Mookesh Patel is an associate professor of visual communication design in The Design School at Arizona State University. Patel received his M.F.A. in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design. He holds a diploma in visual communication from the National Institute of Design, India. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Research Scholar Grant, a United Nations Development Program Grant and has received awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, among others.

With green building standards increasingly embedded in residential construction, the need to asse... more With green building standards increasingly embedded in residential construction, the need to assess their impact on indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and human health becomes more critical “to ensure that green housing and healthy housing are in fact synonymous” (USDHUD, 2009, p. 8). There is little research to date that has systematically examined this, and none has focused on low-income seniors. Bilder entwickeln eine dauerhafte Macht: Sie sind mächtig genug um wirkliche Menschen in den Köpf... more Bilder entwickeln eine dauerhafte Macht: Sie sind mächtig genug um wirkliche Menschen in den Köpfen der Betrachter zu schemenhaften, konturenlosen Figuren werden zu lassen. Obwohl sich viele Forscher mit den stereotypisierenden Darstellungen von Arabern in den Medien beschäftigt haben und diverse Vorschläge zur Reduktion der Auswirkungen der schädlichen und abträglichen Bilder gemacht wurden, haben nur wenige Studien die Wirksamkeit der vorgeschlagenen Lösungswege überprüft. Die von uns durchgeführte Umfrage wendet die Vorschläge an und überprüft sie durch ein visuelles Projekt. In der Studie erhielten die Teilnehmer visuelle Umfragen zur Betrachtung, Verinnerlichung und Kommentierung über einen Feedback-Mechanismus. Jede experimentelle Umfrage enthielt eine "vorher" Phase, in der den Teilnehmern ohne jegliche Zusatzinformation das Bild eines Individuums gezeigt wurde, und eine "nachher" Phase, in der Hintergrundinformation zur Verfügung gestellt wurde. Die Umfragen wurden mit Studenten des ersten Studienabschnittes an der Arizona State University durchgeführt. Die Antworten lassen vermuten, dass das betrachtete Publikum empfänglich ist für stereotypisierende Botschaften in den Massenmedien und dass der Austausch von vereinfachenden Bildern durch aussagekräftige die Wahrnehmung der Araber tendenziell hebt.

Since data collection is ongoing, no statistical findings are presented. Lessons learned to date regarding the intervention and methodological process are discussed.

To address the issue of effective and sustainable design, against decorative or entertaining desi... more To address the issue of effective and sustainable design, against decorative or entertaining design, the Department of Visual Communication Design at College of Design, Arizona State University, conducted an experiment. For the last two years, the GRA 362 Visual Communication 4 and GRA 322 Technologies in Design 2 faculty focused on team collaboration based on Daniel Goleman's theory of Emotional Intelligence to resolve design problems. The objective was to observe the relevance and effectiveness of deliverables (the design products) and its relationship to collaborative project management and tools. This paper presents a case study to determine if Emotional Intelligence is an effective model to manage team collaboration within a design studio environment that delivers effective visual design solutions.
