية لكتابَي اليتيمة والتتمّة. فيقدّم كتابه بنقده لأطروحات بعض الباحثين ممّن يقول بثانوية كتب الاختيارات مقابل المؤلّفات "الأصيلة." ويعرض، من خلال درسه لطبيعة عمل الثعالبي وأسلوبه وأسبابه في الاختيار الأدبيّ، لأجنداته وغاياته الأدبية والسياسية، وكذلك لأثره في جمع أشعار معاصريه من الشعراء والأدباء ممّن لم يتمتّعوا بشهرة واسعة، ولم يصلنا عن بعضهم إلّا ما نقله الثعالبيّ في مؤلّفاته.
يُفيد الكتاب دارسي الأدب العربيّ على المستوى النصّيّ من قبيل النظر في بُنى الكتب الأدبية الكلاسيكية، كما يُفيد المهتمّين بفهم مجتمع الأدباء في مشرق العالم الإسلامي في القرنين الرابع والخامس الهجريّين. ويهمّ الكتاب الباحثين في ثنائية السلطة السياسية والأدب، وفي أثر السلطة السياسية في المجتمع الأدبيّ، وأثر الأولى في خيارات الأديب الأدبية والاجتماعية والجغرافية.
إنّ المهتمّ بالثعالبيّ ومصنّفاته سيتوقّف مليًّا عند علمينِ ارتبطا به في الحقل الأكاديميّ وهما. فالأخيران حقّقا سابقًا كتابين للثعالبيّ: كتاب زاد سفر الملوك: في السفر ومدحه وذمّه ومحاسن الأخلاق فيه وكتاب مكارم الأخلاق ومحاسن الآداب وبدائع الأوصاف وغرائب التشبيهات، فضلًا عن دراسات عديدة للدكتور الأرفه لي حول الثعالبي، حياته وكتبه.
يُنشر الباحثان ولأوّل مرة كتاب خاصّ الخاصّ في الأمثال للثعالبي بعد تحقيقه عن مخطوطةٍ فريدة في مجموعة آيا صوفيا. والكتاب مختلف عن كتاب الثعالبيّ المعنون خاصّ الخاصّ الذي كان قد حُقّق ونشر مرارًا. يقع الكتاب في ثلاثة أقسامٍ مبوّبة حسب الموضوعات، ويختار الثعالبيّ لكلّ قسمٍ طريقةً خاصّةً في عرض المادّة، مبتعدًا بذلك عن النسق المعجميّ الذي عُرفت به كتب الأمثال. وقد جعل القسم الأوّل فيما يُتمثّل به من ألفاظ القرآن وما جاء في معانيها من الخبر وأمثال العرب والعجم وما يقاربها من ألفاظ الخاصّة والعامّة. ويجمع الثعالبي في القسم الثاني أمثال طبقات الناس وذوي المراتب المتباينة والصناعات المختلفة. ويعتمد التدرّج الطبقيّ بدءًا بالأمثال السلطانيّة والملوكيّة، انتقالًا إلى الأمثال المعنيّة بالوزراء والكتّاب والبلغاء، وانتهاءً بأمثال النساء فالصبيان فالعبيد. أمّا في القسم الثالث فيجمع الثعالبي مختارات من الأمثال التي جاءت على أفعل من كذا، ولم يتضمّنها كتاب أبي عبدالله حمزة بن الحسن الأصبهانيّ.
كتاب البشارة والنذارة في تعبير الرؤيا للواعظ المتصوّف أبي سعد عبد الملك بن محمّد الخركوشيّ (ت 407/1016) هو كتابٌ في تفسير المنامات سبق أن نشرت نصَّه عشراتُ دور النشر في العالم العربيّ ولكن باسم ابن سيرين (ت 110/728)، معبّرِ المنامات الأشهر في الحضارة الإسلاميّة. يدرس المحقّقان في هذه النشرة جانبًا من التاريخ النصّيّ لـ البشارة والنذارة، ويقدّمان أوّل تحقيق علميّ للكتاب بنسبته الصحيحة بالاستناد إلى ثلاثٍ من أبرز مخطوطاته. والخركوشيّ هو أوّل متصوِّفٌ يصنّف كتابًا في تعبير الرؤيا، وبذلك يُتيح هذا الكتاب تتبُّعَ آثار التصوّف الأولى في علم تعبير الرؤيا الإسلاميّ. كما يُساهم في فهمٍ مغاير – وربّما أعمق أو أصوب – للنصوص الأدبيّة في عصره لأنّه أشبه بمعجم لرمزيّة الأشياء المحسوسة والمجرّدة بما كانت تمثّله في المخيّلة الجماعيّة في القرن الرابع/العاشر.

أستاذ كرسيّ الشيخ زايد للدراسات العربيّة والإسلاميّة في الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت. أكمل دراساته العليا في جامعة يال الأميركيّة في قسم لغات الشرق الأدنى وحضاراته، وحصل على شهادة الدكتوراه عام 2009. هو عضوٌ في هيئات تحريريّة واستشاريّة لعددٍ من المجلّات وسلاسل الكتب والمشاريع الأكاديميّة، ويرأس – بالشراكة – رئاسةَ تحرير مجلّتيِ الأبحاث والمركز. وفي رصيده عشرات الكتب والمقالات المحكّمة بالعربيّة والإنكليزيّة.
لينا الجمّال
باحثة وأكاديميّة، حصلت على شهادة الدكتوراه عام 2020 من دائرة اللغة العربيّة ولغات الشرق الأدنى في الجامعة الأميركيّة في بيروت. تخصّصت في الأدب العربيّ القديم ونشرت عددًا من دراساتها في مجلّات محكّمة، كما نقلت عددًا من الكتب الأكاديميّة إلى العربيّة. من اهتماماتها البحثيّة: دراسة الحضارة المادّيّة والمرئيّة في الأدب العربيّ، ومعالجة المنامات في سياقاتها المختلفة، وشبك نصوص التراث بغيرها من المعارف.
كتاب الأنوار البهيّة في تعريف مقامات فصحاء البريّة كتاب في الأدب منسوب إلى الأديب ومؤرِّخ الأدب الشهير أبي منصور الثعالبيّ، يشتمل على مقدّمة وأربعة أبواب. الأبواب الثلاثة الأولى موضوعها العلم: يبحث الباب الأوّل في فضيلة العلم والعمل به، ويتطرّق الباب الثاني إلى البيان عن حدّ العلم وحقيقته، ويعرِّج الباب الثالث على بعض شرائط العلم. وأمّا الباب الرابع، الذي يكوِّن القسم الأكبر من الكتاب، فيُعنى بالمناسبات التي ألقى فيها العلماء والحكماء الخُطب بين يدَي الحكّام. وهو ينقسم إلى جزأين، يشتمل أوّلهما على الخُطب الجاهليّة وعلى شذرات من التراث العربيّ واليونانيّ والبيزنطيّ والفارسيّ والهنديّ، في حين يتضمّن الجزء الثاني المادّة الإسلاميّة.
The articles in this volume do not have an eye so much on defining what mysticism and ethics in Islamic civilization are per se, as much as on coming to terms with the parameters and boundaries within which they have historically been conceptualized. As such, the book falls into four clearly demarcated time periods and foci: early, classical, late pre-modern, and modern and contemporary. Taken as a whole, this collection of contributions by leading specialists in their fields offer rich insights into some of the most important Sufi ethical ideas and expressions which have animated the tradition from past to present in such geographically diverse regions and countries as Egypt, India, West Africa, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Central Asia, and China.

Part 1, Authorship, of the book begins with two studies related to al-Hamadhānī’s authorship. It reviews several theories about al-Hamadhānī’s reliance on earlier forms in the creation of the maqāma, and provide an edited fragment of a lost work by the well-known grammarian Ibn Fāris (d. 395/1005). It also describes the way that al-Hamadhānī’s individual maqāmas came to be included in manuscript collections in the years following his death.
Part 2, Texts, presents the editions of four maqāmas attributed to al-Hamadhānī in the manuscript tradition, that were not included in Muḥammad ʿAbduh’s printing: the Ṭibbiyya, Sharīfiyya, Hamadhāniyya, Khātamiyya, along with a discussion and analysis of their contents in relation to the extant corpus of al-Hamadhānī’s maqāmāt.
Part 3, Contexts, provides studies and translations of key maqāmas of al-Hamadhānī. “Adab and Metamorphosis: The Mawṣiliyya” is an edition, translation, and modern commentary on this maqāma in which Abū l-Fatḥ famously attempts to raise a dead man from the grave. This commentary identifies sources from which al-Hamadhānī may have drawn, affording modern readers further context with which to explore this tale. “What the Qadi Should not Hear: The Shāmiyya” provides the first scholarly edition of this maqāma, which ʿAbduh excised from the 1889 Beirut printing. The study explores how this maqāma draws upon ideas about the limits of proper and improper speech. The last chapter offers a study and edition of a hitherto unknown commentary on the Maqāmāt of al-Hamadhānī that the authors argue may be an example of auto-commentary. The proposed interpretation has profound implications for how the Maqāmāt of al-Hamadhānī were understood by the first generations of readers, including the writers of maqāmas who followed him.

ما معنى الحياة؟ لماذا تكون أحيانًا قاسيةً ومؤلمة؟ ما هي السعادة الحقيقيّة؟ وأين يكمن الرضا الفعليّ؟ أين يقع الكمال؟ وما سبيل الإنسان إلى تحقيق ذاته؟ تشغلنا مثل هذه الأسئلة في مراحل مختلفة من الحياة، لكنّها تكون أكثر إلحاحًا في مرحلة الشباب. تُعَدُّ أسطورة بلوهر وبوذاسف نقاشًا لمجموعةٍ من الأسئلة المهمّة والشخصيّة، وليس من المستغرب أن يكون بطل هذه القصّة أميرًا شابًّا يصارع للعثور على إجابات هذه الأسئلة.

يقدِّم هذا المقال مقامةً غير معروفة منسوبة لبديع الزمان الهمذانيّ (ت ٣٩٨/١٠٠٨). ويبدأ بعرض الدراسات المتعلِّقة بمخطوطات مقامات الهمذانيّ ثمّ يناقش أدلّة حِفْظ نصّ هذه المقامة في مخطوط وحيد في جامعة يال، مكتبة باينكي، مجموعة سالسبري، رقم ٦٣، (Yale University, Beinecke Library, Salisbury, Collection no. 63). وإنّ هذا المخطوط المنسوخ بتاريخ ٦٠٣/١٢٠٦، كان معروفًا من قِبَل الباحثين الأوروبيِّين، فقد كان بحوزة إفيرارد شايدياس (Everard Scheidius) (١٧٤٢-١٧٩٤) وسيلفستر دي ساسي (Silvestre de Sacy) (١٧٧٥-١٨٣٨) وإدوارد آلدريج سالسبري (Edward Eldridge Salsbury) (١٨١٤-١٩٠١). وإنّ المقامة التي حفظها هذا المخطوط تصف حيلةَ طبيب محتال يبيع عقاقيرَ مزيَّفة مُدَّعيًا إعدادها من موادّ طبّيّة (material medica) نادرة. ويقدّم المقال صورة طبق الأصل عن نصّ هذه المقامة مُرفَقًا بترجمة إلى الإنكليزية مزوّدة بهوامش، ثمّ يقدِّم تحليلًا مُفصَّلًا للمقامة من حيث الشكل والموضوع واللغة والأسلوب، وذلك بالمقارنة بينها وبين مقامات الهمذانيّ الأخرى. ويُختتم بفرضيات عدَّة حول موثوقيّة هذا النصّ المفقود.

Abstract: This article presents an edition and study of a new manuscript document, the Amālī in hadith (dictation session) of the prominent theologian and Sufi master ʿAbd al-Karīm al-Qushayrī (376-465/986-1072). Discussing both the text and the history of its transmission between the 11th and the 13th centuries C.E., in a geographical area covering the regions of Khorasan and Great Syria, the authors contribute to the understanding of the connection between Sufism and hadith culture. One of the most contributing factors to the consolidation of Sufism’s role in Medieval Islamic societies was its connection with hadith culture, both in terms of its networks and methods of transmission. The sources currently available – and to a lesser extent the studies produced to date – all attest to the idea that Sufism formed, notwithstanding, a solid binomial with hadith. In this building process, and despite some severe criticism, Sufism emerged as an important agent. Nevertheless, if we want to gain a deeper understanding of this relationship, the edition of new sources remains a pressing desideratum. Accordingly, the present article provides the scholarly community with a new document that may prove to be a significant contribution to the field.

يشتمل هذا البحث على تحقيق لمخطوط الأمالي في الحديث وعلى دراسة له، وهو لشيخ المتصوّفين وإمامهم عبد الكريم القشيري (376-465/986-1072). وهدف البحث إغناء فهمنا ومقاربتنا للعلاقة بين التصوّف وعلم الحديث، وذلك انطلاقًا من دراسة النصّ والسياق التاريخيّ لتداوله بين القرنَين الحادي عشر والثالث عشر الميلاديّين، ضمن بقعةٍ جغرافيّة تضمّ خراسان وبلاد الشام. وإنّ من أبرز العوامل التي كرّست دور التصوّف في المجتمع الإسلاميّ حينها، ارتكازه إلى علم الحديث من جهتي شبكة العلاقات [بين رجاله] وطريقة الإسناد. لكنّ المصادر التي بين أيدينا – وكذلك الدراسات إلى حدٍّ ما – تؤكّد أنّ التصوّف قد شكّل مع الحديث معادلةً ثنائيّة. وفي أثناء تشكّل هذه المعادلة، ورغم الانتقادات اللاذعة التي واجهتها، برز التصوّف عاملًا مهمًّا بحدّ ذاته. ولكن يبقى الكشف عن مصادر جديدة مطلبًا ملحًّا يجيز لنا فهم العلاقة التي تجمع التصوّف بعلم الحديث على نحو أدقّ وأعمق. ويضع مقالنا هذا في متناول الباحثين مادّةً جديدةً قد تكون ذات أهمّيّةٍ بالغة.

المقدّمة
ما هو دور الفقه الإسلامي في الأدب؟ وبطريقة عكسية، ما هو دور الأدب في الفقه الإسلامي؟ ينطلق هذا البحث للإجابة عن هذين السؤالين البالغي الأهمّية_واللذين عادةً ما يظهران في الأوساط التأويلية للفقه والأدب_من خلال الإحالة لأحد أهمّ القصّاص في التاريخ الإسلامي المبكّر. كان أبو عليّ المُحَسِّن التنوخي (ت 384ه/994م) أديبًا وقاضيًا في الوقت نفسه، وقد أدلى بدلوه في مجالَي الأدب والفقه، ولكن بأساليب وطرق غير متوقَّعة. إذ لم تتناول قصصه مثلًا الموضوعات الأدبية في الفقه، ولم تكن قصصًا تمثيلية لوقائع متخيّلة، كما كان الحال مع هاربر لي (Harper Lee) في روايته أن تقتل طائرًا بريئًا (Lee, 1960)، وهي رواية صارت علامةً في الأدب الأميركي الحديث عرضت لشخصيتها البطولية التي تمثّلت (مع تحوّلها إلى موضع شكّ فيما بعد) ببطلها المحامي آتيكوس فيتش (Atticus Fitch) ومعالجته لموضوعات جوهرية من قبيل العدالة العرقية والجنائية (Lee, 2015). ولكنّ قصص التنوخي اهتمّت بعرض موضوعات دنيويّة ذات جذور قانونية بصيغة أدبية، من قبيل التجّار المشاكسين والمتقاضين الجشعين والغيرة في المحاكم الشرعية والسلطانية. وقدّمت هذه القصص آنذاك دروسًا أخلاقية من زمانها ومحيطها، تمامًا كما يُتوقّع من الأدب الخيالي. وكان الشكل الأدبي الذي استُخدم لنقل الدروس الأخلاقية في العصر الوسيط في بغداد هو السرد، وقد تفوّق التنوخي بعرضه لتلك الدروس في مختاراته الأدبية. ونقلت هذه القصص في الوقت نفسه دروسًا هامّة عن الفقه، أو التصوّر الشائع له آنذاك من خلال نُقول عَرَضية للإجراءات القضائية. ولأنّ استحضاره للإجراءات في المحاكم كان عَرَضيًّا في سياق السرد، تشكّل هذه القصص والتمثيلات مادّة للمؤرّخين يستطيعون توظيفها في استكمال القصص والتقارير المختصرة والتعليمية حول الإجراءات القضائية الواردة في المصادر التقليدية للفقه الإسلامي المبكّر.

ربّما اعتدنا في أيّامنا أن نقرأ الشعر الصوفيّ ثمّ نحاول إسقاطه على حياتنا اليوميّة وتجاربنا "الدنيويّة" في الحبّ. أمّا مع المتصوّفة في الفترة المبكرة فالعكس هو الصحيح. كانت الأناشيد الصوفيّة بالغالب امتدادًا لشعر البلاطات في الغزل والمدح والخمريات. وفي هذا المقال إضاءة على علاقة شعر البلاط المعتمَد (canon) بالصوفيّة المبكرة.

The different presentations explored the overwhelming presence of anthologies in pre-modern Arabic literature, a phenomenon unique to this literature, where you may find anthologies and compilations on any kind of subject or following diverse themes, from love, wine, travel, death to music, difficult words and blaming or praising things. What were the reasons for the popularity of the genre, and what was its function? To what extent can they be considered as original works in themselves, how the author’s influence can be traced in his manner and method of compiling? What can be inferred from the chosen excerpts over what has been left out by an author and most of the time lost to us? What can these compilations say on the historical and cultural context? These questions and many others were raised about this genre, and continue to rise for the readers and scholars today.
The conference was composed by eight panels on the following themes: “Emotions”, “Pleasure”, “Faith and Education”, “This is not a tale”, “Poetry”, “Compilation, Authorship and Readership”, and “Geography”. Each panel was followed by an open question session, allowing the audience to participate and engage with the participants. A keynote speech was given by Professor Ramzi Baalbaki of the American University of Beirut on the second day, and an honorary guest speech by Professor Beatrice Gruendler of the Freie Universität of Berlin on the third day, after which the conference was concluded by a dinner.

“Ahatanhel Krymskyi and Lebanon”
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Ahatanhel Krymskyi, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Lebanese Republic, the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut (AUB), the Sheikh Zayed Chair for Arabic and Islamic Studies at AUB, and the A. Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine have the honour to invite you to an international academic conference “Ahatanhel Krymskyi and Lebanon” that will be held on the first week of June at the American University of Beirut.

Ahatanhel Krymskyi (1871-1942) was a Ukrainian scholar in Middle Eastern studies, a linguist, folklorist, translator, and polyglot, as well as one of the founders of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the pioneer of Near and Middle Eastern studies in Ukraine. In 1896-1898, Krymskyi lived in Lebanon and Syria where he studied the Arabic language and Islam and gathered a rich collection of documents and materials about this region of the Ottoman Empire, its traditions, customs, and life stories. His scholarly and epistolary heritage includes a significant number of works on the history, literature, and culture of Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran; reviews on Abyssinian literature; studies on semitology, history of Islam, and history of Ukrainian literature and language, folklore, and ethnography. He translated from Arabic, Persian, Turkish (Antara, Al-Maarri, Jami, Saadi, Omar Khayyam, Hafez, Ferdowsi, Khalifa Ziya) as well as from European languages into Ukrainian. In 1970, the 16th session of the UNESCO General Assembly added his name to the list of prominent global figures.
His time in Lebanon occupies a special place in Ahatanhel Krymskyi’s biography as it was his first personal encounter with the Arab World. He stayed mainly in Beirut and Shweir, lived in a Lebanese family, actively studied the Arabic language and its colloquial varieties. He worked at manuscript repositories and libraries and wrote for Arabic periodicals and newspapers including the Al-Machriq journal. Krymskyi witnessed the life of Lebanese people in the Ottoman Empire at the end of XIX century, during the Arab Nahda. Indeed, this experience in Lebanon greatly inspired his works, as he went on to write the Beirut cycle of poems titled “Palm tree branches”, and his correspondence with his relatives about life in Lebanon provided a basis for “Beirut Stories” book.
This conference aims to bring to light Ahatanhel Krymskyi’s works as a part of Lebanese history within the context of the Ottoman Empire and the Arab Nahda, and as a common page in Ukrainian-Lebanese relations. Therefore, we are particularly interested in papers that explore the following topics:
• Ahatanhel Krymskyi as a founder of the East-European academic school of Middle East Studies.
• Krymskyi in Lebanon (1896–1898): sites, trips, social environment.
• “Beirut Stories” and “Palm tree branches” by A. Krymskyi.
• Krymskyi as a researcher of Lebanese history, everyday life, and colloquial Arabic at the end of XIX century.
• Krymskyi’s contribution to the Middle East studies: Classical and Modern Arabic Literature, Islam and Sufism, History of Arabic Language, etc.
• Krymskyi’s as a translator of the Arabic and Persian classical literature.
Papers related to Krymskyi’s contribution to other fields of Middle Eastern Studies will be accepted too.

الحكاية الخرافيّة
الحكاية الخرافيّة من الأنواع الأدبيّة التي لم يُنصفها النقد العربيّ قديمًا، إذ كانت قيمتها محصورةً في اشتمالها على الحِكَم والعِبَر والصور البلاغيّة لأغراض محض تعليميّة. أمّا اليوم فقد باتت الحكايات الخرافيّة موضوع عددٍ من الدراسات الأكاديميّة التي تُعنى بنشأتها، وأبعادها، وتجلّياتها، وترجماتها، إلى غير ذلك، مؤكِّدةً ثراء هذه النوع الأدبيّ وانغماسه في السياقات الثقافيّة التي أنتجته.
ويثير استدعاء الحكايات الخرافيّة عددًا من الأسئلة ذات الصلة، منها على سبيل المثال:
- هل للحكايات الخرافيّة مؤلّف واحد/مؤلّفون كثر أم أنّها من المشاع الأدبيّ الذي لا تصحّ نسبته إلى جهة محدّدة؟
- كيف تتحوّل الحكاية الخرافيّة بانتقالها من الوسط الشفهيّ إلى الوسط الكتابيّ؟ فإلى الوسط الفنّيّ تجسيدًا وأداءً؟

Recent scholarship in anthropology and art history has recalled attention to the historical term taṣwīr by contextualizing and theorizing it within moments of overlap between Arab Modernist artistic practice and nation building projects in the 20th Century.
In 1951, the Iraqi artist Jewad Selim (1919-1961) published an essay in which he gives the name taṣwīr or fan al taṣwīr to modern art practice and defines it as a form of speech addressed to the public. . This act of definition can be seen as a reconceptualization of a term with a long history and a shifting conceptual grammar,. and in part instrumentally attached to the cultural project of an Arab yaqza or awakening and the freedom to fashion new images that artists must now shoulder and deploy. But it is also an attempt to manage or structure an uncertainty constitutive not only of that historical moment but also of practices of the image that while initiated by the artist depend upon a viewer for their prospective realization.
In her book titled Fantasmic Objects, anthropologist Kirsten Scheid unfolds taṣwīr over three decades of art making and reception in Lebanon under French mandate and leading up to its first decade as an independent nation state. For Scheid taṣwīr is a temporally laden technology of molding, forming, shaping, and fashioning images by a sociality discursively interdicted from the high values of European art and yet engaged in an aspirational fashioning, or what she calls an imaginal striving – taṣwīr – in a realm of interaction between a nation’s coming into being and becoming meaningful. Boldly articulated, Scheid writes that to engage in taṣwīr is to stop not being aware of ongoing possibilities.
The modern itinerary of taṣwīr and its analytic conceptualization by Scheid work of these two scholars brings to the fore a concept that introduces contingency in artmaking, not by suspending the intentionality of the artist, but by contextualizing its production within historical moments defined by uncertainty. A sura or the fashioned thing is located within a network of making, reception, backward leaning historical scripts and forward leaning ideological striving. The modernist work of art or ṣura, the artist or muṣawwir, the spectator, colonial imprisonment and competing nationalist revolutionary projects, constitute the complex differential power field of taṣwīr. How fitting for ṣura to be defined by Scheid as inherently incomplete.
The conference On Taṣwīr or the Inherently Incomplete invites scholars and artists to ponder over the ongoing possibilities of this concept in its practicable current permutations and potential future extensions as well as revisit its many shifting pasts.

Enumeration is an often neglected and yet significant device in Arabic literature and culture. The attentive reader finds enumerative devices at work in the lexical compilations in Adab works, the accumulating descriptions in travelogues, the lexicographical excess in the Maqāmāt, the catalogues of remembrance in trauma literature and the inventories of youth culture in postmodern literature to mention but a few examples (see Bray, “Lists and Memory”; Junge, “Enumeration in Arabic Prose”). Bringing separate and often disparate items together, enumeration offers an epistemic and aesthetic framework to (re-)interpret and (re-)experience these items (see Belknap, The List; Mainberger, Die Kunst der Aufzählung). In Arabic literature and culture, lists are often important devices to map the world and make sense of it.
This interdisciplinary conference seeks to bring together scholars from different disciplines, including literary and cultural studies, lexicography and historiography, in order to discuss the “art of enumeration” (Perec, Penser/Classer, 22) in Arabic literature and culture. It asks for the epistemic function of particular forms of enumeration, like the lexicographical compilations of Arabic synonyms, and links it to historical discourses of politics and society, knowledge and culture. It also explores the aesthetic function of enumerative devices like enumerative length, the order of lists, and enumerative sajʿ in literary and non-literary texts and connects it to poetics and pedagogy, writing practice and reading culture. Asking for epistemic discourses, aesthetic functions, and cultural practices of lists, the conference may also shed light on intercultural connections (e.g. with the Sumerian word lists), comparative perspectives (e.g. with the technique of enumeratio in Latin rhetoric) or practices of intermediality (e.g. enumerative devices in visual and performative arts).
In the last years, a growing academic interest in enumeration has prepared the ground for interdisciplinary approaches to enumeration in literature and culture focusing for instance on the performativity of enumeration (see Mainberger, Die Kunst der Aufzählung), enumerative infinity (see Eco, The Infinity of Lists), or the quotidian forms and techniques of lists (see Young, List Cultures). While these and many other recent studies draw mostly from Western literature and culture, this conference does not only want to extend the canon of enumeration, but also invites to explore the linguistic terminology, theoretical concepts and philosophical readings of enumeration in Arabic literature and culture.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- enumeration in Arabic literature (prose and poetry) and its epistemic and aesthetic function;
- enumerative practices in knowledge production including lexicography (e.g. thesauri, dictionaries) and historiography (e.g. isnād, genealogies);
- terminology, theories and readings of enumeration in Arabic literature and culture;
- enumeration in the arts, including visual and performative arts;
- intercultural and comparative perspectives on enumeration and their relevance for Arabic literature and culture;
The working languages of the conference are English and Arabic. Travel and accommodation expenses of invited participants will be fully covered by the Sheikh Zayed Chair for Arabic and Islamic Studies at the American University of Beirut. The organizers are planning to edit a peer reviewed collective volume.

تتحاور الأحلام مع البنى الثقافيّة والاجتماعيّة والدينيّة التي أنتجتها، فتتأثّر بها وتؤثّر فيها، وهي لذلك كفيلةٌ بتقديم معارف شتّى تتخطّى حدود الأفراد الحالِمين، لتكشف جوانب متعدّدة عن جماعاتهم أو مجتمعاتهم. ويمكن عن طريق الأحلام أن تتراءى للباحث تناقضاتٌ تاريخيّة أو انقسامات مذهبيّة أو فروقات جندريّة أو مظاهر من الحضارة المادّيّة. أمّا الوظيفة الأبرز للأحلام في التراث الأدبيّ العربيّ فهي منح الشرعيّة؛ إذ شكّلت أداةً فاعلةً في كتب التراجم تشهد للمترجَم له أو تشهد عليه. وللأحلام حضورٌ مستمرٌّ في الأدب الحديث، ووظائف مختلفة أوجدتها السياقات المستحدثة.
وُصفت الأحلام بأنّها لغةٌ عالميّة مشتركة، لأنّ بعض الأنماط المناميّة تتكرّر ذاتها في أكثر من حضارة مع تباين الحقبات التاريخيّة. وتحمل الأحلام المتكرّرة في الآداب العالميّة رواسب من اللغة التي انتقلت إليها، وتكييفاتٍ شتّى فرضها الوعاء الثقافيّ الجديد. والأدب العربيّ جزءٌ من هذا التلاقح الحضاريّ، فقد وفدت إليه أنماطٌ مناميّة شائعة من الحضارات المجاورة، ووردت في كتب التعبير العربيّة تأويلاتٌ يونانيّة وفارسيّة وهنديّة.
يدعو هذا العدد من مجلّة المركز الباحثين في مجال الدراسات العربيّة إلى مساءلة الأحلام في مختلف السياقات، ومحاورتها وإعادة تأويلها للكشف عن جوانب معرفيّة، من بينها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر:
- البنى الثقافيّة والاجتماعيّة والدينيّة التي استقت منها الأحلام مادّتها
- علاقة الأحلام بالتأريخ، والأدوار التي أدّتها في التأريخ للأحداث أو سير الأفراد
- وظائف الأحلام في الأنواع الأدبيّة بدءًا من تفاسير القرآن وكتب الحديث والتصوّف والتراجم والتاريخ، ووصولًا إلى كتب السرد والرحلات والرسائل الإخوانيّة والمقالات العلميّة
- علاقة الأحلام بالتداوي من الأمراض والعاهات، مثال قصيدة البردة للبوصيريّ (ت بين 694–696/1294–1297)
- استعمال الأحلام لمنح الشرعيّة أو حجبها عن أفرادٍ أو مذاهب أو سلالاتٍ حاكمة
- أهمّيّة التأويل وإعادة التأويل في تلقّي الأحلام
- موقع الأحلام من الحضارة المادّيّة بما فيها المظاهر العمرانيّة والمنتجات الصناعيّة
- تقاطع بعض الأنواع الأدبيّة مع الأحلام، مثال رسالة الغفران لأبي العلاء المعرّي (ت 449/1058)
- قراءة الأحلام في الأدب العربيّ – القديم والحديث – ضمن شبكةٍ من التلاقح الحضاريّ المستمرّ.

استكتاب لمجلّة المركز
تشكّل فكرة التحوّل واحدةً من الأفكار الأساسيّة في تطوّر الأدب وتجدّده، فالتحوّل بطبيعته نقيضٌ للثبات أو البقاء على الوضع الراهن. ومنذ أن كتب أوفيد (Ovidius) كتاب التحوّلات (Metamorphoses)، أخذت الفكرة تسري في الآداب والفنون معبّرةً عن لحظةٍ مليئة بالحركة. يتناول العدد الجديد من مجلّة المركز الأدب بصفته تحوُّلًا، وتتوزّع محاوره على مجالاتٍ شتّى، منها على سبيل الاقتراح:
- التحوّل في نظريّة الأدب التي شهدت انعطافاتٍ كثيرة، منها مثلًا الانتقال من الاهتمام بالسياق والمبدِع إلى الاكتفاء بالنصّ ومن بعده "موت المؤلّف"
- النصّ والترجمة: هجرة النصّ إلى غير لغته وتحوّلاته في سياقاتٍ اجتماعيّة وثقافيّة جديدة
- نشأة الأنواع الأدبيّة في منظور التحوّل، وكيفيّة إفادة الكاتب من موادّ متاحة لصناعة شكلٍ أدبيّ جديد
- تحوّلات النصّ الشعريّ العربيّ على مستوى المضمون (الغزل العذريّ/الشعر الصوفيّ، الطللية/رثاء المدن) وعلى مستوى البنية (الموشّح، قصيدة الشعر الحرّ، قصيدة النثر)
- رواية المسخ لكافكا (Kafka) وأثرها على التحوّلات في السرد العربيّ الحديث
- استلهام فكرة التحوّلات الأدبيّة في أعمال بعض الفنّانين والمسرحيّين
- التحوّل في تاريخ الكتاب العربيّ (المشافهة، البرديّات، الورق، الطباعة، الرقمنة).
سينقسم محور التحوّل إلى عددين: (1) يتناول العدد الأوّل التحوّلات على المستوى النظريّ: نظريّة الأدب ومناهج النقد الأدبي ونظريات الترجمة؛ (2) ينحو العدد الثاني منحًى تطبيقيًّا، فيناقش على مستويي البنية والمحتوى التحوّلات في الشعر والسرد وفي الفنون الأخرى.

الأمل في الأدبيّ العربيّ
الأمل موضوعةٌ (ثيمة) بارزة في آداب حضارات العالم، وهي تحضر بقوّةٍ في التراث العربيّ، شعره ونثره، وفي الأدب العربيّ الحديث. ومع ذلك، فإنّ عدد الدراسات التي تُعنى بهذه الموضوعة في الأدب العربيّ قليلٌ جدًّا. وهو حال الدراسات الخاصّة بالموضوعات المحدّدة في الأدب العربيّ عمومًا، بخلاف الآداب العالميّة الأخرى. وفي هذا العدد الخاصّ من مجلّة المركز، نرحّب بالمشاركات الخاصّة بموضوع الأمل في مختلف الأنواع الأدبيّة، المنثور منها والمنظوم، وفي أيّ حقبةٍ تاريخيّة عربيّة. وندعو الباحثين إلى معالجة هذا الموضوع في مجالاتٍ متنوّعة وبمقارباتٍ شتّى، في سبيل بناء إطارٍ لدراسة موضوعة الأمل، وغيرها من الموضوعات في المستقبل. آملين أن تشكّل مقالات هذا العدد مخزونًا للآمال والتطلّعات الخاصّة بعوالم التواصل بالعربيّة عبر العصور – شفهيًّا وكتابيًّا –، وأن تُظهر المزايا الخاصّة لهذا الجانب الإنسانيّ، والهواجس المشتركة بين البشريّة.
ومن بين الأسئلة البحثيّة المقترحة:
- هل هناك عصور للأمل في الثقافة العربيّة يمثّلها الإبداع بشقّيه النثريّ والشعريّ؟
- متى ارتفع منسوب الأمل في التراث الأدبيّ العربيّ ومتى انخفض؟ وما علاقة ذلك بالسياقات الثقافيّة والتاريخيّة والسياسيّة والدينيّة؟

International Academic Conference
“Ahatanhel Krymskyi and Lebanon”
In light of the worldwide effects of COVID-19 and due to logistical reasons, the Organizing Committee that represents the Embassy of Ukraine in the Lebanese Republic, the Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American University of Beirut (AUB), the Sheikh Zayed Chair for Arabic and Islamic Studies at AUB, and the A. Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, has decided to postpone the conference “Ahatanhel Krymskyi and Lebanon” which was initially set to take place on June 8-9, 2021 in an all-online format. The conference is postponed to November 11-12, 2021, and will be held as a hybrid event (both in-person and online), but depending on the circumstances we hope to welcome as many participants as possible at the American University of Beirut.
This conference aims to bring to light Ahatanhel Krymskyi’s works as a part of Lebanese history within the context of the Ottoman Empire and the Arab Nahda, and as a common page in Ukrainian-Lebanese relations. Therefore, we are particularly interested in papers that explore the following topics:
• Ahatanhel Krymskyi as a founder of the East-European academic school of Middle East Studies
• Krymskyi in Lebanon (1896–1898): sites, trips, social environment.
• “Beirut Stories” and “Palm tree branches” by A. Krymskyi
• Krymskyi as a researcher of Lebanese history, everyday life, and colloquial Arabic at the end of the XIX century
• Krymskyi’s contribution to the Middle East studies: Classical and Modern Arabic Literature, Islam and Sufism, History of Arabic Language, etc
• Krymskyi’s as a translator of the Arabic and Persian classical literature
Papers related to Krymskyi’s contribution to other fields of Middle Eastern Studies will be accepted too.
Working languages: Arabic, English, French.
Hosts of the Conference are planning to publish a collection of abstracts (Book of Abstracts) of the participants before the event. Since the conference is postponed, the deadline for abstract was extended: abstracts, with up to 400 words, double-spaced, must be sent along with your full name, complete affiliation, and position, and your CV by October 15, 2021, to oip00@mail.aub.edu. Please note that this is a call for additional papers; authors who have already sent their abstracts, do not need to resubmit them unless they wish to submit an edited abstract or an entirely new one. Authors will be notified of abstract acceptance or non-acceptance individually by email.

The summer school project “Arabische Philologien im Blickwechsel / نحو دراسات عربية برؤى متعددة ” has a
twofold agenda: to facilitate the systematic exchange of perspectives and experiences between
scholars based in the West and in the Arab world, and to foster the use of Arabic as an academic
language. Addressing young scholars (PhD students, postdocs) in the field of Arabic literary and
cultural studies based in Germany and other European countries and the Arab world, it provides them
the opportunity to present their own research in an international academic context, to discuss current,
innovative approaches to Arabic philology, literature and culture, and to practice the respective
foreign language (English or Arabic).
This year’s summer school seeks to bring together junior and senior scholars from universities in
Germany, Europe, and the Arab world working in the field of Arabic literary and cultural studies, both
classic and modern, in a wide sense (including arts, history, philosophy etc.) in order to discuss topics,
methodologies, and theories related to readers, readership and reading practices in Arabic literature,
arts, media and culture.
The reader is an essential key to understand Arabic literature, arts and culture in their historical
contexts, political discourses and societal functions. From the perspective of cultural studies, the
reader is far more than a passive recipient of a given cultural product but becomes a crucial coproducer
in the “circuit of culture” (Stuart Hall et al.). Moving away from the reader and focusing
instead on different readerships (or audiences) with their different sociocultural backgrounds is a way
to understand the different interpretations of a text or media (see e.g. John Fiske). In the field of
literary studies, the reader response criticism has developed models of the “implied reader”
(Wolfgang Iser) in the text and the “horizon of expectations” (Hans-Robert Jauss) of real readers or
“interpretative communities” (Stanley Fish). In recent times, moreover, approaches of cognitive
poetics seek to analyze cognitive-psychological frames and scripts that guide the process of reading
(e.g. Peter Stockwell, Reuven Tsur).
Despite the importance of the reader, literary and cultural approaches in the field of Arabic Studies
for a long time seem to have paid little attention to readers and readerships as well as reading
practices and communities. One challenge is the seeming lack of sources, the other is the absence of
concrete methods that may help to unveil the reader and to frame their role theoretically in the circuit
of cultural production. In recent years, however, Arabic and Islamic Studies have made several new
attempts to approach the reader. This includes the study of individual and collective reading practices
(e.g. Konrad Hirschler, Ami Ayalon), the circulation of the written word (e.g. Shawkat Toorawa),
libraries and networks of readers (e.g. Boris Liebrenz), the reception of particular authors or genres
(e.g. Marwa Elshakry, Andrea Haist), popular literature and culture (e.g. Richard Jacquemond) as well
as empirical studies on Arab readerships (e.g. “What do Arabs read”). Against this background, adab,
for instance, can be studied with regard to the way they address their patrons and rulers (e.g. Suzanne
Stetkevych), but also the ways they seek a wider audience (e.g. Samer Ali, Muhsin al-Musawi).
Moreover, the Arabic periodical press is being revisited as an important site for author-reader
interaction, various reading practices and for building up a community of readers (e.g. Elizabeth Holt,
Barbara Winckler), and the internet has facilitated new forms of interactive readership, where the
ordinary reader may easily become a digital critic (e.g. Teresa Pepe and Sameh Fayiz).
The summer school “In Search of the Reader” seeks to bring together different methodological and
theoretical approaches to the reader in Arabic literature, arts, media and culture. It welcomes research
projects on practices, functions and histories of reading with regard to various texts and media,
including images, music and film. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- authors, copyists, publishers, critics, scholars etc. as readers;
- historical and sociocultural practices and functions of reading (including listening and
watching);
- textual (or medial) conceptualizations of the reader, reading and readerships;
- empirical approaches to readers, reading communities and reading practices;
- reading practices according to different genres and media;
- textual (or medial) reader guidance and its aesthetic and epistemic functions;
- theories of the reader and reading in philosophy, literary and cultural studies, media and art
studies etc.
In the framework of the summer school, each junior scholar will have the opportunity to present and
discuss his/her research project. In view of the digital format of the summer school, they are asked to
prepare, in advance, a video presentation of his/her research project, which will be distributed to all
the participants and discussed intensively in small working groups during the summer school.
Professional academic language trainers will offer individual coaching in order to enable the
participants to improve their presentation. In addition, all participants will discuss in plenary sessions
theoretical approaches based on selected Arabic and English texts that will be provided by the
organizers beforehand.
The schedule of the summer school consists of a preparatory meeting (29 May), two individual
coaching sessions (mid-June and mid-July) and the main summer school (16-20 August). All sessions
are mandatory. Participants will be requested to prepare a short video presentation of (parts of) their
current research project (30 min.) in English or Arabic; they are expected to use the language they are
less familiar with in their academic practice. They will have two individual coaching sessions with an
academic language trainer as well as technical support in order to improve their presentation. In
addition, they are supposed to prepare the English and Arabic texts distributed beforehand (ca. 60
pages in total) and participate actively in plenary discussions. Good knowledge of Arabic and English
is required.
Please submit, in English or Arabic, an abstract of your research project (3−5 pages, including a
passage related to the summer school’s thematic focus, i.e. readers and reading practices), a short
letter of motivation, a short CV, and the names of two academic references (one single pdf file) to

The summer school is organized by AGYA members Christian Junge (Philipps-Universität Marburg)
and Enass Khansa (American University of Beirut) and AGYA alumni Barbara Winckler (Westfälische
Wilhelms-Universität Münster) and Bilal Orfali (American University of Beirut). It is part of the
research projects of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA). Funding
is still subject to final approval.
Every text or, to be more precise, every reading of a text, has a beginning and an end. While one could call into question this linear perception in times of textual linkage and seemingly never-ending writing and reading processes, the end is a hermeneutic category that affects our processes of understanding.
The beginning of books and texts, prefaces and introductions in particular, has been a research interest for some time. The end, on the other hand, is still a quite unknown territory in Arabic studies although authors apparently took great care in shaping the final passage of their works. At the same time, the end of any text is the starting point of a hermeneutic process with many open questions. It is the last chance to silence potential criticism, to guide the reader, to create a certain image of the author, to suggest possible readings. The end can be testament, justification, and instruction; it can provide guidance, perspective and closure; it can give assurance and sow the seeds of doubt; it can bring conclusion and hold a promise for further readings.
This conference aims at discussing literary phenomena with regard to endings, finality, and closure from different perspectives, starting with the question where the end of a given text even begins.

Mysteries and Alghāz

The burgeoning interest in the contemporary Arabic detective novel (See Arablit.org, “the Mysterious Rise and Fall of Arabic Crime Novels”), highlights the methodological challenges attendant to its study. Critical studies of Arabic detective novels seem particularly susceptible to reproducing a temporality of not-yet; whereby the genre is ostensibly struggling to take root in the Arab world. The latter view is sometimes read as symptomatic of, and representing, the not-yet modernity of Arab societies or states. Interestingly, authors of detective novels similarly project themselves as cut-off from any precursors, as if every novel is the first detective novel.
Yet, detective novels have enjoyed tremendous popularity in the Arab world from the early translations of Sherlock Holmes, Arsène Lupin, and Rocambole (Samah Selim, “Fiction and Colonial Identities: Arsène Lupin in Arabic”) all the way to writings by Yasmina Khadra (Inspector Llob), Mahmoud Salim (AL-Mughāmrūn al-Khamsa), and the Akashic Noir series. The rift between the continuous popularity of the genre on the one hand, and the critical discourse of crisis on the other throws into sharp relief the conflation between literary history, and a culturalist search for ‘organic’ origins. The weakest link, in this conflation, are the pre-modern detective-like narratives, mysteries, and all potential so-called ‘local’ proto or precursors to the modern detective narrative. Put differently, even the few studies that have attempted to side-step the aforementioned critical discourse of crisis are yet to work through what it means to think about these pre-19thcentury narratives (that are often referred to as ‘local’ narrative forms). In this workshop, we ask what it means to think simultaneously about this body of texts without resorting to a narrative of origins? As such, we invite scholars to temporarily suspend genre-specific approaches with its intertwinement to a question of origins and to rather think along and push further the following themes (we welcome contributions from scholars working on different periods of literary production):
• How have detective narratives (broadly conceived) contributed to the negotiation of the boundary between the Juridical and the literary? What is the distinction between the procedures and performance of juridical and literary revelation of truth? The latter is of import for the conception of adab itself, and for the affective deployment of language.
• What role do these narratives play in negotiating the distinction between the public/private? We are especially interested in how this divide creates a sense of the city and a way of seeing it.
• How does the interplay between the juridical/literary, public/private, language and the city enable thinking anew the changing connections between adab and subjectivity?
• Law, Literature, & the State.
• Mysteries, the messianic, and the political (we are particularly interested in how this connection pans out in the ancestral histories of ruling classes such as the Mamluks or disappearances of figures of power).
• How can these questions offer a prism that may be extended to some Qur’anic/Biblical episodes and their interpretations? What are the implications of such an extension for adab.
The proceedings of the workshop will be edited by Maha Abdelmegeed and Bilal Orfali. Digital media, however, is not the first ‘new media’ to appear in the Arab world. The adoption of Internet technologies in recent times could be compared to the transition from oral to script culture that took place in the 9th century, the spread of print technologies after several centuries of a flourishing manuscript culture in the 19th century, or the emergence of audio-visual media (radio, TV, photograpy, film) in the 20th century. The transhistorical perspective has proven useful in the field of media studies in general, but requires further exploration with specifics to the Arab region.
With regard to different media at different historical moments (9th-21st century), the conference aims at exploring how the emergence and diffusion of ‘new media’ or communication technologies in Arab societies have affected the (conditions of) literary and cultural production, distribution, and reception and how cultural debates are shaped by the use of different media.

Speakers will be requested to give a 15 minutes paper presentation, followed by a 15 minutes discussion. Travel and accommodation expenses of invited speakers will be fully covered by AGYA.
