Cannot change font color for individual words since 5.9

I often change the colour of individual words. Normally I select a colour, and copy the hex code, and paste it in so I can use the same colour on another piece of text. All that is fine until I go to paste in the hex code. It just glitches and defaults to black #000000
If I try typing the number in my hand it just glitches and won’t let me type.
I had this same problem recently, and was advised to remove Gutenberg plugin, and this worked. Then got 5.9 update and it’s happened again. I don’t have Gutenberg installed.
The only obvious difference is instead of having ‘font color’ as an option on the dropdown, its now ‘highlight’.
Any ideas? This is a big problem for me as being able to highlight words is essential for my posts.
