Five Reasons to Get LOTO Right, Five Mistakes Employers Make That Result in Citations & How to Audit Your LOTO Program

OSHA’S Lockout/Tagout (Hazardous Energy Control) Standard is always one of OSHA’s most frequently cited standards in general industry but particularly for manufacturers. It is also one of OSHA’s most misunderstood and misapplied standards. While many LOTO inspections result from amputations reported to OSHA, Illinois manufacturers may also receive a visit from OSHA as part of the agency’s “Hazardous Machinery (Amputations) National Emphasis Program”. Given the fact that LOTO violations are considered “high emphasis hazards” that qualify employers into the Severe Violator Enforcement Program, it is critical for employers to get Lockout/Tagout right.

Kovalan is a credentialed outreach instructor for the Construction Safety Council of Chicago and authorized outreach instructor for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and is certified to teach OSHA 10 and 30 hour courses.
