• Site worked smoothly before the upgrade to WP 5.6

Now, when logged in to WP and trying to edit the site, if I click on anything in the top toolbar (Customize, New+, edit this page, etc) I get a black screen with an X in the top right corner. Also, when the logo is clicked to return to the home page, I get the same black screen. On some of my pages, block sections are missing on the desktop site.

Please note I am not a developer…just a simple editor. Simple instructions greatly appreciated!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • @oglekler Hi Olga, thank you so much for taking the time and responding – and for all your links. Unfortunately, I don’t think the links would adress my problem.

And yes, that’s exactly my problem: I can’t do ANYTHING on the backend-admin-page. Even though I can see the menu bar with the ‘Dashboard’ button there – but it’s not working at all. Except for the menu bar the whole backend is blank/white. And whatever button I try to click on, nothing happens at all (so, the ‘Dashboard’ button is also not working). So, everything is just dead despite showing the menu bar. Therefore, I also can’t see/find any content to work on. The only thing that I can do is to go from the backend to the frontend. That’s why I tried the ‘Customize’ option. But as soon as I click on that one, everything is just blank/completely white, not even a menu bar is showing.

Also, the theme recommended the – I assume – theme update to version 5.6 as a whole?
That’s what I tried to do after the dummy-background/logo emerged: clicked on: update to 5.6. I’m not sure whether they meant the theme, or WordPress altogether. The only thing I know it was not about some single plugin.

Tried to include a screenshot here, but doesn’t seem to be an option.

On the weekend I updated my son’s dancing website to WP 5.6… Immediate blank screen issue. Every page came up white. If I cleaned the pages cache it still came up white. If I then refreshed it, the normal page showed. This kept happening to each and every page I tried to open.
This week I updated my own website to WordPress 5.6. The exact same thing happened. I restored to the old WordPress version, and everything is working fine again.

So I don’t understand all the work-arounds looking for problems in the plugins or whatever. This is clearly an WP 5.6 update issue.

I therefore would not recommend any update to 5.6 until this problem has been sorted out by the WP 5.6 developers. I certainly won’t update the other 20-or-so websites that I manage.

I won’t be installing the 5.6 upgrade after reading these reports of problems people are having after upgrading.

As usual, as soon as a WordPress upgrade occurs, it buggers up your website and you have to spend hours getting things to work again. Really, WordPress should be able to do better than this.

So sorry for all who having trouble. I’m still using jQuery Migrate after all my photos were turned on their sides from the last WordPress upgrade.

The insertBlock() Gutenberg JS function does not seem to be working as it did in WordPress version 5.5.3. On version 5.6.x, innerBlocks[] does not always reflect the insertion of the new block. Did anything change that would impact the results if the insertBlock function. Tried using wp.data.dispatch( 'core/block-editor' ).insertBlocks instead, but it had the same problem.
